OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #127

Another week, another new music weekly.

This one is a big week, because we got new albums from Melissa Carper and Michael Feuerstack. I love these records and I can guarantee you will find them from my EOTY lists if this blog and world still exists at the end of 2021. That’s obviously not all and there’s also great new releases from Janet Simpson, Emmett Morris (EP), Sarah King (EP), Son of the Velvet Rat, Joe Pug (Only side A on streaming services), The Bones of J.R. Jones (EP), New Bums, Loretta Lynn, Nuevo, Becca Mancari (EP), Morgan Wade and The Golden Roses.

A rather excellent release week here in Finland too, because we got new albums from Litku Klemetti, Pekka Laine, Väisänen and AK-77 plus an EP from V.Härkönen. The playlist also has the new Matti single.

And last but not least the international singles. A new favorite Chris Acker released a new single as did the all-time faves Teenage Fanclub. A new find of the week for me was Cassidy Snider & The Wranglers. I really liked that single and I’m eager to hear more. My favorite Tasmanians Quivers signed a deal with the coolest labels Bobo Integral and Ba Da Bing and announced a new album. Libby DeCamp released another magical song as did Charlie Marie. Zach Schmidt returned with a new single and so forth. If you want something a bit different, that Sweet Megg & Ricky Alexander is very charming. There’s also the new Shonna Tucker song that has been on Bandcamp a while. If it has been on Spotify before, I have missed it. And of course I might as well namedrop em all, but you’ll find them below.

That’s all for this week. I know I forgot something. Happens every week these days. Some might take that as a hint and quit, but I suppose I’m too stubborn. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #126

Another week, another new music weekly.

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno albums and that Dan Wriggins EP were my most anticipated ones this week, but we also got great new releases from Melody Duncan (I wasn’t familiar before but I really like this on quick listen), Max and the Martians, Cameron Knowles & Eli Winter, Rodeola, Kelly McFarling, Ty Maxon, Valerie June, Christian Lee Hutson (Version Suicides vol 2 EP streaming now), Israel Nash and David Ramirez (hymns). Also featured Mark Pickerel’s cover album that I missed earlier in the year.

The big one from Finland is the wonderful single from Laura Moisio. Other gorgeous Finnish cuts this weeks are singles from Punomo, Eerie Deer, Eden Prairie, New Silver Girl and Maria Milvus. Plus a revisit to Janne Laurila’s solo album from the past week.

And then there’s lots of fabulous international singles. The big news for were the album announcements and first singles from Evan Cheadle and Turner Cody & The Soldiers of Love. I’m also totally in love with the Esther Rose and Johanna Samuels (Elliot Smith cover) singles. That Esther Rose song is probably one of my favorite songs of the whole year so far. Some other favorites came from Renee Reed, Hiss Golden Messenger, Greg Loiacono & Jamie Drake, Kirty, Louien and Nick Jaina. A completely new one for me was Route 500, but I’m very fond of that song. I need to investigate that further. And as usual I could namedrop of them all and the further listening will even tell which become most important to me. Oh yeah and one of my favorites of the week was this song by Keven Louis Lareau, but that is only on Bandcamp.

Kelly Sloan, Johanna Samuels, Corinne Sharlet and Katy Kirby

A quick post of few songs that I’ve loved madly during the recent weeks. First up is the new Kelly Sloan single I Wanna Wake Up. I only knew her from last year’s Alias Ensemble collaboration project with Daniel Romano and David Nardi, but thankfully one saturday night I saw Jeff McMurrich’s (producer) post about this solo single. I instantly loved it and instead of sleeping I kept on listening to this dazzlingly beautiful song on repeat. A magical song that takes me somewhere to the early seventies. I can’t wait to hear more singles and a full-lenght album later in 2021.

Another forthcoming treasure will be the new album fron LA-based singer-songwriter Johanna Samuels. Excelsior! will be co-released by Mama Bird Recording Co and Basic Rock on the 14th of May. We got a brand new single Nature’s Way a couple weeks back and it’s a great one. There’s also a super lovely music video for it where you can spot some familiar faces.

Next up Portland, Oregon and a new song from singer-songwriter Corinne Sharlet. She has been working on her debut full-length with Ryan Oxford and it is coming out later this spring. Here’s the wonderful first single A Lovely Future.

Last stop on this small blog entry is Nashville, Tennessee and unlikely other ones, this album is already out and available. New Katy Kirby album Cool Dry Place came out on the 19th of February on Keeled Scales. Here’s my personal favorite from the album. This magical song is called Portals. Listen to / buy the whole album from Bandcamp.

Bobby Dove, Lowstar Rodeo, Melissa Carper and Quinn Pilgrim

Another quick round up of early 2021 favorites. Kicking this off in Montreal, Canada with classic country gold from singer-songwriter Bobby Dove. Hopeless Romantic has been my favorite album during the past week and I also purchased a digital copy on Bandcamp day. Such a special record and I love it to bits. Here’s a couple of great examples from the album.

Next some California country from Lowstar Rodeo. This is a solo project by Kevin Carducci from The Easy Leaves. I’m not actually familiar with the band and I think just stumbled upon this when I did my weekly bandcamp new releases search routine. I instantly liked it and the feeling has only grown stronger during the last few weeks and therefore I also picked this one on Bandcamp day. My own favorite song is Toward the Light, which is one of the best pandemic songs I’ve heard.

This one by singer-songwriter and upright bassist Melissa Carper isn’t out before next week, but after hearing the three advance singles, I’m fully convinced that Daddy’s Country Gold will be one of my favorite albums of the year. Just perfect timeless country gold. Here’s a couple of these gorgeous singles (Bandcamp didn’t have playable songs, but you can pre-order it there)

Last station on this roundabout is Louisiana. Singer-songwriter Quinn Pilgrim’s great new album Jericho Dream came out on the 22nd of January on Partially Sealed Records. It’s neither on the Partially Sealed Records Bandcamp or Quinn’s personal Bandcamp, but you’ll find it from the streaming services. My own favorite is Helpless One that gives some Townes vibes. Excellent record as a whole too and definitely a name to keep an eye on.
