Another week, another weekly playlist

First a small announcement that the regular visitors probably have noticed at this point. This blog hits 18 years this September, which is a pretty damn long time to absolutely anything let alone a music blog. I’m setting up an online festival to celebrate this long road. Hit that OCTA18 link there at the top (or well this link) for more information. I need your help to make this happen, so if you have been featured on this blog sometime during the past 18 years, I would love to have you participating on this event. All the info should be on that link, but feel free to ask absolutely anything related to the event (email, social media whatever works for you):

And the actual thing aka the new music from this week. The big album release for me is the new Joe Pug album. Other new albums on the list are from The Flaming Lips, Oscar Lush, Rod Picott, The Weary Times, Darren Hayman and last minute addition Lachlan Denton & Studio Magic. Armstrong and Smug Brothers came out earlier in July, but I managed to miss them at the time. There’s also a song from the wonderful new EPs by Drew Danburry, Goodnight, Texas, Angharad Drake. Leland Sundries is the one I missed before in this category.

The single that every is talking (and rightfully so) is the debut single from The Highwomen. There’s so much more though. Long time faves John Calvin Abney, Joan Shelley, Hiss Golden Messenger and Wilco released their new singles. New(er) favorites like Leslie Stevens, Jordan Moser, Wojtek The Bear also hit a homerun. Just to name a few.

That’s it for this week. Five more work days until vacation part 2. I again try to catch up on this blog stuff too during that (but I will rest too). I indeed have some catching up to do, because I’ve lost the email game (at least temporarily) and have over 3000 unread emails at the moment. My apologizes. It’s just too much to keep up with it. There’s just not enough time to read and listen 100+ emails everyday when one first has to spend 8 hours at the factory. If there’s something urgent give a shout on social media (and/or put something in the subject line that makes it easier to pick the personal emails from the mass emails). I’ll go through them on the vacation, but it will take a while. Thanks for understanding. Love.

I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

Pat Reedy & The Longtime Goners Finland Tour 8.8-11.8.2019

Pat Reedy & The Longtime Goners are touring around Europe in August and September. The tour also includes four shows here in Finland (Maarianhamina, Lahti, Luvia and Helsinki). These great country bands quite rarely end up in Finland, so don’t miss these concerts. You’ll find the Finland dates below. Four Arms to Hold You, International music

Black Sea Dahu, Caroline Spence, Kacy & Clayton and Izaak Opatz

A quick video post for tonight. Last year I discovered Swiss band Black Sea Dahu thanks to my FB friend Karen and I’m becoming more addicted to their music every single day. I could listen to the live at FluxFM version of In Case I Fall For You and this new single How You Swallowed your Anger all day long. Here’s a Berlin sessions video of my favourite song in the world today. It’s an outtake from their forthcoming EP No Fire in the Sand that is due out on the 27th of September on Mouthwatering Records.

Next up is the new music video from one of my favorite albums of the year. Who’s Gonna Make My Mistakes is an outtake from Caroline Spence’s brilliant album Mint Condintion that is out now on Rounder Records. Here’s some sweet and clumsy love in form of a music video that was directed by Steve Voss.

There’s a new and most likely wonderful Kacy & Clayton album on the horizon. Carrying On will drop into the record stores and our hearts on the 4th of October. A couple of singles are already out and available on New West Records. Sunny Adams directed a great music video for this second single The Forty-Ninth Parallel.

And finally a small step back to Mariachi Static. It’s an album by Izaak Opatz that originally came out in 2017 and then Mama Bird Recording Co reissued it in the summer of 2018. However, it’s definitely worthy of a revisit any day just because it’s so damn good. This time there’s an additional reason. Michael T. Workman directed a fabulous new music video for album cut Not Yet.

Four Arms to Hold You is an ongoing feature with a weird name. It might not contain a whole lot of words, but it does contain a whole lot of love towards the featured songs. Basicly this is just four albums / songs / artists that have done their part in holding me together and therefore I want to tell the world or the seven readers of this blog how much I love them. Not entirely sure do these kind of posts serve any kind of purpose and I do hope I manage to write longer posts too. Right now it just feels like the playlists and these kind of short posts are the only way to keep this dear hobby alive. Plus it’s really the music that matters, not my random ramblings and these posts will always contain magical music.

One Chord to Another – 18th Anniversary Festival

One Chord to Another hits 18 years on the 17th of September. It’s a pretty long time to do absolutely anything let alone a music blog. Therefore I thought I should do something to celebrate the crazy fact that I’ve been doing this almost my whole adult life. It might not have been a wise career move to spend 18 years and hundreds and hundreds of hours in something that has only made me lose money, but still I feel that my life is much richer thanks to onechordnet and I’m proud that I’ve managed to keep this thing alive for so long. I’m a shy and quiet man and this has kind of been my voice in this world.

That’s why it’s time for an anniversary festival. OCTA18 will be an online festival in the spirit of the legendary Couch by Couchwest Festival (CXCW). The goal is to get unique live videos from the artists that have shaped the 18 years of onechordnet. It’s not open for everyone due to the reasons that a) the idea is to celebrate the 18 years of the blog, so naturally it makes sense to include only people who have been featured here b) I’m just one man and at this point it’s impossible to know would there be 5 or 500 videos if its open and I have a limited amount of time to spend on this. However, if you’ve been featured on the blog during its existence, I would love to have you on the event (maybe still more than just one playlist inclusion for example, just ask if you have any doubts, I try to invite and ask some myself too but it’s not always easy for a man who has a masters degree in self-doubt). I would love to get submissions from all the eras of the blog, because both the early Finnish pop days and the current americana emphasis are important parts of the history of this little music blog. Obviously a lot of the early favorites have stopped making music ages ago, so that might get a bit tricky.

If you want to participate, here are the basic instructions:

1. Shoot a live video of one song. Bonus points if it’s a song that I’ve praised here over the years, but really you can just choose the one you want (so can be a new song too or a song that I’ve never mentioned on the blog). It can be just a quick phone video or you can use as much time, equipment and creativity as you wish. There does not have to be any birthday wishes or so, but it does need to be made for this event. So keep it hidden or at least do not share it on your social media before I’ve posted it during the anniversary week. Afterwards you can of course do what you want with it.

2. Upload it to youtube/vimeo and tag it OCTA18. Send the link to submissions(at)onechord.net. Don’t use the other addresses on the contact page, because they might get lost in the crowd in the other inboxes (I get a hundred or so emails every day). Also don’t use this one for the other promo emails. Just this anniversary festival stuff on this email address.

3. That’s basicly it. I will then post it to the blog during the anniversary week. I’ll tag you so you know when it’s live.

4. Submission deadline is 31st of August, because I’m indeed just one man with a dayjob and I’ll need some time to write the posts beforehand. It’s not absolutely set in stone, so ask if you would love to do it, but you are not able to do it before that date. I just need to get most of them in advance. Otherwise I will be in big trouble, if I get lots of videos.
