OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #123

Another week, another new music weekly.

Still somewhat quiet on the release front. Or maybe not, because I could easily come up with close to 50 songs. There’s always plenty to love.

This week we got new albums from Reed Turchi (two albums), Katy Kirby, Valley Maker, The Hold Steady, John Paul Keith, Ian Fisher, Cassandra Jenkins, Spencer Burton, Lael Neale, Ryan Dugre, Adeline Hotel, Senora May, John Blek, Corvair, Wild Pink and Tindersticks. Plus an EP from Hand Habits. The album by Steven van Betten and Andrew Rowan came out a week or two ago, but I only found it this week.

The Finnish part this week has a new the new album from Jani Matti Juhani (more excellent Elvis covers in Finnish) and single from Pekka Laine.

And finally the international singles. Amythyst Kiah released a new version of Black Myself. Still extremely powerful. Other big things were new singles from Johanna Samuels, Janet Simpson, Esther Rose, Karima Walker, Nick Shoulders (this was last week, but somehow missed it), Kaitlin Butts, Kassi Valazza, Corinne Sharlet and Joe Kaplow. Just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. My apologies that I’ve only done this one weekly post during the pandemic era. The reason has been sort of a combination of the pandemic, personal health struggles, overall laziness and spending too much of my spare time watching hockey games and art house movies. I’ll try to get back to the other kind of posts too at some point, but tough to say when exactly. Anyway, it was nice to learn that someone actually misses that stuff. It does give some motivation to continue, because my self-doubt ridden mind often wonders if I’m just throwing songs and words into a void. I probably should also try to figure out if I want to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of this blog, because September comes surprisingly fast. Anyway, enough of this pointless chat. Here is the playlist for the week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #122

Another week, another new music weekly.

This seemed like a surprisingly slow release week or I managed to miss a lot of good stuff. Could go either way. The big ones for me this week were the new album from Steady Holiday and new EP from Tiffany Williams. We also got excellent new releases from Avi Vinocur, Wolf van Elfmand, Mac Leaphart, Beth Lee, The Craig Torso Show and Rue Snider (live EP). Because it was a bit slow week, I revisited bunch of great albums from last week’s monster list.

The Finnish section is also super short with just the singles from Tams and Jonas and I. There had to be more.

And last but not least the international singles. There’s a new one from Melissa Carper and just like the first, it’s absolutely wonderful. I can’t wait to hear the album, because I really love these advance singles. Elephant Micah announced a new album and released a single. That is always a big deal. The new Dan Edmonds single is also pure gold. Hand Habits and Little Mazarn dropped some cover magic. Then there’s some pop treats later on like singles from The Legal Matters, Why Dogs Why and Radio Days. And that’s just to name a few.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #121

Another week, another new music weekly.

My heart was not in this last week, so this weekly tries to tackle the new releases from the past two weeks. Therefore it’s a bit longer than normally. I’ll get back to the usual weekly routine after this one.

The Weather Station, Pony Bradshaw, Aaron Lee Tasjan and Lucero were my most anticipated album releases, but the ones I actually listened the most were the surprise albums from Isaac Vallentin and Austin James Craig. There’s still something about that catching one off guard thing. The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness, Sun June, Quinn Pilgrim, Tele Novella, Drayton Farley, Curtis McMurtry, Taco Tapes, Lowstar Rodeo, Jocelyn Mackenzie, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Ben Varian, Jordan Krimston, The Laughing Chimes, Buzzy Lee, Sitka Sun and Crystal Canyon also released great new albums and Bingo Rider dropped a gorgeous EP. A few of those might be from earlier January.

There’s also some Bandcamp albums only that I highly recommend. There’s new albums from Steve Sloane, John Calvin Abney, Ryan Allen and an EP by Charlotte Moroz & Guy Capecelatro III. And probably lots more.

The Finnish section has a great run of singles from Litku Klemetti, Hulda Huima, Janne Laurila, Samae Koskinen, Arppa, Black Twig, Verandan, Bobby Oroza, Lettoman and Juha Mäki-Patola. Oh and then there’s an EP from Puiset Heilat.

The big international single is the fabulous new song from all-time greats Teenage Fanclub. I also really love the new single from Michael Feuerstack. Jay Gonzalez announced a new album and released a first single from it. Some other cool things were new songs from Carla Geneve, Roseanne Reid, Via Mardot, Dan Wriggins, Sunny War, Jason Sinkhorn and so forth. As usual, I could namedrop them all tell here, but you’ll find them from the list below.

That is all for this week. Thank you for reading and listening. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #120

Another week, another new music weekly.

I got distracted with hockey trade news and didn’t have time to listen to new music that much. A new week and a new bad excuse. But I’ll do a better job eventually. Thankfully the release schedule isn’t super crowded in January.

The new albums this week came from This Frontier Needs Heroes, Mason Lindahl and Typhoon. That powerpop album from The Airport 77s is an earlier January release. There’s also an EP from Madeline Kenney.

From Finland the big one for me is the new single from Kielo Kärkkäinen. There’s also new albums from Suad and Mama Longhorn and a single from Nina Kaitaranta. Also revisiting Haamusoittajat EP from the past week.
