OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #87

Another week, another weekly playlist.

The huge one for this week was the new Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit album, but don’t let that beauty overshadow all the other wonderful releases. That MAITA album is magnificent and Gretchen Peters made captivating versions of Mickey Newbury songs. There’s also great new albums from Mark Fredson, Rose City Band, Jess Williamson, Natalie Jane Hill, Ben de la Cour, Zach Aaron, Pharis & Jason Romero, Glenn Thomas, Caitlin Cannon, The Sweet Water Warblers and Secret Emchy Society. That Jeff Pianki album I managed to miss a while ago, but it’s here now.

The Finnish section revisits the albums from Hermaja, Pöllöt and Guggenheim-projektz and features the new PÄÄ KII single. I’m sure there was more, so sorry if I missed something important.

The single of the week for me is the new J.E.Sunde song that finally got a Euro release this week. One of my favorite songwriters in the world. I also really loved the new Michelle Billingsley song, Jacob Miller has a couple of great new ones and there’s a new one from long time fave Steven Adams. Oh well, many others too, but you’ll find them below.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #86

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Thank you for the ones who keep on following the playlist during these times and thank you music for keeping me relatively sane.

The big album releases for me were the new ones from Sylvia Rose Novak and Adeline Hotel. Sylvia Rose Novak did appear on this playlist in 2018, but sadly I still didn’t pay enough attention to the full album at the time. All the advance singles of this new record have been on this playlist and I’ve loved them all. This time I won’t let the album pass me by. Adeline Hotel is a long time favourite and they continue to create charming albums. Other great album releases of the week came from Andrew Hibbard, Brian Wright & The Sneakups, Aquakultre, Evan Myall and Modern Studies. Lawrence County and Karl Harvey albums came earlier in the spring, but they are on this playlist for the first time. There’s a few mighty good EPs too from Will Stewart and Monteagle.

The Finnish section is strong this time around. Viljami Kukkonen is a huge favorite of mine, so his new single was the brightest star for me. However, there’s also gorgeous album releases from Hermaja, Pöllöt and Guggenheim-projektz. Plus singles from Bizzarro & Jukka Nissinen, Matti Jasu and Love Sport.

As for singles, there’s plenty to love. The best music news of the week was that Secretly Canadian signed Le Ren and their beautiful journey together started with a rerelease of the single Love Can’t Be the Only Reason to Stay. One of the songs I loved the most during 2019. Leah Senior’s new single might be slightly different than her earlier work, but equally wonderful. If not even more so, but I’m not sure is that even possible, because I love her older albums. Anna Ash made a really beautiful cover of Keep Me From Blowing Away and then there’s strong new cuts from Jenny O, Julie Arsenault, Joshua Ray Walker, Christian Lee Hutson, Becca Mancari, Dan Reeder and Tommy Alexander albums. Oh and a new song from Jason Sinkhorn, debut single from Kyle Nix and what about that sweet return of Snowgoose. Also the first single from the new solo acoustic version of Anna Tivel’s 2019 treasure The Question. And lots more.

That’s it for this week. All the best to everyone who reads this. I hope you are safe and sound. Love from a distance.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #85

Another week, another weekly playlist.

I’m not sure does making this playlist ever make any sense, but it does feel particularly stupid after a Bandcamp day. Regardless, I will keep on making this, because right now it feels like the only way to keep this blog alive and I’m not ready to let go of this. I’ll have about one year and 4 months to go until onechordnet is 20 years and I would like to reach that silly goal. This is also a good way to at least mention all the releases that I listen, love and cherish.

This week had lots of great album releases. Long time favorites Andrew Bryant, American Aquarium, Damien Jurado, Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom, Ryan Tanner and John Statz released new albums. There’s also fabulous albums from newer favorites Jeremy Ferrara, Talitha Ferri, Mr. Alec Bowman, V.V. Lightbody, Reb Fountain, My Girl The River, Elijah Ocean, Rattlesnake Milk, Field Report and Olivia Awbrey. That Sean W Spellman album I missed a week ago so it’s here for the first time now. There’s also special new EPs from Cayley Thomas, Christopher Gold, Steven Lambke and Construction & Destruction and John Earle Mainord.

The Finnish section is small with the singles from Marian Valinta and Local Al & Mummypowder. This return of Marian Valinta makes me warm inside. I loved their songs during the early years of onechordnet and it’s great to hear these songs again 15+ years later.

The single of the week is definitely the new Bart single. I love it to bits and could have started the playlist with it. Just wanted to spotlight the album releases before it. Arlo McKinley made a welcome return. I highly recommend his 2014 Lonesome Sound album if you haven’t heard it. Some other choice cuts are the new John Davey single and Matthew Ryan’s cover of Heaven is A Place on Earth (I listened to a lot of Belinda Carlisle back in the eighties). But yeah, I could just as well namedrop them all.

That’s it for this week. All the best to all and everyone. I hope you are safe and sound. Love from a distance.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #84

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Things remain difficult, but thank you music for keeping me a little bit sane. Here’s the new groundhog day survival kit for this week.

Kicking this one off with one of my all-time favorite songs. Vanessa Peters just released a wonderful cover album called Mixtape and it starts with a cover of Aside (The Weakerthans). Another big album releases for me came from Whitney Rose, Peter Oren and Lucinda Williams. That’s just a small fraction of all the released music of this excellent release week. We got new albums from Jon McKiel, Chatham County Line, Marker Starling, Mr. Husband, Diners, The Lowest Pair, Bad History Month, Altadore, Brendan Benson, Bebopalula, Whim, Jeff Crosby, Norma MacDonald and Luke De-Sciscio. And some really special EPs from Luka Kuplowsky (this one is really special one for me, because I’ve been a Luka fan for several years and him joining the Mama Bird family and releasing this beauty in the middle of this chaos at least temporarily divides my world into something manageable), Elk Hound, Eliza Niemi, Merival, Weston Harris Hill and Roseanne Reid.

The Finnish section is very tiny with just the new wonderful Pöllöt single. I’m sure there had to be more.

I can finally feature a song by a big favorite of mine Julie Arsenault on these playlists, because Son Canciones will reissue her album and put out the first single. Her work has not been available on Spotify before (which might have been a very good move, I’m not complaining). Some other big singles for me came from NQ Arbuckle, Kyle Cox, MAITA, Jason Isbel and the 400 Unit, Adeline Hotel, Jenny O, VanWyck, Sylvia Rose Novak, A.O.Gerber, Shane Leonard, Robin Bacior… as usual I might just as well mention them all.
