OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #167

Another week, another new music weekly.

Also another year. Not much will change. This new music weekly will go on as usual unless I finally realize how little it makes sense to spend hours every weekend into something that has so little significance. Thankfully I’m too stubborn to understand that. At least for now this is on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music. My Apple Music trial will run out in a few weeks and Tidal in month in a half. After that I need to decide what to do, because my low end factory job doesn’t pay enough to justify me subscribing to multiple streaming services. But at least for a few more weeks, this is available in all three services. This first new music weekly of the year has some late 2021 releases too, because this was on hold for few weeks. I probably forgot something, because I didn’t really keep notes during the hiatus. Sorry about that.

The album of the week is the new North Atlantic Explorers album Night Owls. Vancouver-based songwriter Glenn D’Cruze and his band sure set the bar high for 2022. Such a beautiful album. From the earlier weeks I’ve spent a lot of time with Jake Balzer’s EP and the album by The Craig Torso Show. This week we also got beautiful albums from Jeff Tobias and Daniel Bachman (covers album) plus an EP from Sis. Brandon Padier EP was a 31st of December release. Oh yeah and on Bandcamp there’s a new cover album from Michael Feuerstack.

The big one from Finland is the debut album from J.Kajan. There’s also a run of lovely singles from J.Karjalainen, Treemer, Palor, Bad Sauna and Itä-Hollola Installaatio. Late 2021 magic are the album from Arwi of Lovers and EP/single from Kuningas Koningas.

And finally the international singles. The favorites here are the new songs from Maya De Vitry, Jacob Miller, Jacksonport, Marjorie and Jason McCue. Just to name a few. There’s gold throughout the list. For example among the last few, there is a late 2021 gem from Elijah Johnston. Plenty of cover magic too and you’ll find some Townes Van Zandt, Patrick Fitzgerald, Horse Feathers, Elliot Smith from the playlist.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. That all matters a great deal. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #166

Another week, another new music weekly.

There’s not a whole lot going anymore, but here’s one final new music weekly for 2021. After this short episode, I will put this on hold for 2-4 weeks and return to it in early or mid-january. Oh and there’s an own list for the Christmas songs and other seasonal tunes. You’ll find that here. I’ll add some more there soon, because I’m sure plenty is missing.

There’s not many new album releases. Eric Schroeder and Joshua Rilko are from this week. Treetop Flyers, Gentleman Jesse and firekid I managed to miss while focusing too much on the aoty stuff. Shame on me. I really like that Treetop Flyers album on quick listen. I need to give it a good spin during the holidays. David Garnham and the Reasons to Live album is new to streaming, but it has been available elsewhere like Bandcamp.

From Finland The Lovematches album is now streaming. Before they only had the singles on these evil platforms. The big one is the new Rock Siltanen Group single Santanan Kolmonen. This probably has been out a week or two, but somehow this monster managed to fly under my radar until I saw the music video yesterday. Absolutely love it. There’s only new Finnish singles from Isse, Ilja Karsikas and J. Kajan.

Some international should-be hits too. Song of the week has to be that new The Hellacopters single, which is pretty damn good and surprisingly close to the level of the classic stuff from the late nineties and early 00s. There’s also great new singles from Ryan Culwell, Dalton Domino feat Stephanie Lambring, Brent Cobb, Steph Green, Big Thief and so forth.

That’s it for this week and almost this year. There might or might not be song of the year lists this weekend. Depends if I have the time. If not it probably goes into new year. After that probably at least two week vacation from the new music weekly and other blog related things. Back sometime in January. Still continuing the 20 year long battle of whether to do more, the same or just retire. Now onechordnet is one of the things that just are and there’s nothing really wrong with that, but something new like a midweek q&a feature or whatever might add some much needed spark and worthiness. Hard to just figure out the kind that didn’t require too much time/energy, because manual labor factory job drains all I have. Anyway, thanks to all who have shared, liked and followed this new music weekly or the eoty lists. You have no idea how much it matters. Happy holidays to everyone in case this is the last post of the year and I fail to do the song lists before Christmas. Love from a distance.

1. The Hellacopters – Reap a Hurricane (single, Nucklear Blast, 2021)
2. Treetop Flyers – Castlewood Road (Old Habits, Loose Music, 2021)

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #165

Another week, another new music weekly.

I spent most of the weekend doing the way too long AOTY list and therefore I don’t really have a very good idea what new music is out there. Thankfully all artists don’t care about this year end madness though and even with a quick glance, I was able to put together some kind of playlist. I was cruel and didn’t consider any international albums that came out this week for the aoty list. I just wanted to be able to get the list done and have some kind of Christmas break from the blog. I think that Ryan Pollie for example might have made the cut, if I would have spent some time with it. But enough of this and on to the new releases.

That Ryan Pollie LP is probably the album of the week here, because I really like on quick listen. Other big album releases this week came from Alan Power, Matthew McNeal, Spell Songs, Ken Pomeroy, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Michael Hurley, American Aquarium (more covers etc) and Nicole Atkins. The Wave Pictures album seem to be released in parts and first one is now available.

A pretty good Finnish release week too. The highlight and album of the week is that Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus album, which already made the cut on Finnish albums of the year list because I had heard it in advance). There’s also an album from (proto)Torvinen plus excellent singles from Verandan, Torrances, Antti Autio and Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola.

There’s also bunch of international (should be) hits. Song of the week has to be the new The Delines song closely followed by the new songs from Josienne Clarke and Bart. There’s other great ones too like songs by Jamestown Revival, Jeff Moller & The Marigolds, Sad Daddy and Thomas Dollbaum. Plenty of cover magic too here from Laura Veirs, Memory Spells, Emily Baker..

That’s all for now. Check out the EOTY lists if you feel like it. It took a forever to make them after all. I’ll probably do some quick song of the year lists to highlight a few non-album tracks and so forth, but mostly that will just a playlist longer than anyone will listen. That probably goes until next weekend or so, if it happens at all. I haven’t decided yet am I going to put this new music weekly on hold now and continuing in January. Kind of depends are there enough new stuff coming out next friday. Maybe I’ll just add them on top of this #165. Anyway, now I’m just going to rest a while. So like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #164

Another week, another new music weekly.

The year end madness has started on this website. I posted the EPs of the year earlier in the weekend and favorite Finnish albums will follow this weekend. Then I start working on the international albums mega lists. That should roll out during the next week or two. Focusing on these might also mean I miss some new releases. Feel free to send an angry email if I that happens. Anyway, here are the new releases of the week.

The big one here is the new Andrew Gabbard album. Karma Chief Records / Colemine Records might be better known for delivering soul treasures, but this one is a wonderful pop record. After binge watching Get Back, you should give a spin to this beauty. There’s even an Emitt Rhodes cover in there. I love the whole thing. I also messed up last week and forgot to include the Hinton Bower Jones EP. It’s excellent. By the way, the Jones there is mr Hezekiah Jones. Other new releases came from Andrew Taylor & The Harmonizers, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Aisha Badru (EP), Natalie Schlabs (B-sides EP), Acid Tongue, Winter Grain (EP), Allen LeRoy Hug (EP). Plus a couple of slightly older releases I missed along the way. These are Mylee Grace and Jed Zimmerman.

Finnish section is rather short, but we do have awesome singles from A.Reikko, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki and Samoaja.

And finally the international singles. There’s not one that really jumps up as song of the week, but I’m very fond of the songs by Jay Gavin, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Alexis Mahler, Black Sea Dahu, Mikayla McVey and Sie Sie Benhoff. New great Micah Schnabel song that was previously on Bandcamp is also streaming now. Again just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s all for now. Listmania to follow before the next new music weekly. Oh yeah and there’s separate playlist for the new Christmas songs, because I don’t want to flood this with them. You’ll find that here. That’s pretty much it. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Remember that this is now on Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal. Love from a distance.
