Lydia Loveless, Nikki Lane & Jessica Lea Mayfield

It’s rather criminal that I haven’t mentioned this one yet. At least I think I haven’t. Anyway, the new Lydia Loveless album Somewhere Else has been in heavy rotation for several months and it’s one of my favourite 2014 albums. Bloodshot Records released it in February 2014. Sometimes I feel like they could have gotten even more out of these fabulous songs, but what the hell am I complaining. Somewhere Else is a great album full of excellent countrified rock songs. This is Really Wanna See You.

This album is one of my current obsessions. I just found this a few days ago, but I’ve been spinning it a lot since. I don’t even have a physical copy yet, but I asked the local record store to order me a copy the same day I heard this. Nikki Lane is a new New West Records recruit and her new Dan Auerbach-produced album All Or Nothin’ came out in early may 2014. At first I thought it should have even a bit more classic country on it, but Nikki Lane didn’t need much time to win my heart over. Such a magnificent record. This is Good Man from Nikki Lane’s new album All Or Nothin’.

I’ve been Jessica Lea Mayfield fan since the debut album, but I wasn’t entirely convinced when I heard the first outtake Oblivious from her new album Make My Head Sing a few months ago. It was a little too damn loud for my personal preference. I finally gave the album a spin on my way home from work today and actually liked it quite a lot. Some of the songs definitely leave my comfort zone, but I suppose that can be seen as a good thing as well. This one is called I Wanna Love You. It reminds me a lot of Don’t Fear The Reaper, but also my all-time favourite band stole bits from that song (twice). So I don’t mind at all.

The Delines, The Redlands Palomino Company & Skip Zone

Maybe I start writing this blog again. Well actually I begun yesterday with that Nat Johnson song/video and I’ll continue tonight with these beautiful songs. All of these are current favourites of mine and I think these fit rather nicely under the same post.

thedelines

Colfax Avenue by The Delines is probably my favourite album right now. Of course that changes fairly often, but damn this is good. Of course I pretty much knew that before even listening. The songwriter is Willy Vlautin after all and he can’t do much wrong in my books. Actually, if I think about it, I didn’t like the previous Richmond Fontaine album as much I had expected. But this is good, really good. Mr. Vlautin has written bunch of great songs and Amy Boone sings them perfectly. That Randy Newman cover Sandman’s Coming is kind of pointless if you ask me, but all the original The Delines material is gorgeous. This is I Won’t Slip Up.

The Redlands Palomino Company came to my attention back in 2007 when I bought their previous album Take Me Home. They took their time to make the follow-up, but it recently came out on Clubhouse Records. I’ve only listened to it two times so far, but I’m really enjoying it. So my kind of music. The Redlands Palomino is still one of UK’s finest americana bands. This is the first single In These Lines.

Moving on to Finland. One of Finland’s finest americana bands Skip Zone is working on their second full-length album. A few weeks ago they released the first single called The Road and the River from that forthcoming album. This great song is a perfect way to end this little blog post.

Video of the Day #148: Nat Johnson

natdog

The day job has been brutal and lately it has taken all the energy I’ve had. Several 10-12 hour work days during the past few weeks. But I did pay the domain bill for another year, so I hope you still check this out every now and then. Your laziest and lousiest blogger still writes occasionally. I hope things get a little easier now and I can actually think about doing something else than just somehow battling through each day. There’s so many things I’d love to share.

Nat Johnson’s new song and new music video Dog is definitely one of them. So let’s start with this adorable little song. The combination of the video and the song is just perfect. It makes me happy. Kind of like it makes me happy to see my cat greet me at the door after a long work shift. Dog is an outtake from Nat’s forthcoming album Neighbour of the Year. You can buy the single from Bandcamp.

Flavour of the Month 25.4: Nicolas Kivilinna & Toni Hautamäki ja Ydinrauha

130529 Leino

Flavour of the Month takes place this friday at Pikku-Torre, Turku. Nicolas Kivilinna & Toni Hautamäki ja Ydinrauha are the artists of the evening. Read all about if below, if you can handle the beautiful Finnish language.

That is actually Toni Hautamäki with Mot Mot. I haven’t heard Toni Hautamäki ja Ydinrauha yet. But I will on friday.

FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH esittää:
Nicolas Kivilinna
Toni Hautamäki & Ydinrauha
+ Flavour of the Month DJ team
pe 25.4. klo 21-03
Pikku-Torre, Yliopistonkatu 30, Turku
vapaa pääsy!

Debyyttialbumiaan valmisteleva 21-vuotias Nicolas Kivilinna on jo ehtinyt herättää huomiota ja haltioitunuttakin innostusta Tampereen ja Suomen laulaja-lauluntekijäpiireissä ja alakulttuuriporukoissa rohkeilla tempauksillaan, kuten kirjoittamalla pokkana EP:llisen uusia lauluja Eino Leinon teksteihin, versioimalla tuoreeltaan J. Karjalaisen Mennyt mies -hitin ja kääntämällä suomeksi vanhoja amerikkalaisia folkkappaleita sekä Beatlesiä. Monipuolinen ja lahjakas musiikintekijä on jo ehtinyt keikkaillakin melko tiiviisti, joten Flavourissa on odotettavissa mielenkiintoista ja vaikuttavaa kuultavaa jostakin folkin, punkin, suomirockin ja vanhan Love Records-kaman välimaastosta.

Folkista ja suomirockista ammentaa myös mm. kuvataiteilijana ja ainakin Since November- ja A Spokane-yhtyeistä tiedetty Toni Hautamäki. Kovana Neil Young-diggarina tunnettu mies on uuden suomenkielisen Ydinrauha-bändinsä kanssa ryhtynyt sekoittelemaan melankolisia, jopa iskelmällisiä ainesosia taikinansa folkrockjuureen.

Soittoajat (noin):
Hautamäki: 23:00
Nicolas Kivilinna: 23:45
