OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #171

Another week, another new music weekly.

A big week in music, because we have a new Erin Rae album in this world. Absolutely love it based on a few early spins and I don’t expect my feelings to change in the future. Josienne Clarke’s EP and the new album from The Reds, Pinks and Purples also matter a great deal to me. There’s plenty more though, which I will listen more thoroughly during the week. We have new albums from The High Water Marks, Ryan Allen (EP that has been on Bandcamp a couple of weeks, Matt Fockler, Mikayla McVey, Gold Light, Jana Pochop, Mitski, Carl Schilde, Cate Le Bon, Seafarers, Heal & Harrow, Marissa Nadler (EP), Love, Burns, Good Morning Bedlam and The Rave-Ups.

From Finland there’s new albums from Keidas, Rohkeat Kuvat and Ite Eerola. Plus a Kalevala themed various artists collection that features some of my favorite artists like Kielo Kärkkäinen and Laura Moisio. Then there’s also great singles from Pintandwefall and M.

And finally the international (should be) single hits. That Lucy Dacus single is fabulous and perhaps my favorite along with the new Joshua Hedley song. We also got gold from David Quinn, Caroline Spence, Scott Ballew, Dana Gavanski, Cactum Blossoms, Bastards of Soul, Young Guv, Ryan Dugre, Triptides, Arre! Arre!, Bastards of Soul, Jacksonport and many others.

That’s it for this week. I did write a few short blog posts this week. I’m not sure are such small things helpful, but I guess it can’t hurt either. Maybe I’ll continue. Don’t really know for sure. This new music weekly is still on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. Choose the one you hate the least and buy some music if you are able to do that. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #170

Another week, another new music weekly.

It’s been a big week in the streaming world. Hopefully it leads to a positive change, but we shall see how it goes. It would be about time to fix streaming so that it will make sense for the artists as well. Of course this current storm didn’t start from that aspect, but hopefully it takes us into that conversation. And on some level it has. I’m not fully convinced that the other platforms are significantly better, but Spotify definitely deserves all the heat they are getting. Plus maybe this kind of small dent in their giant market share makes the streaming world a tiny bit healthier. Well as long as people do subscribe to another service or start buying music again. The awful scenario is that people quit Spotify Premium out of principle without making alternative steps to support musicians and that would only be a net loss for everyone. It could also be that nothing happens and nobody remembers this month from now. Anyway, I think I will personally keep on using Tidal for my own streaming and sync the playlist to Spotify. I probably have to drop Apple Music after the trial, because I prefer Tidal’s interface and my low end factory job doesn’t justify paying for multiple services. Although like I said before, I’d happily pay $30 a month for streaming if the money goes to the artists that I listen to. I haven’t made any final decisions yet and as for now, the new music weekly is still on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. So feel free to select the service you hate the least.

The album of the week is probably the new beautiful Maya de Vitry album. I’ve already listened it several times and really like it a lot. Sad Daddy and Ryan Culwell are other big early favorites from this week’s batch. Actully Sad Daddy’s Up in the Hills is probably my favorite song of the week. That’s not all though and we also got great new releases from Anaïs Mitchell, Stephen Simmons (EP), Simone Felice, Brent Cobb, North Mississippi Allstars, Modern Nature, Josephine Foster, Eels, Bad Heaven Ltd, Wish Kit (EP), The Sad Tomorrows (EP), Steve Gunn (EP), St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Scott Robertson (EP), Chris Bathgate (well just a reissue), Anna Wiebe (EP), Armbruster, Kimberly Morgan York, Fruit Bats (rarities collection) and Clever Hopes. Oh yeah and that Feutre album is from December, but I missed it back then.

The Finnish section has EPs from Liljankukka and Marko Nyberg and an album from Spring Teeth plus a great run of singles from Amuri, V. Härkönen (really love this one), Rohkeat Kuvat, The Skiffs, Pambikallio, Riitaoja and Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola. The Skiffs is a new group but you may know the members Jukka Salminen, Ville Wacklin and Antti Westman from things like Jukka Ässä, Brighboy and Jalava. Oh and then we of course revisit the fabulous Teini-Pää album from the past week.

The international single of the week is the new one from Jerry Leger. Other big favorites came from Erisy Watt, MJ Lenderman, The Weather Station, Madeleine Mosse and Matt Bauer, Ex-Vöid, Georgia Harmer, Slow Motion Cowboys, Freakons, The Inflorescence and Tomberlin. Again just to name a few. All would be worthy of a name drop on this text too, but you’ll find them from the list below.

That’s it for this week. I surprised myself and last week I made a blog post that was not a playlist. We shall see if that was one-off or not. I don’t really have a clue yet. I’d like to do more, but somehow the days usually just flow by because this is just a spare time hobby for me. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #169

Another week, another new music weekly.

It seems like the latest theme update changed a few things. Not sure I like the new font size etc, but I’m probably too lazy to start making changes. Plus editing the css might be a disaster waiting to happen, so perhaps I’ll see if I get used to this new look. The music and words matter more than the layout anyway. This seemed like the first really big release week, so let’s jump into that flood of great music.

Let’s start with the Finnish ones, because there’s a really big one finally out and available. It’s the wonderful debut full-length from Teini-Pää. I’ve loved them wholeheartedly from the start and I have zero need to start regulating my feelings towards them after hearing this super catchy punk rock beauty. The only other Finnish tracks are the excellent new Rosita Luu single and another cut from last week’s Punomo album.

The international album schedule got busy and there are plenty of great new albums. The album of the week here got to be the new Lost Dog Street Band that hit me pretty hard with just one single spin. I look forward to diving deeper into that one during the coming week. There’s also new albums from Jake Xerxes Fussell, Goodnight, Texas, The Whitmore Sisters, Anna Ash, Lonny, Marjorie (EP or a mini-album), Annika Norlin (aka Hello Saferide), Pedro the Lion, Artsick, Onsloow, Kids on a Crime Spree, The Genuine Fakes (EP, now streaming, has been on Bandcamp for a month or two), Adam Ross (Randolph’s Leap man going solo), Good Good Blood, Ben Sures, Aoife O’Donovan, Jana Horn, Dominic Billett, Fernando Viciconte, Robert Stillman and Henry Grace (a week old, thanks to TIAMS for the tip). Outside of streaming there’s at least Luka Kuplowsky’s new album of meditations and Ryan Allen’s EP.

And finally the international songs of the week. First apologies for somehow missing the new Darren Hanlon single in November. There was album announcement this week and after that I noticed that the first single has been out for a while. Well it’s finally on this playlist too. Other big favorites on the list this week came from MAITA, Apollo Ghosts, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, The Wave Pictures, Croy and the Boys, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears, Josienne Clarke, Renata Zeiguer, Robert Leslie, Theo Lawrence. Again just to name a few. There’s gold throughout the list. Even at the very end, there’s a really beautiful new Ryan Dugre single and a previously unreleased Songs: Ohia song. Both magical.

That’s it for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

1. Lost Dog Street Band – Beautiful Curse (Glory, 2022)
2. Jake Xerxes Fussell – Carriebelle (Good and Green Again, Paradise of Bachelors, 2022)

OCTA Music Weekly- Episode #168

Another week, another new music weekly.

Not a whole lot album releases yet, but a whole lot of singles and album announcements. Therefore the length of this got out of hand and I had to leave some singles out.

Not a clear cut album of the week, because I’ve enjoyed The Kernal, Elijah Johnston, Steph Green and Jamestown Revival pretty much equally. That’s not all though and we also got albums from The Neverists, The Nunnery, Fuss, Elvis Costello & The Impressions, Cat Power (cover), Emily Barker & Lukas Drinkwater (covers), Eliza Kilgyson, Bill Fay (reissue of demos and alternate takes). One big EP release too from Ryley Walker.

The Finnish section is a strong one led by the long-waited debut full-length from Punomo. Turku soul for the masses. I love that record. There’s also two other big album releases from Bad Sauna and Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki. Then there’s a debut single from a Finnish americana / alt. country band SaintPolis (includes members from other blog favorites Ethel Suspense and Cartoon Tree). Other great Finnish singles are from Pintandwefall, Lintudisko (check this one out if you are into shoegaze, a great debut single) and Spring Teeth.

Like previously mentioned we got a plenty of international album announcements with a lead single. Ian Noe, Christian Lee Hutson, Carson McHone and Jeremy Ivey just to name a few. A lot to look forward to in 2022. Erin Rae and The Delines also released further advance singles from their forthcoming albums. All these above can share the song of the week title. That’s not all though and other big faves came from Pearl Charles, Thee Sacred Souls, Kyle Morgan, Tomato Flower and so forth. There’s gold throughout the long playlist.

That’s it for now. I’ll spend the rest of the weekend reading Richard Powers’ wonderful novel The Overstory and watching the NFL playoffs.

If you want to find the older ones I’ve moved them to the weekly playlist archive. So hit that link above and I’m sure you’ll find this playlist too.
