Wes Tirey – I Stood Among Trees

westirey

This has been on my playlist for some weeks and deserves a lot of love. Wes Tirey is a great folk singer-songwriter and I Stood Among Trees is a marvellous little record. Kind of bare, but still very powerful and it really demands your attention right from the start and doesn’t let go before the last note. A really talented songwriter and storyteller. You can hear the whole striking EP on his bandcamp. You’ll find the opener The Evening Tide below. I also highly recommend these amazing videos, The Time Leaves So Soon and Master Master.

Pienet ongelmat – Lyhytsoitto I

pienetongelmat

It looks like I need to stop waiting for that Puskii! album, because that release might never see the light of the day. Thankfully Sami has a new band called Pienet ongelmat and I’m thoroughly enjoying this one as well. First release, Lyhytsoitto I, is now available on their soundcloud and you can download it for free. This is the opener, Sataman tytöt.

Video of the Day #124: The High Learys

highlearys

Hurricane Fighter Plane was a great young Australian band that I shortly featured on this blog a couple of times. It was sad to hear that they called it a day late last year, but there’s no need to dwell on sadness. Two Hurricane Fighter Plane members Jamie Turner and Matt Williams soon formed a new band called The High Learys and this band is equally brilliant. I’ve been following them on FB from the start, but I don’t think I’ve written about them before. There’s plenty of good reasons to finally do that now. 1) Their debut album Here Come The High Learys recently came out on the excellent Soundflat Records 2) The new video for the song Let You Down surfaced a few days ago 3) The record and the video are both pretty damn good and The High Learys do this 60s garage/R&B/beat thing extremely well.

You can listen to the whole album at bandcamp and here’s that new video Let You Down. Directed by Neil McArther.

Video of the Day #123: Strawberry Heritage

strawberryheritage

Today I found something new to love and it’s called Strawberry Heritage. I was just totally into this about 15 seconds after I started watching and listening to this video of a new Strawberry Heritage song Grow Back New. It’s an outtake from their upcoming album New Rise, due out in june 2013. If the rest of the album matches the level of Grow Back New and the other already available song Work Harder, New Rise is going to be brilliant. Maybe it could even come to the level of the new Frontier Ruckus record Eternity of Dimming, which so far is my favourite record of the year. I brought that up, because there is a connection (and this was another opportunity to tell people about the greatness of the new Frontier Ruckus album). If I’m not mistaken John Hanson has directed videos for them and played bass on their tour line-up. It’s always great to find a new artist that I find amazing and then notice that he is friends with other artists I love like Frontier Ruckus, Small Houses, Nathan K etc. Anyway, the connections are nice, but what’s more important is that John Hanson is a really talented folk songwriter. And those harmonies on some of the songs. Oh my. Pure bliss for a pop fan like yours truly. This is Grow Back New.
