John Moreland – In The Throes

moreland

I don’t really writer proper reviews anymore, but if I did, this one would get all five hearts. Singer-songwriter John Moreland from Oklahoma has created something rather special. In The Throes is just one hell of an album. This is songwriting of the highest order and a contender for the album of the year award. Springsteen comes to mind occasionally, but it’s not disturbing at all. This is no third grade singer-songwriter trying to copy everything he can from the masters. John Moreland is a true talent and with this album he claims a place among the finest current americana/country singer-songwriters. This whole thing is just so damn brilliant that I’m struggling to decide which song to feature here. Let’s go with Break My Heart Sweetly this time, but you really need to hear the whole amazing album. In The Throes was released by Last Chance Records on 11th of june.

I had to add Oh Julia as well:

Wes Tirey – I Stood Among Trees

westirey

This has been on my playlist for some weeks and deserves a lot of love. Wes Tirey is a great folk singer-songwriter and I Stood Among Trees is a marvellous little record. Kind of bare, but still very powerful and it really demands your attention right from the start and doesn’t let go before the last note. A really talented songwriter and storyteller. You can hear the whole striking EP on his bandcamp. You’ll find the opener The Evening Tide below. I also highly recommend these amazing videos, The Time Leaves So Soon and Master Master.

Pienet ongelmat – Lyhytsoitto I

pienetongelmat

It looks like I need to stop waiting for that Puskii! album, because that release might never see the light of the day. Thankfully Sami has a new band called Pienet ongelmat and I’m thoroughly enjoying this one as well. First release, Lyhytsoitto I, is now available on their soundcloud and you can download it for free. This is the opener, Sataman tytöt.

Video of the Day #122: Ochre Room – Don’t Try

ochreroomi

One Chord to Another gained some unexpected recognition today. It was selected as the #1 Finnish music blog by Cision. Which was nice, even though it might not be fully deserved. Lately the update frequency has not been on the level it should be and there are plenty of Finnish bloggers that do a great job in covering Finnish music and are better writers than I am. Anyway, there seems to be a small burst of new visitors, so this is a rather good opportunity to recommend one of my favourite Finnish bands, Ochre Room. This Tampere-based folk rock / americana group released a marvellous debut album Evening Coming In last year. The follow-up is currently in the making, but it’s still way too early to set a camp outside your favourite record store. However, the band just released a new music video for the song Don’t Try. It’s an excellent outtake from their debut album and the music video was directed by Jeroen Sebrechts.
