OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #69

Finally moving on to 2020 songs. Well there’s some from December 2019 too, because I haven’t updated this for several weeks. I tried to remember a few that I enjoyed during those weeks that got buried under the eoty stuff. This is a bit rushed effort, because I didn’t have the time to do the usual groundwork last weekend. I’ll try to do a better job (or well better hobby) next weekend. Anyway, thank you for each and everyone who followed the blog in 2019 and who will remain onboard for this new year. It matters a great deal to me.

This first 2020 playlist is mostly filled with wonderful singles and there’s not a whole lot of albums. There’s a great new EP from Pickering Pick though and Charlie Whitten’s new album that came out on the 27th of December. I look forward to diving into the world of that record, because I love Charlie Whitten but just haven’t had the time to listen to it yet. As for albums, there’s also a new pop record from Just Joans and a Jani Matti Juhani album where he sings Elvis in Finnish.

On the singles front there’s plenty to love. Lilly Hiatt and Gladie are both big personal favorites and both announced new albums with a release of a gorgeous first single. The Innocence Mission released another magical single from their forthcoming album as did Bart Budwig and David Dondero from the Fluff & Gravy family. Still the song of the week is Kaukana onnesta by Laura Moisio. Frankly that’s song of the year quality and I can’t wait to hear her forthcoming album. Other Finnish entries this week are the aforementioned Jani Matti Juhani and the singles from Pintandwefall and Joni Ekman.

Everything else on this would be worth of a namedrop too, but you’ll find them from the list below.

That’s it for now. I’m not sure will there more updates during the week. I really need to catch up on sleep after a couple of weekends of EOTY lists and NFL Playoffs.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #68

Another week, another weekly playlist.

The year end is getting closer, but the hits just keep on coming. Or should-be hits at least. This week we got a new solo album from Micah Schnabel and that is a big deal. It’s a very powerful album where anger & frustration collide with hope & empathy. Super highly recommended. Also Elijah Ocean, Hurt Valley, The Country Side of Harmonica Sam and Lannie Flowers released great new albums. Then there’s the awesome Little Wings album that first came out in the summer, but I haven’t seen it before on this controversial streaming app. Yola’s album also got an extended version and Shotgun Jimmie and Rue Snider released EPs.

As for Finland. There’s the new album from Pekko Käppi along with a revisit to the wonderful Liila Jokelin album that started last week’s playlist. The new Pintandwefall single is absolutely wonderful and another single treat comes from Pietarin Spektaakkeli feat Yona.

International singles ruled the week too, because there was such treasures like a new John Moreland song, a new Jennah Barry song, a new Possessed by Paul James song and Tre Burt’s debut single on Oh Boy Records. Just to name a few. You’ll find the rest from the list below.

That’s it for this week. I may or may not do this next week. Kind of depends is there enough new stuff. Or maybe I’ll just add them on top of this one, if there’s some but not enough for a whole playlist. Mostly I try to start working on the pointless EOTY lists. First a couple of those round-up thingies during the next few days, then on to the lists. No definite promises about anything though. Love love love.

1. Micah Schnabel – Gentle Always (The Teenage Years of the 21st of Century, Here You Go! 2019)
2. Elijah Ocean – Came Down From Denver (Back to the Lander, New Wheel Music, 2019)

4. Hurt Valley – Bothers (Glacial Place, Woodsist, 2019)
5. Little Wings – Cliff’s Face (People, Digsquad, 2019)
6. John Moreland – Harder Dreams (single, Old Omens, 2019)
7. Jennah Barry – Pink Grey Blue (single, Forward Music, 2019)

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #67

Another week, another weekly playlist

Not a whole lot of releases this week due to thanksgiving I guess. First I thought about not doing the playlist this week, but in the end I didn’t have the heart to skip it, because there was a really important Finnish album release from Liila Jokelin. I’ve been wanting to hear her record since I saw her singing one song as an encore after a Kuparilinna concert some years ago. So that was the big one for me this week. Other Finnish selections are the latest singles from M, Mitä Helvettiä Nyt Taas and Räjäyttäjät.

A couple of international thingies too. There’s a new album from Sam Miller, The Finks (a bit of a mixed bag with covers and own songs) and Os Noctambulos plus EPs from Christopher Gold, Ducks Unlimited and Scott & Charlene’s Wedding. I’m sure that can’t be all, but those ended up on my radar. I also included some older albums that I’ve missed from Trey Burnart Hall, Mousey, Ruth Garbus, The Lazy Susans, Repulsive Woman and Sandro Perri.

Some great singles too from Little Misty, The Innocence Mission, Peter Oren (this one I missed before), The Remittance Men and so forth.

And as usual, revisiting some albums from previous week. Put that’s it for this week. Probably some round up posts next week and after that is time to move on to the EOTY lists. No definite promises about anything though. Love love love.

5. The Innocence Mission – This Boat (single, Bella Union, 2019)

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #66

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Last week this little thing reached 200 followers. At least temporarily. Which is nice. Of course all kinds of numbers are just vanity meters, but it still important to know that someone seems to be interested and I’m not just blasting songs into the void.

The year is approaching its end, but there’s still plenty of great music to come, so hold on to your aoty lists. There’s a new Micah Schnabel album still on the horizon for example. We got some good candidates for those lists this week as well. The biggest one for me is the new Twain album. I’m a huge fan and love this new album. Of course I kind of knew that even before pushing the play button. There’s much more thought and we got new albums from Gabriel Birnbaum, Benjamin Tod, Heather Valley, Maija Sofia, Leonard Cohen, James Matthew VII, Scott H. Biram, Emily Barker (compilation of rare cuts), Dan Edmonds plus the Women Sing Waits tribute album. Also a couple of Field Report EPs with new versions

From Finland there’s singles from J.Matkala, Joni Ekman and Tams plus album cuts from Pienet Koirat and Baby Sweetcorn (revisiting this one because it’s so good). Tams and Pienet Koirat should have been here a week ago, but better late than never and all the other cliches.

The big new singles for me were the ones from Drive-By Truckers and Daniel Markham. Obviously everything else would be worth namedropping too. There’s a treat like Andrew Bryant’s version of True Love Will Find You In The End as the last track on this.

That’s it for this week. Back again next week with another weekly playlist. I might do some quick video/songs posts before that, but no promises whatsoever. Love love love.

1. Twain – Longing (Adventure, Keeled Scales, 2019)
2. Gabriel Birnbaum – Archives (Not Alone, Arrowhawk Records, 2019)
