Video Premiere: Anthony Atkinson & The Running Mates – Calm & Collected

anthony

Australian Anthony Atkinson & The Running Mates are about to release a new album Broken Folks on October 17th and I’m honored to premiere their brand new music video for the song Calm & Collected. Anthony Atkinson is a big favourite of mine and we go way back. Well actually I’ve never met the guy, but I’ve spent hours and hours listening to the magnificent songs this lovely gentleman has written. The whole Candle Records scene was something that I held very dear in the early-00s and mid-00s (and still do). The Lucksmiths, Darren Hanlon and Anthony Atkinson kept on releasing amazing albums one after another back then. Anthony’s solo records Come Home For Autumn and Loyalty Songs were/are fabulous and the latter one even found its way to my top 3 on the albums of the year 2006 list.

But enough with all this nostalgia. It’s time to move back to 2014, because Anthony Atkinson is relevant right now and is about to release a wonderful new album. The Lost and Lonesome Recording Co are carrying the torch..or candle now and they are constantly releasing the finest Australian indie pop albums. They’ve already released fabulous albums from my old favourite The Zebras and new favourite The Icypoles earlier in the year and next Friday the new album by Anthony Atkinson & The Running Mates will hit the record stores and our hearts. I’ve had the chance to listen to the new album for a day or so. Some might say that it’s too early to make final conclusions, but I think Anthony and co have already won my heart over. It’s been eight years since Loyalty Songs came out, but Anthony hasn’t lost his perfect melodic sense and he definitely still has that ability to write amazing folk-tinged pop songs. Calm & Collected is a great outtake from the upcoming album and you can watch the new music video for the song below (camera and editing by Ben Mason). The album Broken Folks will come out on The Lost and Lonesome Recording Co on 17th of October.

Matt Paxton, Wes Tirey & J.E. Sunde

paxtoni

I’ve been following Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Paxton after I bought his 2011 release How the Land Lies and fell in love with it. Ok, this happened something like 8-9 months ago, so our relationship is fairly new, but I really love that record, I still have it on the iPod and listen to quite often. The new Matt Paxton release Mountain Eyes EP came out on Other Songs Music Co. on the 23rd of September. This one is really bare and intimate. Acoustic guitar and a four-track recorder. You don’t need much more that that if you are able to write beautiful and captivating folk songs. Matt is definitely able to do that. This one is Hummingbird from Mountain Eyes.

These days I’m slow with the updates and all the news are already old news when I actually write about them. But let’s make an exception this time around. Wes Tirey’s new release O, Annihilator came out today on Full Spectrum Records and I just bought a digital copy half an hour ago. Therefore I haven’t spend much time with it yet, but it certainly sounds like a magnificent follow-up to last year’s amazing I Stood Among The Trees EP. It’s very bare and lo-fi, but highly addictive. This one is Blue Ridge Mountains Blues from O, Annihilator.

And last but not least, something from J.E. Sunde’s solo album Shapes that Kiss The Lips of God. I’ve written about his a few times, but I feel like I should end every blog post with a song from this album. I just got a word from the local record store that my physical copy has arrived to the record store. So maybe that’s a good reason to post A Blinding Flash of Light once again. Such a great song, such a great record.

Video of the Day #152: Freschard

freschard

A new Freschard music video surfaced yesterday. The song is Investigate from her fabulous album Boom Biddy Boom. If you are dedicated follower of onechord.net (not sure if there are any), you’ve heard this song here before. I’ve had huge Freschard crush going on since spring and I still love her records Boom Biddy Boom and Shh.. I haven’t gone further back in her discography yet, but I probably eventually will. This is Investigate.
