Onechord.net turns 15: Barna Howard – Turns Around the Bottle

barna

Sticking in Portland for the time being and could stay there for several entries on this anniversary thingy. The whole Mama Bird family could and should be here and then there’s Huck and Richmond Fontaine and ton of other things. Portland rules my world. Actually Adam Selzer from the previous entry produced and recorded Barna Howard’s second album Quite A Feelin’. While that one is just as wonderful, I have to go with a song from the debut on this. After all, the self-titled Barna Howard album is one of the dearest and nearest to my heart. Besides being a magnificent album filled with the finest songwriting, it was my introduction to my current favourite record label, Mama Bird Recording Co. During the past five years they’ve released a lot of albums that I hold oh so dear. Myriam Gendron, Widower, Vikesh Kapoor etc. Just wonderful. And their 2016 releases from Courtney Marie Andrews and Birger Olsen are both among the year’s finest. I don’t really have an absolute favourite song on Barna’s classic debut, because I love all of them. Maybe I might be the most fond I’ll Let You Pick Window, but I’ll go with this live version of Turns Around the Bottle.

And here’s the first single Promise, I Won’t Laugh as a bonus.

Onechord.net reaches 15 years on September 17. Leading up to that, I will be sharing some songs that I hold dear. Songs that I’ve loved the most during the years I’ve been making this. So basicly just some nostalgic crap, but with a damn brilliant soundtrack.

John Calvin Abney – Far Cries and Close Calls (pre-order)

abne

Here’s an early shout out about the forthcoming John Calvin Abney album Far Cries and Close Calls that is due out September 23, 2016. I’ll get back to this later in the fall when it’s out and available. However, the pre-order and one song Goodbye Temporarily are already up at Bandcamp. I’ve listened to the album a couple of times and I think it’s awesome as was expected. John Calvin Abney is an Oklahoma-based songwriter and musician. Besides doing his own gorgeous thing, you might hear him play on a bunch of other great albums (John Moreland, Small Houses, Chris Porter, M.Lockwood Porter etc). The new album will be released by Horton Records in USA and CRS/Continental Record Services in Europe. Here’s the excellent first outtake Goodbye Temporarily that premiered at Popmatters a week ago.

Joey Kneiser & Kelly Smith 7″

image

Hold the press, we have major news! There’s new music from Joey Kneiser & Kelly Smith. Seven inch split single coming up 23rd of September on Different Folk Records. Joey wrote both songs and sings one side and Kelly sings the other side. Kelly’s side is called Lost in The Wind and it’s already available in form of a magnificent music video. It’s an incredibly powerful song dedicated to everyone who has lost a sibling. Even though I knew it’s going to be special even before hitting the play button, it still took my breath away and stopped the time. Ever since I heard it, I’ve just been listening to it over and over again. You can watch the video below and pre-order the 7″ from Different Folk Records.

Tim Easton – American Fork

easotn

Tim Easton’s new gorgeous album American Fork came out on September 2, 2016. This is one of those co-releases with Last Chance (USA) and At The Helm Records (UK). This new one is uplifting and little adventurous, but I’m perfectly fine with that. Being miserable for no apparent reason is one of the few things I’m extremely good at, so instead of continuously relating with the saddest of songs, it’s quite refreshing to listen to such an uplifting album for a change. This album opener Right Before Your Own Eyes is so extremely catchy that it should be a hit. The kind of stuff that I would love to hear on the radio.
