OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #185

Another week, another new music weekly.

What a busy weekend with the Eurovision song contest and NHL game seven action. Another early exit for Toronto and I do feel bad for the Leafs fans. I’m not one myself, but I listen most episodes of the Steve Dangle podcast at work and therefore know the team pretty well. The first playoff round was fun, but I’m also grateful it ends tonight. Need to catch up on sleeping and music. Here’s what I managed to gather for this new music weekly.

Matt Dorrien’s new album is the album of the week here. Other big personal favorites came from Simon Joyner, Chris Bathgate and Joseph Huber. Ok, I’m not exactly sure is the Simon Joyner availability a mistake, because May 20 seem to be the release date everywhere. But it’s available to stream, so let’s go with that. We also got new albums from Monophonics, Kevin Morby, Mama’s Broke, Sequoia (EP), Derek Piotr, 49 Winchester, Donna Blue, Yves Jarvis, Nectar and Tom Brosseau. That Brosseau also has later release date elsewhere, but seem to be available.

New Klasu EP is the jewel of the Finnish section. Other Finnish gems this week are album from Ananas and run of singles from Mikael H, Ylva Haru, AURAL, Otto Mikkola, Kissa, Vuoret, Of Wild and Arppa. Plus a revisit to last week’s A.Reikko album. There’s a big one outside of the evil streaming world though, because Jukka Nousiainen & Kumpp have a new album available on Bandcamp. Oh yeah and I did left out the new Joensuu 1685. It’s a really good one, but it’s about 16 minutes long and this playlist is already longer than what anyone will listen.

International single of the week is probably that new Robert Leslie tune. I’m very fond of the songs he has released during the recent months. Other favorites came from Wilco, M.Lockwood Porter, American Aquarium, Arlo McKinley, Will Stewart, Matthew McNeal and The Burning Hell. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. This week I even thought of writing another kind of blog post, but didn’t end up doing it anyway. But maybe it’s a start to even consider doing one haha. Back next week with this new music weekly. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #184

Another week, another new music weekly.

The other kind of blog activity is still non-existent but here’s the new releases once again.

Brennen Leigh and Katie Spencer can share the album of the week title, because I love both of these beautiful releases. Katie’s album is not on Tidal, so check that out on Spotify (or better yet at Bandcamp / record store). This week we also got marvellous new releases from Leyla McCalla, Jim Bryson, Jacksonport (if you listen this regularly you’ve heard all songs, because he first released a new song from the album like every two weeks or so. A good way to get most exposure at least on this not-that-relevant little playlist), Stanhope, Belle & Sebastian, Ryan Necci & The Buffalo Gospel (EP), Sadurn, Tommy and the Ohs (one that I missed before), Phillip Jon Taylor, Luke Winslow-King, Greta Morgan (instrumental EP), Benjamin Adair Murphy (EP), Hater and Sharon Van Etten.

A new A.Reikko album leads the Finnish section. You may know him from Koria Kitten Riot and Johnny Superhero. This solo stuff in Finnish is equally brilliant. Faarao Pirttikangas & Nubialaiset also released an album. Other Finnish cuts are singles from Mara Balls, Ylva Haru, Eerika ja Sakari, Aino & Miihkali, Nina Kaitaranta, Lake Huttula and Bobby Oroza. There was probably more. Again a lot of the Finnish stuff is missing from Tidal version. I don’t know is Tidal having royalty payment issues or what is the reason, but seems like Spotify is far better for Finnish music.

The international single of the week has to be the new Ian Daniel Kehoe. He always keep me pushing me and forcing me to expand my listening habits. Highly recommended Colin Medley’s gorgeous music video for the song too. Some sensual folding for you there. Check it out on youtube. Other big faves this week came from Clara Mann, Joan Shelley, S.G. Goodman, Reverend Baron, Michael Rault, The Burning Hell, Nathan Kalish, I Was a King, The Boys With Perpetual Nervousness, Bob Sumner, Kelsey Waldon, Scott Ballew and Field Guides. Just to name a few. Quite often one of the tracks on the very end of the playlist later during the week when I’ve had more time to listen these.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. I appreciate all of it and it gives a reason to keep doing this. Current goal is to hit that 200 episodes mark and then reconsider the sanity of this project. I did pay the domain and web hosting bill for another year, so at least on some level things will continue for another year. Love from a distance.

1. Brennen Leigh feat Asleep at the Wheel – If I Treated You Like You Treat Me (Obsessed With the West, Signature Sounds, 2022)

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #183

Another week, another new music weekly.

A rather busy weekend, because of Vappu and hockey overdose. The latter only gets worse now that the NHL playoffs are getting underway. Maybe I need to make some hockey + music combination blog like country cross-check. Anyway, here are the new releases I managed to find this weekend. Some probably flew under my radar.

This was quite a heavy release week. A whole lot of personal favorites this week as well. Let’s give that album of the week title to MJ Lenderman’s new album. Such a great record that makes me feel a couple of decades younger. I’m also a big fan of Steven Lambke, Izaak Opatz and Caroline Spence and all of their albums sound marvellous on first listen. I had never heard of Ivy Wye before I made my usual bandcamp new release search for this new music weekly, but oh my how I instantly fell in love with that EP. I’ve been on the verge of quitting this new music weekly several times, but treasures like this are the reason to do this every weekend. That’s far from all though and there’s also a whole lot more greatness that I’m going to listen more thoroughly during the coming week. There’s new releases from Hanna Haas, Frontperson, Julie & Dany, Tomberlin, Dana Gavanski, Mitch Davis, Jonas Lundvall, Megg Farrell, Erika Lewis, Fountaindale, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Best Bets, Basketball Knees, Jens Lekman (reissue or new, you tell me, good anyway), The Coffis Brothers, Willie Nelson and Peter Donovan.

Strong Finnish singles section too. Last week’s Bandcamp gem from Haamusoittajat is now streaming too. Jari Raaste and Klasu returned with new beauties and some Veli tracks from Bandcamp appeared on these evil platforms too. Every Ylva Haru song is something to love and cherish and then there’s also new singles from Tamara Luonto, Faarao Pirttikangas & Nubialaiset and Team Play. Again several Finnish tracks seem to be missing from Tidal.

Finally the international singles too. The early part of the playlist is filled with new album tracks, but there’s a whole lot of single gold too. We got new ones from Wilco and Caleb Caudle plus further gold from the forthcoming John Calvin Abney, Katie Spencer, Stanhope and Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears albums. Later on the playlist there’s some cover treasures and new songs from Thomas Dollbaum, Mikey Erg, Wharfer and so forth. They would all be worthy of a namedrop on this text part too.

That’s all for this week. The follower count reached 600 this week at least temporarily on the evil Spotify (Tidal doesn’t share such info). That’s hardly viral, but still nice to see that number slowly rising. I know these vanity metrics aren’t really important, but without them it’s kinda hard to tell is anyone interested. So thanks for the follows and love from a distance.

1. MJ Lenderman – Tastes Just Like It Costs (Boat Songs, Dear Life Records, 2022)
2. Steven Lambke – The World Filled to The Brim (Volcano Volcano, You’ve Changed Records, 2022)

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #182

Another week, another new music weekly.

Back to the more normal routine at least for a week. Vappu is already lurking around the corner, which might cause a small delay next weekend. So the next one might be late Sunday unless I’m proactive and get this done early on Saturday. Anyway, here are the great new releases of this current week.

The new Joshua Hedley is the album of the week, but there’s plenty of other gems too. We got new albums from Charley Crockett, Li’l Andy, Drunken Prayer, Abigail Lapell, Chris Brain, Kate Bollinger (EP), Neko Case (retrospective with one new song), Georgia Harmer, Kathryn Joseph, Cheap Star (this has been out for a while, but it wasn’t streaming back then. Maybe it has been for a while, but I have missed it), Jeanines, Crystal Eyes, Sadie Gustafson-Zook, Heaven’s Cameras (a few weeks old that I’ve missed before), Jane Inc and The Johans (EP).

A couple of album beauties from the Helmi Levyt vaults lead the Finnish section. These are Paavoharju & Keskitalo and JLaine. We also got that collaboration EP from Agents and Maustetytöt. Then there’s some fabulous debut singles from Tulio, Ville Miettinen and Suosikki. Oh yeah and Puhelinseksi released another great one from their forthcoming album and AK-77 made a love letter for long drink. AURAL’s beautiful single is a few months old, but first time on this little playlist. My favorite Finnish song of the week is probably that lovely Tulio single. Or actually that might be the new Haamusoittajat song, but that is only on Bandcamp for now. A lot of the Finnish stuff seem to be missing from Tidal, so use Spotify if you want to hear all of them.

And finally the international singles of the week. Plenty to love like always. Shawn Hess has a couple country beauties out there and MJ Lenderman continues to deliver damn brilliant 90s influenced singles. That MJ Lenderman album is going to be so awesome. Merge Records signed Friendship and I love that. And I love their new song. John Moreland announced new album and released first single. Laura Veirs did the same. Some other favorites came from Jo Schornikow, Lindsay Clark, Hanna Haas, Rachel Sermanni. Oh and Sylvie made a superb cover of Hold on Magnolia. Just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. I appreciate all that stuff. Sorry for all those awkward transitions on this playlist below. Maybe got bit carried away there. Back next week. Might go until Sunday evening, but we’ll see.
