OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #107

Another week, another new music weekly.

Sorry for being slightly behind schedule. I didn’t have the time or energy to start working on this before today. I probably missed a ton this week as well, but here are the new releases that caught my ear.

The big album releases of the week came from Luka Kuplowsky, Bonnie Whitmore and Drive-By Truckers. I’ve only browsed through them at this point, but I’m loving everything I’ve heard so far. And I’m a big fan of all three, so I know that I will continue to love them after more thorough listening. Other beautiful album releases this week came from Brent Cobb, Hayley Thompson-King, Fruit Bats (covers and such, love that Ted Lucas song that’s on this playlist), Dawn Landes, Jacob Faurholt, Field Medic, Mr. Husband, Dawes, The Nude Party, Laura Jane Grace, Joachim Cooder, Greg Pope, Wilding and John Lee Shannon. Also cool EPs from Girlatones, Brack Cantrell and Smug Brothers. OH yeah and that Night Shop EP from a week ago. I raved the singles and then failed to mention the release of the EP. Shame on me.

From Finland the big deal is the solo debut album from Sam Shingler. He has been releasing great pop music for 20+ years with The Pansies, Montevideo, The Lieblings etc and the quality remains equally high on the solo effort. There’s also excellent new album from M. I’m sure there had to be more as well.

As for international singles, the big one is the Amanda Shires feat Jason Isbell one. Also Floating Room, Becky Warren, Esther Rose, Caitlin Canty, Jennifer Castle, Adrianne Lenker, Sloan released wonderful new songs. Just to name a few. You’ll find them all from the list below.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #106

Another week, another music weekly.

The usual round up of my favorite new music is here again and as usual, there’s plenty to love. So far I’ve spent most time with the new Flora Hibberd EP and it’s rather remarkable. Don’t sleep on it. Big album release of the week was the new Lydia Loveless record. Michael C. Duguay, Bella White, The War and Treaty were also high on my albums list. That Maxwell Stern album might actually turn out to be my favorite of the week in the end. It came a bit out of the blue for me, but damn I started listening a couple of hours ago and instead of finishing this list I just want to listen to it over and over again. It’s early, but I think I’m going to love that record a lot. I also dig the Gladie and Jake Tittle EPs a lot. That Gladie EP also features a cover of Plea from a Cat Named Virtute by The Weakerthans and doesn’t everybody love that song. Oh yeah and of course we got new albums from Sufjan Stevens and Fleet Foxes too. Here’s a ful list of albums and EPs that were on my radar and can be found from the playlist too.

Maxwell Stern – Impossible Sum (Lauren Records)
Lydia Loveless – Daughter (Honey, You’re Gonna Be Late)
Flora Hibberd – Archipelago EP
Michael C. Duguay – The Winter Of Our Discotheque (So Sorry Records, 2020)
Jordan Tice – Motivational Speakeasy
Bella White – Just Like Leaving
The War and Treaty – Hearts Town (Rounder Records)
Yves Jarvis – Sundry Rock Song Stock (ANTI)
Jake Tittle – Pulling Off the Label EP (Anxiety Blanket Records)
Gladie – Thank You Card EP
Bob Mould – Blue Hearts (Merge Records)
Thomas Csorba – Thomas Csorba (Tone Tree)
Blitzen Trapper – Holy Smokes Future Jokes (Yep Roc)
Ric Robertson – Strange World EP (Free Dirt Records)
Orgone – Connection (3 Palm Records)
The Yearning feat Luci Ashbourne – Only When I’m Dancing (Elefant Records)
Mike McClure – Looking Up (Crow and Gazelle)
Our Man in the Field – The Company of Strangers (Rootsy Music)
Diana DeMuth – Misadventure (Creaky Gate Records)
Tim Heidecker – Fear of Death (Spacebomb Records)
Sufjan Stevens – The Ascension (Asthmatic Kitty Records)
Fleet Foxes – Shore (ANTI, 2020)

And then the home shore highlights. There’s new album releases from Rohkeat kuvat and Juha Mäki-Patola plus an EP from White Jackets. Kynnet, Antero Kaksikäsi and Icons of Elegance dropped new singles.

And last but not least, the international singles of the week. All long time readers probably know that The Posies is my all-time favorite band and Amazing Disgrace my all-time favorite record. So it’s quite nice that there’s a new The Posies song in the world and it’s mighty good too. Some classic Jon Auer there for you to love and enjoy. Still the song you need to hear even more is the new powerful Tre Burt single. Also great to have a new song song from Widower. Back in 2013 they wrote my song of that particular year and it’s good to have them back. Jocelyn Mackenzie is a new artist for me (thanks to Guy Capecelatro III for bringing her music to my attention) and I really loved her new single. Check out the lovely music video too. Also very fond of new songs by Rachel Brooke, Gus Clark, Gianna Lauren, Melissa Mary Ahern, Sam Burton, Jacksonport, Chloe Alison Escott, Skyway Man, Chris Stapleton and well all of them really so let’s stop the silly namedropping.

That’s it for this week. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #105

Another week, another music weekly.

The blog is now 19 years old and still going strong. Or somehow scraping by. You tell me. Still here anyway and here’s another weekly round up of the finest new music. Quite a release week too. I feel like I’ve spent most of my Saturday listening to the new stuff and it feels like I still continuously find more releases. This is actually 65 songs long and I still cut out some bigger indie singles. Like the new Lambchop single, which I liked but would have added another 13 minutes to this playlist which is already longer than anyone is going to listen. I need some intervention before these start to be 100 songs long. I suppose it’s not a huge deal, because everyone can listen as much as they want.

The list starts with the surprise album release by Tyler Childers. Important message and a powerful song. Long time favorites Otis Gibbs and Daniel Romano put out great records. Brennen Leigh’s album is now out and I’m loving it. Also fond of the Emma Kupa, Ian Wayne, Victoria Bailey and Fenne Lily albums. Terry’s Paradise has a wonderful new EP too. And yeah all the others rule as well. Here are all the international albums that were on my radar this week.

Tyler Childers – Long Violent History (Hickman Holler Records / RCA Records)
Otis Gibbs – Hoosier National
Brennen Leigh – Prairie Love Letter
Victoria Bailey – Jesus, Red Wine & Patsy Cline (Rock Ridge Music)
Daniel Romano – How Ill Thy World Is Ordered (You’ve Changed Records)
Terry’s Paradise – Shoobeedoo High, Shoobeedoo Low, Pt 2 EP

Ian Wayne – Risking Illness (Whatever’s Clever)
Fenne Lily – BREACH (Dead Oceans)
Kilo Bravo – Chew This Slow)
The Apartments – In and Out of the Light (Talitres)
Native Harrow – Closeness (Loose Music)
European Sun – European Sun (WIAIWYA)
John Davey – Toss Your Javelin
A.O. Gerber – Another Other Place EP (Hand in Hive)
Black Sea Dahu – Kingdom North EP (2014/2020) – rerelease
Photo Ops – Pure at Heart (Western Vinyl)
The Persian Leaps – Smiling Lessons
Shabason, Krgovich & Harris – Philadelphia (Idee Fixe Records)
Decoration Day – Makeshift Future
Honey Magpie – Midnight Morning
Dig Nitty – Reverse of Mastery (Exploding in Sound Records)
Stephie James – These Days EP
Gillian Welch – Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs Vol2 (Acony Records)
Robyn Ludwick – Lake Charles
Grace Turner – Half Truths EP – this one came out in August, but I just found it

And then over to Finland. There’s a new Mummypowder single. This is a big deal. One of my favorite bands. There’s also some beautiful rerelease stuff from Marian Valinta (EP) and Ethel Suspense (album). Long time readers might remember them from onechord.net 1.0 version. I still like them just as much as I did back then. Other Finnish beauties this week are album from Linkopii, EPs from PÄÄ KII and The Phonochromes plus singles from Sam Shingler, Radio Supernova, Eerie Deer and Juha Mäki-Patola. Also revisiting last week’s pearls Rosita Luu and Lätsä.

My favorite international single of the week is the new quietly monumental Austin Lucas single The Times. The big album announcement was the new Jennifer Castle album that came with the lead single Justice. Aaron Frazer, the drummer extraordinaire and co-vocalist of the Durand Jones & The Indications also announced a new album with a gorgeous debut single. I also love the new songs by Flora Hibberd, VanWyck, I’m Kingfisher, Tomberlin, K.S. Rhoads and Pearl Charles. Just to name a few. They are all good and you can find them from the list below.
