News: Minä ja Ville Ahonen

The debut album by Minä ja Ville Ahonen has just been released by Johanna Kustannus. I admit that I didn’t really expect much from this, but this again proves that one better push the play button before forming opinions. This may not be totally my kind of stuff, but it is actually a rather impressive album. Somehow it’s very unique and still very easy to approach and enjoy. If Kuusumun Profeetta tried to make a pop album, maybe it would sound something like this..

A Quick review: Barb – Barb

Barb: Barb (Yep Roc, 2010)

A gigantic disappointment. Liam Finn’s solo debut I’ll Be Lightning was/is a huge favourite of mine and worth all the hearts in the world. Nowadays Liam Finn is in a band called Barb and therefore I had high hopes that I would like this album. Unfortunately I just don’t. I red somewhere that this super group from New Zealand just booked a studio for a month before they had written any songs and it kind of sounds like they didn’t bother writing the songs in the studio either. I suppose you might find this thrilling if you enjoy weird and experimental pop music, but I’m a fan of simple pop music and for me this is just incredibly boring.  Ok, It’s got some nice moments  here and there (but not everywhere) and a couple of good songs on the latter half of the album, but I do hope this will remain as a side project and Liam Finn will make another stunning solo album in the not-so-distant future.

Video of the Day #19: Jim Bryson & John K Samson

I’m pretty excited about the upcoming album Falcon Lake Incident by Jim Bryson & The Weakerthans. I can’t say I’m familiar with Jim’s work (I probably should be), but I absolutely love The Weakerthans. The album is out on october 19th and this is the lead off track Raised All Wrong. This already sounds great to me, even though there’s just two guys singing a short song somewhere around town. I love it and I can hardly wait to hear the album.
