Barna Howard – Barna Howard

Stunning! Magnificent! Wonderful! Excessive praising mode is once again totally on. I’m just listening to something that is out of this world. A huge thank you to Common Folk Music for introducing Portland-based folk musician Barna Howard to me. Traditional folk in the vein of Bert Jansch, Bob Dylan.. Beautiful singing and fantastic songwriting. The album came out on vinyl (and digital) in february on Mama Bird Recording Co. I’m going to order the vinyl today. Check out Promise, I Won’t Laugh and that awesome video that contains three songs below and/or stream the album on Spotify.

Video of the Day #90: Young Hines

Young Hines is the first artist Brendan Benson signed to his own label, Readymade Records. That already convinced me that I needed to listen to Young Hines, because I’m a huge fan of Brendan Benson. Young Hines comes from Nashville and Readymade will release his debut album Give Me My Change on april 10th. The first single from the upcoming album is Rainy Day. The video isn’t anything that spectacular, but it is the music that really counts and Rainy Day is a fabulous pop song. I’m really looking forward to hearing the full album in april.

Paperfangs – AAVVAV

The big news of the day was that Soliti signed a new band, Paperfangs. Which is nice and Paperfangs is an excellent addition to the label’s roster. Dreamy, electronic and beautiful indie pop. Paperfangs just self-released their EP AAVVAV last week digitally (limited edition cassette will follow on 26th of march). You can find the EP from their bandcamp. This one below is a song entitled Lifelong. Definitely my own favourite from the EP. That simple chorus is stuck in my head.

Pickering Pick – Prayer Flag

Pickering Pick released a new album Prayer Flag on 28th of february and it is once again eternally beautiful. During the last two months I’ve spend an awful lot of time with Pickering Pick, because I’ve been listening to his whole back catalogue and that’s one giant treasure vault. Sam Pickering Pick is just so excellent at gently breaking you into pieces and then magically combining the pieces back together in such delicate manner that you end up feeling more whole than before the listening session. Melancholy and hope gently collide and form an antidote against empty noise. Gentle guitar picking and warm singing injects thoughtfully crafted poetic lyrics into your heart. Prayer Flag is a beautiful folk album. My favourite songs at the moment are Stay By Yours and Shame. You’ll find them below. You can stream the whole album at bandcamp.
