The Weather Station, Michael Feuerstack & Community Theatre

weat

Sometimes it feels like that perhaps this should be called Canadian pop site and not a Finnish pop site, because these days a huge amount of my favourite bands are Canadian. We are stuck in Canada once again, because great things keep on happening on a daily basis.

Today one of my favourite labels You’ve Changed Records announced that they will release a new The Weather Station EP in October. What Am I Going To Do With Everything I Know is a limited edition 6 song 45 RPM 12″ EP (also digital). I’m really looking forward to this one, because her earlier releases All Of It Was Mine and the Duets series are both so amazing. The wonderful title track is the first outtake from the forthcoming EP. You can pre-order the vinyl from the You’ve Changed Website or the digital from their Bandcamp.

Michael Feuerstack’s album Tambourine Death Bed was one of the highlights of 2013. Scorekeeper was the final song on that great album and yesterday Michael released a lovely wall ball music video for the song. A good way to keep that album in our minds (sometimes..especially for these clueless bloggers like yours truly.. the life span of a record seem to be something like a couple of weeks and that’s just silly and ridiculous). This one below is Scorekeeper from Tambourine Death Bed that came out on Forward Music Group last year. Michael also has a 2014 release called Singer Songer.

And last but not least. Yesterday I saw this Exclaim article about Community Theatre and I’m really excited about this one. I had not heard about this until I saw that article, but there’s indeed a collaboration album coming from some of my biggest Canadian heroes. Community Theatre will include Mathias Kom (the Burning Hell), Kyle Cashen (Old Time Machine), Chris Adeney (Wax Mannequin), Michael Feuerstack (formerly known as Snailhouse), Steve Lambke (Baby Eagle), Ian Kehoe (Marine Dreams), Jim Kilpatrick (Shotgun Jimmie), Richard Laviolette, and Colleen Collins and David Trenaman (Construction & Destruction). That’s almost a dream-like line-up and I can’t wait to hear the album when it arrives.

Bahamas – Bahamas is Afie

afie

Finnish-Canadian Afie Jurvanen aka Bahamas just released a new album a couple of weeks ago. This new one is called Bahamas is Afie and just like everything he has released before, it sounds magnificent to me. The man has the sweetest voice and is so good at creating songs that might seem small, but still make a huge lasting impression. I’m especially loving the beginning of the new album. Can’t Take You With Me and Bitter Memories are both pure gold and despite the subjects both feel as lovely as Maru and Hana videos on the internet. I hope someone convinces Toronto-based Afie to tour in his mother’s homeland sometime soon. His Europe tour ends in Stockholm, Sweden this fall which is criminally close. This is Stronger Than That from the new Bahamas album that is out now on Brushfire Records.

One Chord to Another Playlist Volume 3

I did a couple of these playlists during the spring and then I just forgot the whole thing. Maybe it’s time do a few more. This one has another approach though and these are mostly new songs. Turner Cody might be 2013, others are 2014 I think. It’s not supposed be best of 2014 or anything. These are just some songs that I’ve loved during the past few weeks and months. 20 songs and over an hour of music. It starts with the latest outtake from the forthcoming Frontier Ruckus album and ends with Strand of Oaks‘ stunning Jason Molina tribute JM. Flannelmouth, Lac Belot, Ochre Room and Nopat are the Finnish bands/artists on it.

Julie Arsenault & Callan Furlong

julie

I don’t know much about Julie Arsenault, but somehow I found her Bandcamp page a few months ago. I seem to find myself returning to that page quite often and tonight that happened once again. Her album The Creature That I Call Myself is something rather amazing and it sounds so incredibly lovely. I’m especially addicted to the opening song called Bad Words, which you can hear below. Listen to / buy the whole beautiful album at Bandcamp.

And music video for the song The Things I Do.

I also found a fairly new Callan Furlong video from Julie Arsenault’s Facebook. I can’t remember did I ever wrote about Callan Furlong’s The Fool I Was Before EP, but at least I should have because I have a digital copy and I really enjoyed listening to his lovely old-fashioned songs sometime last year. Very highly recommended if you are into those first Pete Molinari releases for example. Anyway, here’s the new video Don’t Get Cute. Directed by Tisha Myles and Jack Phelps. The EP is available on his Bandcamp and it’s a name-your-price deal.
