Flora Hibberd, St. Lenox, Jake McKelvie, Fonteyn

Just a quick post of songs and music videos that I love.

First long-time fave Flora Hibberd with a song called Canopy from the forthcoming album Swirl. So eager to hear this album, because I love Flora Hibberd’s songs and this was also produced by Shane Leonard and features J.E.Sunde at least on this song. I love all these people I’ve never met and they all belong in the imaginary hall of fame of this little music blog.

Next something pretty new for me. I didn’t know singer-songwiter Jake McKelvie before I heard this new album A New Kind of Hat a couple of weeks ago. I’ve had it on heavy rotation lately and like the album a lot. Sometimes it kind of reminds me of Darren Hanlon.

The great St.Lenox is also getting ready to release a new album. Ten Modern American Work Songs will come out on 25th of October on Don Giovanni Records. I always love his songs and music videos too. The first single Rudy is not an exception. Plus there’s a beautiful dog and two beautiful cats there too on the video. What’s not to love.

This song has been out since February, but this not really an active music blog outside of that one weekly new music playlist. But I loved this Fonteyn single back then and still do. So here’s some seventies kinda gold from 2024 to wrap up this tiny blog post.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #293

The Softies has a new album. How lovely is that. Loved them so much during my indie kid days. And still do as a middle-aged americana guy. A great release week altogether as well. We have new albums from Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Chime School, The Secret Beach, Michael Cloud Duguay, Paige Plaisance, India Ramey, Rosy Boa (EP, a new one for me, but really liked this on quick listen), Wren Kitz, Andrew Combs, Bill (EP), Giant Day, The Medium, Benny Trokan, Emma Russack, Wild Ponies, Embla and the Karidotters, Ruthie Foster, Lydia Loveless (new versions of Somewhere Else songs) and Glenn Musto. Btw, Glenn has a couple of shows in Finland next week. Thursday in Helsinki and Friday in Turku.

The Finnish part is again my favorite, because there’s a new ITE EEROLA song in this world and in my heart. A shoulder to lean on right there. There’s also beautiful new singles from Lempi Elo, Henna Emilia Hietamäki, Saimaa, Joose Keskitalo & The Mystic Revelation of Teppo Repo and 1980 AD. Oh and at the end there’s another song from last week’s Hattara album.

International single of the week is the first one from the forthcoming new St.Lenox album. Check out the new music video too, because those are always great and this one has two cats and a dog too. What’s not to love. Other early faves came from Chris Acker, Fiver, Joanna Sternberg, Christian Lee Hutson, Jenina MacGillivray and Adam Selzer. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters when I ponder the essence of this music blog and playlist. This thing hits 23 years in less than a month. That’s a long time to invest on a small music blog. But most times it feels like it was worth it. This one was again a good live music week too, because I got to see The Darts (US), Nightbird and Faarao Pirttikangas. Can’t really beat live music. Anyway, back next week and all that. It will be late on Sunday then I think. Love love.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to other platforms. This means a few tracks might be missing from the from the other platforms, if they are not available there. Oh and there’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #292

Here we go again.

International album of the week is most likely the new Pony Bradshaw. I’ve only listened a little bit of it so far and will fully get into that one when I have more time to really focus. But I assume I’m going to love it. There’s also great new albums from Icarus Phoenix, Starflyer 59, New Starts, Alfie Firmin, Slippers, Willi Carlisle (live EP), The Down Hill Strugglers, Bella White (covers EP), Abby Webster, Her Crooked Heart (EP) and Clark Paterson. On the only on Bandcamp side of things, there’s a new Guy Capecelatro III & Terry Palmer album. Check that out too there.

The Finnish part is my favorite this week. Especially because there’s the debut album from dream pop band Hattara. I love them and this new record too. Instantly one of my favorite Finnish albums of the year so far. Therefore went with a rare double and featured them twice on this one. Once in the beginning and once with the other great Finnish cuts. These other beauties are album from Hot Heros plus singles from Litku Klemetti, Rosita Luu, Ocelot, Keba, Ethel Suspense and Pekka Laine feat Jay Nemor. All really really good.
