Video of the Day #11: The Britannicas

Today’s video takes us to Australia, Sweden and USA. All in one video. The Britannicas are taking this international pop thing to a whole another level and are making great pop songs and cool videos despite the fact that the three members all live in different continents thousands of miles away from each other. The Britannicas are Joe Algeri from australia (Jack & The Beanstalk, solo), Magnus Karlsson from Sweden (The Charade, Happydeadmen) and Herb Eimerman from USA (Nerk Twins, solo). They’ve written lots of wonderful pop songs in the past with their other bands and solo projects. This new song called Those Good Vibrations proves that they haven’t lost that songwriting skill during the years. A bit like early Teenage Fanclub at times and that’s never a bad thing. The debut album by The Britannicas came out earlier in the summer on the very cool Kool Kat Musik label.

Video of the Day #10: Magenta Skycode

Finally we arrive to Finland and it’s time for cuteness warning. Magenta Skycode’s new song is called The Simple Pleasures and it’s probably a great song. I can’t be sure, because I’m just adoring the stars of the video with a stupid a smile on my face and don’t pay any attention to the song itself. Ok, even though Astrid and Quru are the heroes of the day, I love the song as well. Actually much more than I thought I would. I love that they are nowadays much more brighter than before. That suits me well. Oh.. and did I already mention that the cats are adorable.

Review: Ben’s Diapers – Up In The Mountains, Deep In The Sea

Ben’s Diapers: Up in the Mountains, Deep in the Sea (Rhythm Barrel Records / Plastic Passion, 2010)

Ben’s Diapers released their latest album Up in the Mountains, Deep in the Sea several months ago in early 2010, and I’m rather ashamed that it took me this long to actually write a review about it.  Their focus is still on the country-tinged power pop and alt.country, but it does seem that the band is nowadays more than willing to make their musical scale a little wider and does throw a couple of curve balls to the prejudiced listeners in the process. However, the Elton John of the 70s playing borderline cheesy AM pop & piano ballads type of thing does work and add some nice versatility to the album. If that still sounded a little scary, here’s a quick antidote. Thank You Girls is a great rocker with a sing-along chorus in the vein of Cheap Trick.. or even early KISS.  These two examples were still in the minority and mostly Ben’s Diapers serves high quality pop music where the main ingredients are powerful playing, beautiful harmonies and catchy-as-hell melodies. And when a fair share of it is spiced up with some country flavours, this customer is definitely happy and ready to order more.
