Joseph Huber, Ryley Walker, The Olympic Symphonium

I’ve followed Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter Joseph Huber since the last The .357 String Band album. His magnificent song The Days Engrave was the highlight of that album. I never got totally into his solo debut, but I really enjoyed his second solo album Tongues Of Fire back in 2012. Joseph Huber just released his third solo album. The new album is called The Hanging Road and I’ve had this excellent album on heavy rotation for the past few weeks. This is Coming Down From You from The Hanging Road.

Ryley Walker is a really convincing new folk singer-songwriter from Chicago, IL. This might not be the kind of music that I usually listen to all day long, but Ryley’s new album All Kinds Of You is still extremely impressive. People often compare him to Bert Jansch and Tim Buckley and I can fully understand that. This is Great River Road from his new album All Kinds Of You that came out on Tompkins Square in April 2014.

Canadian folk group The Olympic Symphonium and their latest album Chance To Fate was on heavy rotation a couple of months ago, but I wasn’t really writing the blog at the time. So better late than never and all the other cliches. This beautiful folk album came out on Forward Music Group back in March. This is one of my favourites. A song called Jasper.

Marine Dreams – Lemon Tree

One of my favourite Canadian labels You’ve Changed Records (home of Daniel Romano, Marine Dreams, The Weather Station, Shotgun Jimmie, Baby Eagle..) announced last week that a new Marine Dreams album Lemon Tree will hit our hearts on the 22nd of May. This is big news for me, because I absolute loved the previous album Corner Of The Eye. I spent hours and hours listening to it and Marine Dreams ended up on my top 10 for the year 2013 in both the best albums and the best songs category. This Ian Kehoe guy is just so damn good at this thing called music. I can’t wait to hear the new album Lemon Tree in a few days. This is the first outtake from the forthcoming album Constant Love. Another future classic for sure.

The Lieblings, David Myhr, The JAC

Hey it’s finally hot out there. So we need a summer single. Finnish pop group The Lieblings can take care of this small matter. Swedish master of melodic pop music David Myhr released a wonderful solo album Soundshine back in 2012. His new release Record Collection EP came out on few weeks ago on Lojinx. This is a digital only EP. You can get it from his label Lojinx (or iTunes). There’s also a lyric video for the excellent title track. I’m sure this will make most pop geeks (like yours truly) smile. The JAC is back with a new single called Love Dumb. This thing came out in March 2014, but yeah. I’m kind of slow these days. The JAC is a project led by Australian pop superhero Joe “Big in Finland” Algeri. The debut album was a solo effort, but nowadays The JAC seems to be a band. This is Love Dumb from the forthcoming second The JAC album.

The Pearlfishers, Randolph’s Leap, Lenzie Moss

Still playing the catch up game. This time I’m looking at Scotland. I’ve had a soft spot for Scottish pop music ever since I heard Grand Prix for the first time. Here are some fairly new Scottish pop treasures.

The legendary or at least should-be legendary The Pearlfishers return to this ball game with a new album Open Up Your Colouring Book. It is so great to hear David Scott and co making wonderful pop music once again. David hasn’t lost his magic touch and this seems to be as magnificent as those late 90’s pop classics like The Strange Underworld of the Tall Poppies & The Young Picnickers. This is To The Northland from the new album Open Up Your Colouring Book that came out on Marina Records in april 2014.

Another Scottish pop guru Lenzie Moss (also known as Finlay Macdonald) released a new single Let’s Take the Day Off on the last day of march 2014 (yeah, I’m slow at posting these). Hopefully we’ll get a new full-length as well, because that debut album was really good. This is the new single Let’s Take the Day Off (and below you’ll find a Son Of Unicorn from the debut album. I had to include it, because I love that chorus).

Moving on to the younger generation. I’ve been following Randolph’s Leap from the start. My pop mentor Duglas T. Stewart probably pointed me towards their direction a couple of years ago. Their new album Clumsy Knot came out on Lost Map in April 2014. I haven’t added a copy to my record collection yet, but I really should. I mean listen to this Foolishness Of Youth for example. Just adorable and irresistible.
