OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #99

Another week, another new music weekly.

I changed the title a little bit to in order to make it seem like this is more than just another silly Spotify playlist with zero relevance. Yeah, I do know that it really isn’t. Anyway, I just thought I try to be better at mentioning the releases that are not available on streaming platforms (for obvious reasons). So just trying to make a bit more thorough weekly new release round up, but I will definitely still miss a ton of great releases and the playlist is still the main thing. Next week this hits episode 100, which is sort of crazy. That was the goal I had in mind, but I don’t have immediately plans to stop and will continue as long as I enjoy making it and someone is actually listening.

This one was maybe a bit slower release week, but the quality more than made up for it. There’s a wonderful new album from Jenny O., posthumous album from one of the all-time greats Jason Molina and three new gorgeous Ian Daniel Kehoe albums over at Bandcamp. Oh and there’s also new The Microphones and new Will Johnson albums at Bandcamp too, which is a big deal. And many other beautiful things. Here’s a list of new albums and EPs that were on my radar.

Jenny O. – New Truth (Mama Bird Recording Co)
Gold Star Gold Star – Introducing..(Earth Libraries)
Smug Brothers – Flame Verbatim EP (Mel-Tones)
Jason Molina – Eight Gates (Secretly Canadian)
Sam Rae – Ten Thousand Years
Golden Shoals – Golden Shoals
Young Gun Silver Fox – Canyons (Karma Chief Records / Candelion) – US release this week
Casper Allen – Vol. 1 (Trillbilly Deluxe)
Daniel Donato – A Young Man’s Country (Cosmic Country Music)
Scott Hildebrand – Under Wraps EP
Billy Nomates – Billy Nomates (Invada Records)
Double Grave – Goodbye, Nowhere! (Forged Artifacts)
Isobel Campbell – Voices in the Sky EP (Cooking Vinyl)
Mary Chapin Carpenter – The Dirt and the Stars (Lambent Light Records)

-Plus a few new albums that are not on streaming platforms, but can be found from Bandcamp.

Ian Daniel Kehoe – Rock & Roll Illusion / Charging the Stone / Disco Body Buzz (Tin Angel Records)
Will Johnson – El Capitan (Keeled Scales)
The Microphones – Microphones in 2020 (P.W. Elverum & Sun)
Aaron Lee Tasjan – Found Songs Vol. 2 EP
Andrew Bryant – Ain’t It Like The Cosmos (Demos)

The Finnish section only has two songs this week. New singles from Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus and Väisänen.

As for international singles there’s plenty to love. You can take a journey with Skyway Man or enjoy the first single from Bright Arcana (who gets some help from Anna Tivel). Jeremy Squires, BAJA and Kathleen Edwards continue to impress. Night Shop single has been a big favorite for me. It’s been out a while, but I only found it this week. As usual, everything else would be worth a namedrop on this text too, but you’ll find them below.

That’s it for this week. Sorry that everything else on this blog is pretty much on hold and sorry for being so horrible at answering emails. I’ve been struggling for about five months and just haven’t had the energy to do much more than this weekly round up. Maybe things get better one day, but I’m not 100% sure anymore. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.
