Baby Sweetcorn: Small Hour Drama 7" (Karkia Mistika, 2002)

Finally bought this vinyl single and it was certainly worth it. I become interested about Baby Sweetcorn last summer when I heard some excellent songs from their previous effort, a cd ep called 'Rosary Princible'. It was already then quite clear that Mikko Grönlund is able to create engaging music. Now on 'Small Hour Drama' Baby Sweetcorn continues on the same path. Making fragile, beautiful music. There's just something undeniable charming in this seven inch single. Even just looking at that cover art gave me the feeling that this was a record which I was going to like. And the first impression was again the right one. Both songs (Small Hour Drama and Heart Of Gold) on this single are really good. The mood is quite tender and longing, but the songs are still really melodic and uplifting. The arrangements are quite inventive. Especially that trumpet gives a nice little touch to the record. Mikko's vocals sound vulnerable but very warm. This is just the kind of music that I love to hear. It's the kind of music that doesn't really work if its just playing somewhere in the background, but when you really start listen to it, you'll realise its true value.
