Video of the Day #71: Radio Days (Italian power pop)

I can’t say I’m a big expert on Italian power pop. Pretty much only Cirrone comes to mind whose new album has gotten a great reception at various power pop blogs (and the sound samples do sound excellent). Anyway, last week I noticed that a band called Radio Days was following my twitter and after checking out their influence list that looked like the list of best bands in the world (Badfinger, Big Star, The Nerves, DM3, Teenage Fanclub, Cherry Twister..) I knew I have to listen to this band. I’m now streaming their latest album C’est La Vie at Rockit.it and even though I’m only halfway through I think it’s already fairly obvious that I need this album. The album came out in late 2010 if I’m not mistaken. This video outtake is called Sleep It Off.

Stream Doing Time by The Rollstons

As you may already know. The Rollstons will play their classic debut cd-r album Doing Time live at Monsters Of Pop festival (Telakka, Tampere 23.09.2011). Now you can listen to this whole album at Soundcloud. It’s a wonderful lo-fi indie album and also featured on this little 10 years & 10 reasons project I’ve been doing lately. I love the whole album, but I only added a couple of my biggest favourites below. You’ll find the rest by hitting this soundcloud link.

Power Pop #8: Frank Blake – Don’t Let Love Pass You By

Still no Scottish pop music on this section. Now that’s just wrong. Let’s leave Sparky’s Dream for the future and start with a little less known tune. There’s some usual suspects behind it though. Frank Blake was basicly Norman Blake and Francis McDonald and they recorded a few songs in the mid 90’s that appeared on the Shoeshine Chartbusters compilation (probably 7 inch single as well, I only own Alex Chilton’s Shoeshine single). Anyway, Don’t Let Love Pass You By is one of my all-time favourites. Maybe it’s not really power pop, but it’s definitely a perfect pop song in my books. I so love the lyrics and I think those words might have had a big influence on me. I listened this songs hundreds of times back in the day and those words really hit me, because I was an incredibly shy boy (and still am) and to me even saying hi to a girl was scarier than watching a Steven Seagal movie marathon. I don’t know can I thank Frank Blake for it, but in the end I did found love and I didn’t let it pass me by.

A huge thank you + dj set list

A huge thank you to everyone who came to Flavour of The Month last night. I loved every moment of it and all the performers were brilliant. And The Genuine Fakes. Oh my. What a band. The best concert I’ve seen in ages even though Pikku-Torre isn’t the best possible place for such a loud power pop band. I was the DJ and because this evening was a perfect excuse to feel a little nostalgic and play all those power pop classics, that was exactly what I did. Along with some newer favourites like Bobby Emmett and Elvyn. You’ll find the play list below. I might have forgotten a few and it’s not in any order (except that Emitt Rhodes’ Lullabye was the last song).
