OCTA 18th Anniversary – The New Magnetic North

Next we are heading back to the Finnish shores to hear some of finest Finnish folk rock and alternative country. The core group of The New Magnetic North used to have a band called Skip Zone, so they have been delivering great songs for several years. The excellent debut album of this new band saw the light of the day just a while ago on the 1st of August and it can be found by hitting that bandcamp link below the video. Their beautiful acoustic live song for this 18 year anniversary bash is a new one and it carries the same name as the band.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – Christopher Gold

Next this celebration takes us to Wisconsin, United States. One of my favorite things during the past year has been following Christopher Gold’s 27 songs project. His band Christopher Gold & The New Old Things released a brand new song every two weeks for over a year and somehow managed to keep the level of the songs really high throughout the whole project. These songs now form 3 full-length albums and you’ll find all of them from his bandcamp page. His song for this event is a new song called They Built This Prison. Watch it below and be on the lookout for a more rockin’ encore later during this anniversary week.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – Katie Spencer

Even though this is partly a celebration of the long road of this blog, I wanted to invite my recent favorites too. One of my favorite 2019 albums has been Weather Beaten from Katie Spencer. She is an excellent folk songwriter and guitarist from Kingston upon Hull, UK and her beautiful and timeless songs live somewhere close to the Bert Jansch and John Martyn territories. Katie Spencer’s magnificent festival song is called Shannon Road. Her voice and guitar playing are so mesmerizing that it took me even a moment to notice that the video also features a really lovely cat. What a great performance from them both. If you want to investigate further, you can hear/buy her 2019 album Weather Beaten on her Bandcamp page.

OCTA 18th Anniversary – verões

The music of verões aka Helsinki-based musician Petri Nakari is a perfect fit to this festival, because he is making wonderful cover versions of Finnish indie songs from the early 00s. The originals were a big part of the early days of this music blog and I love listening to his beautifully reimagined versions of these songs that are blissfully stuck in my heart. The festival number for verões is called Fire On the Streets. It was written by ultrasport and their original appeared on their 2005 album Nothing Can Go Wrong. The studio version of this cover by verões can be found from the new self-titled album that is available on Bandcamp.
