Bears – Greater Lakes

I’ve lost touch with the indie pop world during the last couple of years, but maybe things change during 2012 because there’s plenty of great records coming out. For example new Burning Hearts is out next week, new Cats on Fire in the spring… and new Bears album on valentine’s day.

Bears is an indie pop band from Cleveland, OH and their new album is entitled Greater Lakes. It is utterly wonderful. My girlfriend was the first one to notice that in our household. She always put this record on and soon I started to realize how delightful and beautiful this pop album really was and it was time to put those country records aside for a moment and just listen to Bears. This is the first single Eleven A.M.

David Myhr to Flavour of the Month!

I’m extremely excited about this. David Myhr will play at our Flavour of the Month club on 2.3.2012 (Pikku-Torre, Turku). David Myhr is a marvellous pop tunesmith and used to play in one of my favourite pop groups The Merrymakers. Their albums No Sleep ’til Famous and Bubblegun are power pop classics. David Myhr is currently getting ready to release his solo debut Soundshine in Europe. Lucky Japanese pop fans have already been able to enjoy the record, because december 2011 was the Japanese release date. The first singles Got You Where He Wanted and Looking For A Life are both excellent. Check them out below and come to the show on 02.03.2012.

Flavour Of The Monthin kevättalvi

Turkulaisen kitaraindieklubi Flavour Of The Monthin kevättalvi tuo Pikku-Torren legendaariselle lavalle niin kotimaista kuin ruotsalaistakin alan huippuosaamista.

Helmikuun klubi-ilta on perjantaina 3.2. ja tuolloin esiintyjinä nähdään ja kuullaan tamperelaista americana/folk/country-yhtye Ochre Roomia sekä turkulaista laulaja-lauluntekijää Markus Perttulaa, jonka lähes jeffbuckleymaiset laulusuoritukset ovat aina komeaa kuultavaa.

Maaliskuussa luvassa on korkea-arvoinen ruotsalaisvieras poplaulunkirjoittamisen päämiestasolta, kun 90-luvulla The Merrymakers-yhtyeessä vaikuttanut David Myhr saapuu Flavour Of The Monthiin näyttämään, miten melodiat rakennetaan ja laulut lauletaan The Beatlesin, Jellyfishin ja muiden huipputekijöiden tyyliin. Kyseessä on yksi Flavour Of The Monthin 13-vuotisen taipaleen kovimmista esiintyjäkaappauksista. Myhrin lämmittelyakti perjantain 2.3. keikalle on vielä varmistamatta; vapaamuotoisia hakemuksia otetaan vastaan osoitteessa mikko.lappalainen@turku.fi!

For all the Girls – For all the Girls

Every pop band should have at least one song where the title of the song is a name of a girl. For all The Girls have gone several steps further and only have these kind of songs. Well, I don’t mind at all. Damien Fairchild is writing love songs for girls and he is good at it. He has been releasing one song every month since september and the debut album will see the light of the day on 14th of february. I should have written about him many times, because I instantly loved the first song Amrit and have since enjoyed each and every song. These won’t win the composition of year award, but sometimes simple two-minute songs about girls is all one needs. Some are marvellous, some are only good, but everything is so enjoyable. Auto-tune Funk Folk is the tongue-in-cheek description on For All The Girls’ Facebook. I sometimes think of Magnetic Fields and Jonathan Richman while listening to the album. These are my favourites from the ones that are already out and available.

Ferns – Fairweather Friends

I can’t say I’m a big expert on malaysian indie pop, but back in 2007 I found Ferns’ debut album On Botany and I still pick that record from the shelf from time to time. In late december 2011, I learned that the band is still around and just released a new album. Fairweather Friends is another really lovely and sweet indie pop album. This is Hey OK. Check out the whole album on their bandcamp.
