OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #73

Another week, another weekly playlist.

There was so much albums this week especially in the americana circle that it was impossible to listen to all of them in time for this. So some good ones might well be missing from this one. However, I did listen quite a lot and here’s what caught my ear.

The highlight of the week is the new John Moreland album. Maybe a bit of a curve ball, but just let it spin a while and eventually it will hit you in the heart. That’s just a small part of it all and the week gave us new albums from Stripmall Ballads, Christopher Paul Stelling, Miss Tess, Isobel Campbell, Dropkick, Nada Surf, Arbor Labor Union, David Allen, Aubrie Sellers, Frazey Ford, John Blek, Chicago Farmer and Spanish Love Songs. There’s also some great EPs from Khruangbin & Leon Bridges, Babehoven, Corinne Sharlet and Ian Ferguson. The Haden Triplets album is a couple of weeks old, but I missed it when it came out.

The Finnish section only contains a revisit to the Muuan Mies album and a single from the latest Soit Se Silti signing Rohkeat kuvat. I’m sure there had to be more interesting stuff.

Plenty of great international singles like Logan Ledger, Talitha Ferri, Christian Lee Hutson, Whitney Rose, Amanda Shires, Sweet Megg, Lucinda Williams…. and then there’s the usual revisit to some of my favorite albums of the previous week.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #72

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Time to get this one done today, because tomorrow I’m watching a neverending mega event were they also play some ball for 11 minutes or so. I also have a one week winter vacation now, so I might be a bit easier to reach during the next week. Lately emailing to me has like blasting words into a void and I’m deeply sorry about that. There’s just not enough time to read them all and especially reply them all. It would be difficult even if this was full time thing and this is only a dear hobby that I write on my spare time. And well after spending the eight hours at the factory, spending the next 2 reading and replying emails is often a bit too much.

This was again a pretty great release week. Tre Burt, Drive-By Truckers, Possessed by Paul James, Squirrel Flower and Frances Quinlan were on top of my list. Sorry for putting Streetlight Blues again from Squirrel Flower. There’s other wonderful songs on it too. I just kinda fell badly for this one during the week and wanted to put it close to the top this time. There’s also new albums from Brian Johannesen, Katie Blount, Son Little, Edmund Wayne, Raina Rose and Tall Tall Trees. A couple of EPs too from Emma Hill, Sophie & The Broken Things, Baseball Dad, Remington Super 60 and Zach Pack (this last one is from 2019, but I just found it a couple of weeks ago thanks to Vincent Neil Emerson).

This time the Finnish part consists of albums from PK Keränen & Muuan Mies, an EP from Sami Heikkilä and a new single from Hermaja. Plus revisiting that 2019 from Teini-Pää EP, because it’s just so damn good.

The international song of the week is obviously the new single from Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom. These lovely The Burning Hell people are releasing a duo album and this is the first single from the forthcoming album. Some other big ones for me were the new Lilly Hiatt single, the first one from new Tompkins Square signing Sam Burton, the new Dan Reeder single that sort of reminds of that fabulous Ted Lucas album that I love so much and the new Leon Russell cover from Vincent Neil Emerson. Just to name a few. All these songs are here, because I like them a lot.

And as usual revisiting some of my favorites from last week at the end just so they don’t disappear too fast from this list. Hint: there’s also an OCTA Weekly Playlist Archive at Spotify, if you miss a week. I’ll keep a couple months worth of playlists over there, but eventually they will disappear too. That’s kind of my I make this writing post each week. Anyway, that all for this week. I’ll try to make a few of those round up thingies during the week. All the best and love love love.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #71

Another week, another weekly playlist.

There’s a new Andy Shauf album. Where’s the parade? An album that’s basicly a story of one bar night set to music. Everything could go wrong with that, but nothing did because Andy is so great. Still Hello Emerson and Dakota Theim might be the biggest things for me this week, because I’ve loved Andy for years but only just got to know Hello Emerson and Dakota Theim. And there’s not a whole lot that I enjoy more than finding new artists to love. I already had a Hello Emerson song here last week, but started to dive into his music more thoroughly during this week. It started with this Seat16b music video and after that I’ve been listening to both this new record and the old record. Don’t know how I managed to miss his music until now. Totally my kind of stuff. As for Dakota Theim, I just found him on Friday thanks to American Standard Time. Even though this blog has drifted towards folk, country and americana, I’m pop kid at heart (or well pop middle-aged man) and this is such a perfect classic pop album. If I haven’t scared away all the pop fans with the current americana emphasis, check out this awesome pop record. The album came out a couple of weeks ago, but I just found it now.

Oh but there’s more. That was just a tip of record berg. There’s excellent new albums from Bart Budwig, Bonny Light Horseman, Terry Allen, Gill Landry, Good Good Blood, Pia Fraus, Bindley Hardware Co EP plus an oldies cover EP from Sam Moss. And a couple of fabulous earlier 2020 releases that I hadn’t listened before, Alexandra Savior album and a Brandon Wolfe Scott EP.

The Finnish section is rather small this time around. There’s a new absolutely wonderful single from Arppa. All three Arppa singles have been amazing. A very impressive run and long may it continue. Hopefully it will eventually lead into a full-length debut album. Also revisiting the Joni Ekman and Pintandwefall albums plus featuring Teini-Pää EP from 2019. I only heard it now and I love it so much.

As for the international singles, the big ones were the first singles from the forthcoming Caleb Caudle, Kyle Forester, Nap Eyes and Dana Gavanski albums. Joey O’Neill is a songwriter that I didn’t know before, but cdbaby recommended it if I like Jennifer Castle (and well who doesn’t). So I gave it a spin and really liked it. I’ve also really liked both singles Little Misty has released so far. Same goes for all Cassidy Waring singles and there’s a couple of new ones from The War and Treaty. Plus new cuts from the forthcoming Peter Oren and Sam Doores albums. And well a whole lot more and everything would be worthy of a namedrop on this text too. One from 2019 as well, because I stumbled upon James McCann and loved this song.

That’s it for this week’s new music round-up. Back again next Sunday for this unless I put it on hold until Monday due to Super Bowl. I try to do some other blog posts this week, but no definite promises. I hate if this turns into just a playlist, but I also struggle big time at the moment and just haven’t had the energy to do much more. Love love love.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #70

Another week, another weekly playlist.

A pretty great release week. 2020 songs and albums started rolling into the record stores. The Innocence Mission and David Dondero led the rush, but the week also gave beautiful new albums from Della Mae, A Girl Called Eddy (only 16 years after the wonderful debut), Bill Fay, Aoife Nessa Frances, Marcus King, Futurebirds, Alice Boman, Eleven Hundred Springs, Left Arm Tan, Kiwi Jr (I think this came out in Canada earlier) and Fruition. I somehow managed to miss the fact that the Beach Slang album came out a week ago, so that’s here for the first time. Plus EPs from Alan Barnosky and Caitlin Canty.

An excellent week for Finnish stuff as well. Joni Ekman and Pintandwefell released excellent albums plus there’s wonderful new singles from Joose Keskitalo, Untogethers, Muuan Mies and PK Keränen. If you are wondering why the Finnish stuff is usually somewhere in the middle of the playlist, it’s just because this list has a bunch of non-finnish speakers following and therefore I start with the international should-be hits and important album cuts.

As for international singles, there’s so many of them. And so many really important ones. Single of the week has to be Thoughts and Prayers by Drive-By Truckers. A great song with a powerful message. Other big highlight was the return of Samantha Crain with a really special song. Then there’s new singles from huge personal favorites John Moreland, Andy Shauf and Possessed by Paul James. Another brilliant one from the forthcoming Tre Burt and a really wonderful new one from Swamp Dogg. And well a whole lot more and everything would be worthy of a namedrop. This ended a bit on the longside. I probably should try to keep these in the 30-40 songs range, because even that’s quite a lot. I suppose it’s not a big issue, because everyone can listen to just as much or little they wish.

Anyway, that’s this week’s new release round up. Back next Sunday with another one of these, if you want to hear another playlist compiled by a human being instead of an algorithm. Not that I do any better job at it, but at least I try to create some kind of flow to these. All the best and love love love.
