CARMEN & THE DEVIL

Carmen & The Devil recently played a couple of shows with the excellent Damien Jurado and released a second cassette. A few copies might still be left at the best record store in the country (8raita), but if you are not able to get the cassette or have a hard time trying to figure out how you can attach that thing to the usb or dvd drive of your laptop, you can nowadays listen to some of their excellent songs on their soundcloud page. Here are the Carmen & The Devil originals Love Drove My Baby Away and St. John. Visit their soundcloud to hear their country & folk cover songs.

22-PISTEPIRKKO

I haven’t written much about 22-Pistepirkko to onechord.net even though it’s one of the finest bands in Finland. Why? Well because I’ve always felt that my tiny website can’t really give anything to the already well-known bands and therefore I’ve focused on the smaller groups that (at least in my dreamland) might somehow benefit from my amateurish writings. Nevertheless. It would be stupid not to write this. The new 22-Pistepirkko album Lime Green Delorean came out last week and the songs I’ve heard so far sound absolutely amazing. This could be one of their finest albums and considering their brilliant back catalogue, that’s a lot said. Time to visit the record store next week. Here’s Ufo Girl from the new album.

Carmen & The Devil – Amazing male-female country duets

Carmen & The Devil are exploring the american country & folk tradition, playing old (but never out of) fashion male-female duets, singing their hearts out.. and they are doing it all exceptionally well. They first started out playing Gillian Welch’s songs, but have since expanded their repertoire and nowadays you can also hear them cover other artists from Hank Williams to Holly Golightly. Last friday at Flavour Of The Month club, they also gave the world premiere to the first Carmen & The Devil original Love Drove My Baby Away. A song has to be pretty damn good, if it doesn’t feel any weaker than the Gillian Welch songs they were playing and this one didn’t. I will be ecstatic if they one day have a full EP/album of their own material. Oh, to tell you the truth, I’m already ecstatic, because The first Carmen & The Devil release Live by the Kitchen Table is out and available as a limited edition c-cassette! It contains Love Drove My Baby Away and some great covers. Demand is apparently high and Fredde’s cassette factory is running on overcapacity, but if you are interested in one, you better visit the best record store in Turku/Finland/World, 8raita Record Store.

Listen to the amazing Carmen & The Devil original Love Drove My Baby Away and their rendition of Rattlin’ Bones (song by Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson) below. Both are from the Live by the Kitchen Table cassette.

February’s Flavour Of The Month takes place on 4th of february at Pikku-Torre, Turku. Lady Escape and Carmen & The Devil will share the stage. See you there.

Flavour Of The Month-klubin helmikuun esiintyjiksi ovat lupautuneet helsinkiläinen Lady Escape sekä paikallinen Carmen & The Devil.

Lady Escapen musiikissa kohtaavat kitaraindien vinksahtaneemman laidan eri alalajit ja vuosikymmenet. Agent Kooper-yhtyeen Robin Pahlmanin uusi akustinen duoprojekti Carmen & The Devil puolestaan möyhii amerikkalaisen populaarimusiikin syvimpiä juuristoja, kuten on todettavissa YouTubesta löytyvistä Hank Williams– ja Gillian Welch-tulkinnoista.
