Flavour of the Month is once again just around the corner. I’m pretty excited about this one, because Vaasa boys Graceskull and The Soft Rabbit are hitting the stage along with local roots guru Marty The Random Guy. It will be a great evening. Make sure you visit those links below, if you don’t know these guys. They are all wonderful. Here’s the information in …

Two videos for today. First we have a country singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose from Nashville, Tennessee. The song is called Own Side and it’s from her debut album. I must admit that I don’t really know Caitlin very well. I heard a couple of songs from her earlier EP sometime last year and since that she’s been on my list of artists/bands that I need to …

Back to Philly. Summer Fiction is a Philadelphia-based pop group led by Bill Ricchini. Their previous music video Chandeliers also featured in this video of the day section. I loved that song, but never properly checked out the full album. I really need to do that now, because this seem to be totally my kind of stuff. Throw Your Arms Around Me is another wonderful …

Mirel Wagner: Mirel Wagner (Kioski Rec, 2011)
Mirel Wagner proves that pitch black can shine brightly. This young singer-songwriter has created something that you rarely or never hear on these shores. On the river banks of Mississippi in the late-twenties it might have been common, but not so much hundred years later in Finland. Maybe the greatest songwriter ever Townes Van Zandt once said that there …

Jarkko Martikainen has recently recorded a cover version of Austin Lucas’ Bells with Finnish lyrics. Kellot was recorded last september with the help of Samae Koskinen and it’s a very good version of the song. I do prefer the original, but also Jarkko nails this one pretty damn well and adds his own vision and style to the song. You can listen to the song …

Phil Wilson: God Bless Jim Kennedy (Yesboyicecream / Slumberland, 2010)
Phil Wilson was the frontman of the somewhat legendary mid-eighties indie pop group The June Brides and now, over 20 years later, Phil returns to this ball game and shows that he can still handle the art of writing really good pop music. That’s also a small relief, because every now and then one has to …

Jonny: Jonny (Turnstile Records, 2011)
Euros Childs and Norman Blake working together sounds like a match made in harmonic pop heaven. Their collaborative project Jonny has an album out on Turnstile Records and it’s a really lovely pop album. These guys are such a fantastic pop tunesmiths that they could write good pop songs without even trying too hard. Maybe some of these songs even feel …

Lately I’ve been introducing myself to Canadian lo-fi indie rocker Shotgun Jimmie. It started with this goofy video One Trick Pony a week or two ago. First I thought it was a little too goofy, but soon I gave in and admitted that I loved it. Then it was time to check out other stuff and after listening to his songs on spotify and youtube, …

Something little different this time around. I can’t say I have listened to a lot of music played with kora. Well to be honest, I didn’t even know what that instrument was beforehand. However, it certainly sounds like you can make some pretty magical things with it, if you know what you are doing. French Yann Tambour aka Stranded Horse seem to know what he …
