OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #163

Another week, another new music weekly.

First let’s continue last week’s topic. This playlist is now also on Tidal, so this is a real multi-platform adventure for the next three months (Tidal, Apple, Spotify). I’m not too thrilled with all the cyber week nonsense, but I did take Tidal’s 2€ for 3 months offer. It gives me enough time to test drive the app and decide whether I want to switch my own streaming permanently to Tidal. So far I’m otherwise pleased, but they don’t seem to give any tools for 3rd party playlisters. The playlists don’t come up in the search, so the only way to spread the word is to spam the direct link to social media and this blog. It also seems like there’s no way to know if someone is actually following your playlist. It’s not like Spotify is good at giving a lot of info to playlisters, but here you have zero idea if someone is listening or if you are just sending songs into a void and nobody would care if you stopped. Still if Tidal pays artists more fairly, it outweighs a lot of these issues. We shall see how this it goes. Maybe I just need to ask around in three months, if I have any followers over there and should continue the Tidal adventure. If you are on Tidal or have friends or enemies who are there, you’ll find the playlist here. Anyway, here’s the new releases of the week.

A slow release week due to Thanksgiving plus end of the year approaching. There’s one really big one though and that’s the new Julie Doiron album. Extremely highly recommended for sure. Other great new releases came from Cassidy Waring, Jessica’s Brother, Maxwell Stern & Gordon M. Phillips (EP), Shulman Smith, Sara Routh, Miss Tess & Thomas Bryan Eaton. And because this didn’t have a lot of action, I searched some things I might have missed in the earlier weeks. These include Robert Connely Farr (full album on Bandcamp for example, only the single is streaming), Josh Moore, Miss Leo, The Right Here, Scorpion King (EP) and Mouth Painter.

From Finland we have new albums from Color Dolor and Richard Dawson & Circle (yeah, big homers here, so we give Richard a Finnish passport if he is collaborating with Circle). There’s also a run of singles from Anton Haring, Jaakko Eino Kalevi, Dimma and Rohkeat Kuvat. Plus a revisit to last week’s Baby Sweetcorn album.

As for international singles, the imaginary song of the week title goes to the new VanWyck single I Was Innocent. Absolutely love the song. Also very fond of the new ones by Westwood Avenue & Erin Rae, Jay Gavin & Shyanne Mae Gaudet (also check out the older one You’re the Reason Our Kids are Ugly), Lonny, Jonathan Tyler, I am Oak and so forth.

That’s it for the week. Like, follow, share and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #162

Another week, another new music weekly.

Interesting development on the streaming service front with Tidal announcing fan-centered royalties. It won’t solve all the issues with streaming, but it’s definitely a step into the right direction. I would personally happily pay 2 or 3 times what I pay now, if the extra money goes to the artists that I actually listen to. Therefore I need to seriously consider switching over to Tidal, if they have sorted their own issues with delayed royalty payments and such. I would be eager to hear what labels and artists think about this Tidal news and whether they would encourage a switch to that platform. Feel free to drop a public or private comment about the matter. I would love to see fairer streaming payouts and it’s about time for that to happen. This new music weekly is an introductory tool and possibly heplful to artists that are on it. Still I often a have cloud of guilt hanging over me, because the system is so horrible at the moment. And yeah, even if I would move my own listening to Tidal, I would keep the playlist also on Spotify. Even my current following on Spotify don’t really justify all the hours I spent on compiling this and making it only for even smaller Tidal following wouldn’t make much sense. But enough about the music business stuff and on to the new releases of the week.

There’s still a lot of great ones. Dakota Theim and David James Allen can split the album of the week title. That’s not all though and there’s also excellent new releases from Cassidy Snider & The Wranglers (fabulous EP), Cale Tyson, Trevor Nikrant, Paul Bond, Mabilene, Rose Hotel (EP), Eastern Mountain Time, Van Plating, Papercuts (EP), Starpainter (EP), Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Mapache, Ovlov, Big Heet and Snake Lips (EP). Outside of the evil streaming world, we’ll have at least new Ambermor album on Bandcamp. It’s a new project by Chris Coté and Guy Capecelatro III.

From Finland we have a gorgeous album trio from Baby Sweetcorn, Ruissalo Amping and Kuuhullu along with a new single from Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus. All extremely highly recommended. (Note: Apple Music doesn’t seem to have that Baby Sweetcorn track, so that’s only on Spotify).

The international song of the week is the new single from Carlene. I also highly recommend this lovely lyric video for the song. I love those scenes where Carlene and Ruby are together. Another big one is the new The Whitmore Sisters single that is also a homage to the great Chris Porter who tragically passed a way in 2016. Third big favorite is the new Bob Sumner single California. There’s more of course and I’m also fond of new ones from The Wave Pictures, Erin Rae, Drew Danburry, Kimmi Bitter, Carl Schilde, MAITA, Matthew McNeal, Carrie Biell, The Sinseers, Jacksonport and Magnolia. Just to name a few. These are all worthy of a namedrop.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. This is now on Apple Music too like mentioned a week ago. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #161

A little bit news about this new music weekly playlist. This is now on Apple Music too. Well at least for the next three months. I just took the free trial and naturally I’m too poor to pay for multiple streaming services. I rather subcribe to one and buy records with the additional money I have to spent on music. Although I would actually happily pay double or triple the amount to Spotify, if the extra money would go directly to the artists I listen to. Not that interested to pay more if the money goes to major label acts or the extension of Ek’s summer villa. Anyway, if you only have Apple Music and want to give these a spin, you can do that for the next three months. And tell your Apple Music friends too. Maybe if it becomes immensely popular, I might consider keeping it there for longer too, but there’s probably like zero chance of that to actually happen. Also if you want me to move some specific old spotify playlist to Apple Music, just make request. It’s fairly easy to do, but maybe pointless to do unless someone is actually interested in some older playlist. There’s a link to Apple Music on the bottom of this post or search for OCTA Music Weekly. Anyway, here are the new releases of the week.

The schedule is getting somewhat slower, because we are approaching the end of the year. Still plenty to love. Claire Cronin and Harrison Whitford led the charge this week and can share the album of the week title along with newcomer Kiely Connell. I’ve actually spent most time with Kiely’s great debut so far. That’s not all though and we also got new releases from Cedric Noel, Courtney Barnett, Mike Coykendall, Rocko Wheeler, Pleasure Horse (reissue of old EP), Louie Short, Tom Brosseau (another volume of beautiful unreleased rarities), Floating Room (EP), Cody Jinks, Noel McKay (this is some weeks old), Anders Jörnesten (EP, another slightly older one), Corrina Repp and Sally Anne Morgan. Oh and then there’s the wonderful 40 song tribute to the late great Neal Casal. I included a couple of songs here, but there’s a lot of gems on that giant tribute.

Very short Finnish section this time, but we do have a new album from Jori Hulkkonen and a singles from Knipi and KATI. I also included about a month old Susanna album, because I managed to miss it at the time. The best new Finnish thing is the new Sur-rur single, which is not on the streaming services. You’ll find it here for example.

And finally the international singles of the week. A lot of big favorites here with a new song. Izaak Opatz, Philippe Bronchtein and Ryan Necci and the Buffalo Gospel can share the song of the week honors. Very much love also the new ones from Anna Ash, Maya De Vitry, Ryan Culwell, Mitski, The Sadies and Alan Power. Just to name a few. You’ll find them all below.

That’s all for now. Share, like, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #160

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for the small delay. I had some errands and internet connection trouble on Saturday and didn’t had the time to work on this until I woke up on Sunday. Which was 2pm actually. I guess I needed the sleep. Anyway, here are the new releases from this week.

A big release week. The album of the week has to be the new Margo Cilker album. I’ve loved all singles and this has been one of my most anticipated record this fall. Such a great record. Another very big deal is that we have new music from Joey Kneiser (Glossary). He has teamed up with another excellent songwriter Lew Card and together they are called Golden and Rust and just released a beautiful debut album. Then we also have a new album from Charles Wesley Godwin who took the americana world by storm with a powerful album a couple years back and this follow-up is equally impressive. And of course that’s just a fraction of all of the action and we also great new releases from The Roseline, Zachary Lucky (cover album), The Landovers (EP), Megan Nash, Aimee Mann, Jennifer O’Connor, Henry Parker, Courtney Hartman, Renee Reed (EP), Neal Francis, Curtis Harding, Mojohand, This Lonesome Paradise, Tasha, Beau Jennings & The Tigers, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Snail Mail, Alicia Stockman and some fairly unknown pop group called ABBA.

Not that many Finnish picks this week, but there are lovely new singles from Marian Valinta, Ananas, Samanna and Bad Sauna.

As for international singles, there’s so much to love and several big personal long time favorites have new songs out there in this lovely world of ours. I’m referring to artists such as Matt Dorrien, Heather Valley, Christian Lee Hutson, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, The Burning Hell, The Explorers Club and Claire Cronin. From a bit more recent favorites (not that they are new to this playlist), I really like the new ones from Iris Marlowe, David James Allen and Lucy Langlas. Just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.
