Review: Kasey Anderson – Nowhere Nights

Kasey Anderson: Nowhere Nights (Red River Records, 2010)

Kasey Anderson is a singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon and his new album Nowhere Nights is pretty marvellous. I assume that Kasey was probably sitting on Bob Dylan’s imaginary couch when Steve Earle was standing on Bob Dylan’s imaginary coffee table stating that Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the world.  Especially it seems that the name Steve Earle has to be mentioned on every review. Well now I got that under way and I can focus on the songs.  Kasey Anderson is a great songwriter and a damn fine storyteller. The songs range from hard-edged and country-tinged rockers to heartbreaking and/or thoughtprovoking ballads.  I might have added one tough rocker to the latter half of the album, because the only minor problem I have with this great album is that the listening experience starts to get a little heavy towards the end if I’m not in the right mood. However, the quality never drops when the balladry kicks in and therefore this is just a case of personal preference. I’m just loving those damn brilliant rockers like All Lit Up and Nowhere Nights more than the slower material.

The Fox Hunt and 9b

This is the greatest thing right now. The Fox Hunt’s new album Long Way To Go (well along with The Fox Hunt’s debut album Nowhere Bound, I just got both of these beauties). I can’t support the activity that is fox hunt, but I sure do love this band called The Fox Hunt. These guys have a huge amount wonderful songs. Just go to their website and listen to songs like Lower Than I Should Be and Troublemakin’ Woman from the new album, then go to their myspace and listen to Crack Shot and Good Girl from the earlier album. I’m pretty sure you’ll love them too after that. More detailed The Fox Hunt praising during the upcoming weeks..

… and then little love for ninebullets.net. Actually if you don’t care about finnish music, you might as well stop reading this blog and just bookmark 9b. During the last few months, this is the place where I’ve found most of my new favorite bands/artists like The Fox Hunt, Otis Gibbs, Micah Schnabel, Kasey Anderson (who is also one of the 9b writers). I can fully recommend that website if you love bands such as Drive-By Truckers (the name is taken from Drive-By Truckers song), Drag The River and Lucero and try to find more good stuff.

MIELI:

If you are wondering what Drowsy aka Mauri Heikkinen is doing nowadays here is the answer. He changed the singing language to finnish and started a band called Mieli. The debut album is due out on Helmi-Levyt next fall. Meanwhile you can check out some demos on their myspace and go and see their (first?) live performance at Bar Kuka, Turku on 19th of march.

Oh and if you don’t know Drowsy the facts were these. He got a record deal from UK label Fat Cat Records as a young man and two aclaimed albums came out in 2005-2006. The music was often compared to things like Acid Folk, Syd Barrett, Smog etc.
