OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #328

Always late Sunday evening these days, but here’s finally a new edition of the new music weekly.

New Josiah Flores album can be the album of the week. Lots of great songwriting on that record and a beautiful Townes Van Zandt cover too. Also thrilled about new Christo Graham album, but it’s 22 songs so I haven’t even had the time to listen the whole thing yet. Something to dive into during the next few days. When it comes to EPs the First Works of 54 Ultra is a really big deal. Other albums gems came from Chad Price Peace Coalition, Foxwarren, The Minus 5, Ben Kweller, Shura, Labrador, Reed Turchi, Theatre Royal, Grey Causeway, Sea Dramas (EP) and Frown Town (this last one is a week or two old, but I missed it then).

Quite a few great Finnish albums too. There’s new ones from Jenna-Marie Laine, Petra Poutanen, Salla Karonen, KiPPO, Samase and Carla Aakre. Also great to have MeriTuuli back with a new single. Vehje too with a song that resonates almost too much. Then there’s awesome Emmy June single too so things look good in Finland.

Magnolia Electric Co and Will Johnson have joined forces to create Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co. Their take on The Big Beast is the international single of the week. Other early faves came from Dana Sipos, Jessica Risker, Drugdealer feat Weyes Blood… again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. xOh and Remember that Barbara Manning will tour in Finland soon. Extremely highly recommended. Schedule is as follows:

11.6. Barbara Manning (US) & Hulda Huima (duo) / Vastavirta-Klubi
12.6. Barbara Manning (US) + Hulda Huima (duo) / G Livelab Helsinki
13.6. Pe 13.6. Barbara Manning (USA), Phardah, Hulda Huima Duo, SUISTO
14.6. Barbara Manning, Hulda Huima (duo), Kirkkopuiston terassi, Turku

Before that another one of these things next weekend. Until then. Love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #327

I was away from home for the weekend, so another quick and late edition of the new music weekly. There’s definitely stuff missing, but here’s what I managed to put together Sunday evening.

Hectorine is the album of the week. The first single Is Love an Illusion? is my favorite song of 2025 so far and this album is also wonderful. Extremely highly recommended. Love that Logan Farmer EP too. Other album gems came from Florry, My Politic, Moontype, New Chance, meka, TWINS, Stereolab, Bouguet, Phi-Psonics, River Crombie, Elk Hound (rarities comp), Robert Forster, Tor Thomassen, Silverada, Sam Stoane, Caitlin Canty (full album only CD/Vinyl for now, download/stream in October) and Evan Bartels (EP).

The highlight of the Finnish section is the new Jean Ramsay album. I mentioned it a month ago when it was just CD or Bandcamp download, but now this minimalistic rootsy greatness is also available on the evil streamers. Check it out. Other Finnish gems are singles from The Chiefs, Tinyhawk & Bizzarro, Jenna-Marie Laine, The HuHuman, Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L, Tomi Puukko, Lodger and Vasas flora och fauna feat Folke Nikanor.

International single of the week is the new Josiah Flores song. A powerful protest song for migrant worker rights. Important during these dark times. Long time favorite Joe Bourdet hit a homerun too with his meadow rock rendition of an old Dan Fogelberg tune Illinois. Some other big early faves are new ones from James McMurtry, Cooper Kenward, Evan Blix, Michael Robert Murphy, R & D, Ryli… again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Sorry if I forgot some stuff. It’s close to midnight, so this will have to do. Back next week with another of these things. Love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #325

This one felt like a tiny bit slower release week, but somehow I still managed to end up with a 70 song playlist. Phew.

Kristina Murray and King Hüsky can share the album of the week honors, so you’ll get both sides of this blog. One great country album and one great pop album. Other new albums this week came from Caitlin Cannon, Brian Bilston and The Catenary Wires, Adult Mom, Alien Boy, Babe Lewis, Why Dogs Why (EP), I’m With Her, Maia Friedman, Pascale Cheron (full album on Bandcamp), Cash Langdon (this was last week, but just found it thanks to the almighty New Commute), John Cathal O’Brien (EP), Peter Donovan, Simon Linsteadt (EP) and Cole Pulice.

My favorite Finnish release this week is the new ITE EEROLA album Kolmen päivän levy IV. The whole thing was again written and recorded in three days and still at least half of these songs are so wonderful that I love them with all my heart and the rest are very good too. Se mitä en uskaltanut sanoa, Lämmintä viiniä and Outo katse go to that first category. I don’t really know how Reetta is always able to create something so beautiful and moving in such a short time frame. A special talent. Oh and of course there’s other Finnish gems too. We have beautiful albums from Ville Vuorenmaa (from the mighty Sur-rur), Kirsikkapuu and Isse plus singles from Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Asla Jo, Litku Klemetti, Ani Harmi, Orvokki, KiPPO and Puhelinseksi. Oh and The Rocks EP too. This one is available on cassette and non-Spotify streaming services. So there’s a track on the Tidal version of this playlist.

The international single of the week is the new one from Hectorine. This is the third one and all of them are marvellous. The first one is still my favorite song of the year so far. Full AOTY level album out later this month. Expect to be mesmerized. Other early faves came from 54 Ultra, Josienne Clarke, Daniel Romano, Allo Darlin’.. again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. A lot of good concert stuff coming up next week. Jenny Don’t and the Spurs are touring in Finland and so are David Ramirez and Noah Gundersen. And on the Finnish side of things the already mentioned ITE EEROLA returns to stage after a small break. And most likely a lot of other good stuff. Live music is the best. But back next week with another one of these as well. Love.

1. Kristina Murray – Phenix City (Little Blue, Normaltown Records)
2. Caitlin Cannon – Let It Hurt Some (Love Addict)
3. Brian Bilston and The Catenary Wires – Every Song on the Radio Reminds Me of You (Sounds Made by Humans, Skep Wax)
