OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #97

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Back with another new music round up and this was again quite a week. There’s so much new music to love that it was tough to narrow this down to any reasonable length. But I suppose that’s not a huge concern. You can listen as much or as little you want.

The big one this week for me is the new Courtney Marie Andrews album. Love the Cinder Well album too and what about that Psalmships EP. Oh my. It takes my breath away. Twain’s album is one of my favorites of the year, but I haven’t seen it on Spotify before this week. Other big album releases came from Jess Cornelius, Taylor Swift, Shirley Collins, Lori McKenna, Arna Georgia (ok, this was a week ago but I missed it then), Liza Anne, Katie Dey and Gregory Uhlmann. Plus great EPs from Gladie, Devandra Banhart and the aforementioned Psalmships.

The Finnish section only has the new The Handkerchiefs single and revisits the new Matti Jasu album. I’m sure there had to be more. Oh and there actually is over at Bandcamp. Like the English debut of JonnaT that was produced by Ken Stringfellow. You’ll find it here.

As for international songs, there’s so much to love. One of my all-time favorite songwriters John K. Samson has a new song and one of my new favorites Heather Valley released the first single from her forthcoming album. Lydia Loveless announced a new album and released a fabulous new single. Then we got new outtakes from the forthcoming albums by Sylvie Simmons, Charlie Whitten, Gold Star Gold Star, Colter Wall, Arlo McKinley, H.C. McEntire… All great just like everything else on this long-ish playlist.

That’s it for this week. Thank you for reading and following my little music blog. It matters to me. See you next week or before if I get my act together and manage to write some blog posts. Love from a distance.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #96

Another week, another weekly playlist.

I spent the week vacationing on the countryside, so not a whole lot of blog action during the past week. Back in the city again and back to work on Monday.

Some big album releases this week. S.G. Goodman, Samantha Crain and Dogwood Tales were the big three for me and all are wonderful albums. Or you could make it a quartet by adding the new Tom Brosseau (although this has an official release date of 19th of August, but seems to be already available). The week also gave us excellent new albums from Lianne La Havas, Rob Dobson, Nicholas Mallis, David Ramirez, Drew Danburry (B-sides from forthcoming cassette-only album), Illuminati Hotties, The Chicks, The Texas Gentlemen, Sojourn Suspect, Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards and Ora Cogan . Oh and Joan Shelley’s beautiful live album is now on Spotify too. A couple of EPs too from Pearl Charles and Brooke Bentham.

The Finnish section is rather small, but quality is high. There’s the new Matti Jasu album and a new Helmi treasure from Metsäheikki. Then there’s also The Shouldas EP. They are a band from Lewisburg, PA led by Evan Dresser, but Finnish superhero Thomas Lilley (Daisy, Liljankukka) also plays a major part. The new EP was also recorded in Finland and came out on the wonderful Karhuvaltio Records.

Plenty of singles to love as well. One of my favourite Swedish artists I’m Kingfisher announced a new country album due in October and released the lead single. Juliet McConkey, Victoria Bailey and Emilee Emiko are some new finds for me and all released great singles. New Zephaniah OHora, LadyCouch, Stephen Simmons and Charlie Whitten singles are of course fabulous. Love the Kath Bloom song too that I somehow missed a week or two ago. The War and Treaty single is gorgeous and well I might well name check everything. My favorite song of the week is the opening song Red Bird Morning by S.G. Goodman. I somehow missed the single, so I just heard it for the first time and it absolute floored me. What a song.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #94

Another week, another weekly playlist.

A really slow release week due to the 4th of July I presume. Well plenty of great singles, but not a whole lot of albums. The biggest album release of the week is Roll On by Water Liars. They recorded it five years ago, but it was never released at the time. Now they made it available on Bandcamp. The only international new album on this playlist is the new Willie Nelson album, but there’s wonderful EPs from Red River Dialect, Jane Blanchard, Jason McCue and Daniel Wright. That Tommy Alexander I mentioned a few weeks ago is also now available to stream as well, so I revisited it by adding the sweet closer to this week’s playlist.

The small Finnish section has a gorgeous new album from Robert Ensio Niemistö along with new singles from Grant Wood Company, Teini-Pää, Lapsuus and Jani Matti Juhani.

There was lots of fabulous singles and this starts with a golden song trio from Courtney Marie Andrews, Jenny O. and Le Ren. A new Bill Callahan song is always a treasure and then there was a new album cut from the forthcoming final Jason Molina collection. Not forgetting the greatness of Kristina Murray, Arlo McKinley, Rachel Angel, Charley Crockett, Renee Reed, Michael Robert Murphy (from The Wicked Whispers) and many others.

That’s it for this week. If this week’s playlist week was too short, there’s an eight hour long mid-year list here. I try to make a few blog posts now that I’m on vacation from the day job and have a bit more time to write and listen. No definite promises though. Love from a distance.
