OCTA 18th Anniversary – Katie Spencer

Even though this is partly a celebration of the long road of this blog, I wanted to invite my recent favorites too. One of my favorite 2019 albums has been Weather Beaten from Katie Spencer. She is an excellent folk songwriter and guitarist from Kingston upon Hull, UK and her beautiful and timeless songs live somewhere close to the Bert Jansch and John Martyn territories. Katie Spencer’s magnificent festival song is called Shannon Road. Her voice and guitar playing are so mesmerizing that it took me even a moment to notice that the video also features a really lovely cat. What a great performance from them both. If you want to investigate further, you can hear/buy her 2019 album Weather Beaten on her Bandcamp page.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – verões

The music of verões aka Helsinki-based musician Petri Nakari is a perfect fit to this festival, because he is making wonderful cover versions of Finnish indie songs from the early 00s. The originals were a big part of the early days of this music blog and I love listening to his beautifully reimagined versions of these songs that are blissfully stuck in my heart. The festival number for verões is called Fire On the Streets. It was written by ultrasport and their original appeared on their 2005 album Nothing Can Go Wrong. The studio version of this cover by verões can be found from the new self-titled album that is available on Bandcamp.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – Drew Beskin

Next we travel to Athens, GA to hear a great performance from Drew Beskin and Henry Beskin (I hope I catched Henry’s name correctly). This is Henry’s first appearance on this blog, but Drew Beskin is a long time favourite and has been here several times both solo and with his wonderful bands The District Attorneys, PURSES and Party Dolls. Drew’s festival song Suspicion from the Start is the single from his 2018 solo album Nostalgia Porn. The studio version of this song and the whole gorgeous album can be found from his Bandcamp. There’s also a music video for the song. Take it away Drew and Henry.
