OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #116

Another week, another new music weekly.

A year is coming to an end and the release schedule is not that crowded anymore. I’m also focusing on the year end list and might miss stuff. I will do this at least next week though, because there’s some most likely great ones still on the way. Duff Thompson, Desolation Horse, Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams and so forth.

Let’s start this week from the Finnish ones, because they didn’t get the memo that one should mostly release holiday tunes at this time of the year. There’s a candidate for the song of the year list from Kielo Kärkkäinen (first single from her next album) and the album of the year list from Bad Sauna. We also have great new singles from Pekka Laine, Tomi Nordlund & Syvä Joki, Matti, Vino Puu and Pelko. Plus revisit to the wonderful Nightbird album from the past week.

My favorite international album/release is the new Gladie EP. I’ve listened No Call List a few dozen times since yesterday. There’s also an album from Winston C.W. and EP from Matthew Ryan. I’m sure there had to be a few more. Langhorne Slim did release side A of Strawberry Mansion. Christo Graham album is a November release that I stumbled upon during Bandcamp day. First time on this list.

Update a few hours later: Just saw that Jeff Loops released an album. I added a song from it to the playlist as well.

As for international singles. A big one are the final Neal Casal singles. A new Esther Rose song is always exciting. Desolation Horse, Three Sacred Souls, LadyCouch and Pony Bradshaw also continue to impress. Oh yeah and Carla Geneve released a new band version of a song that I love oh so much. Everything else would of course be worth a mention, but you’ll find from the list below. And as mentioned last week, the Christmas song are on a separate playlist. You’ll find it from my Spotify profile or check the direct link from last week’s post.

That’s it for this week. First end of the year list is now on the blog too. More to come during the next couple of weeks. Love from a distance.

30 Favorite EPs of the Year 2020

Time for the silly year end routines. I try to do these year end lists rather quickly this time around. Not a whole lot of writing, but a whole lot of beautiful music. Here’s the first one which contains 30 EPs that I loved during this strange year. Maybe that’s a lot, but I could have easily picked another 30 without a drop in quality. Anyway, the first 20 are in random order and then there’s top 10 in some sort of not that serious ranking. The numbers are arbitrary. Music is love not a competition. I think it’s just maybe helpful for the reader to have some sort of vague order, because not everyone is an music addict like me and have time or interest to listen 30 EPs or 100 albums and therefore might be interested in what were the ones that I loved the most. Anyway, here it goes. Hope I didn’t forget anything important. Always scared of that and it’s often a justified fear. There’s a Spotify link at the bottom with one song from each if you are into that sort of thing. Sea Below and Gladie are only on Bandcamp at least for now (put another Gladie song on the playlist from one of their other EPs). Bandcamp is a better way to support of course.

Favorite EPs of the Year 2020

Gladie – Raw Nerve

A total last minute entry. Just bought it today, but hey I love it to bits and it’s my blog so I can make the rules. No Call List. That’s one hell of a song.

Rae Fitzgerald – Lonely Listener (Keeled Scales)

Jake Tittle – Pulling of the Label (Anxiety Blanket Records)

Lily Dabbs – After the Blues

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Texas Sun (Dead Oceans)

Molly Parden – Rosemary (Tone Tree Music)

Sea Below – Sleeplessness

Gianna Lauren – Vanity Metrics (Forward Music Group)

Via Mardot – Via Mardot (Eurotown Records)

Aaron Beckum – Songs from a Triangle Room

Kelsey Waldon – They’ll Never Keep Us Down (Oh Boy Records)

Daniel Markham – Shed

TK & The Holy Know-Nothings – Pickled Heat (Mama Bird Recording Co)

Fiver & the Atlantic School of Spontaneous Compositon – You Wanted Country? Vol1.

Matt Woods – Morning After (Lonely Ones Records)

Charlotte Cornfield – In My Corner (Next Door Records)

Tomberlin – Projections (Saddle Creek)

Dillon Warnek – Fruit from Crooked Trees

Will Stewart – Way Gone (Cornelius Chapel Records)

Psalmships – Another Tongue

10. Floating Room – Tired and True

Really like the whole thing, absolutely totally love the first two songs.

9. Dylan Rodrigue – Human Muses

This song. What a song. Damn.

8. Luka Kuplowsky – Judee Justin Arthur Mary (Mama Bird Recording Co)

Judee Justin Arthur Mary Rohmer Luka. What a dream team. Even bigger Luka deal is the new album of his own material. More about that on the album list.

7. Emilee Emiko – Emilee Emiko (Perpetual Doom)

I didn’t know anything about her when I heard the first song. It didn’t stop me from falling for it and every song that came after it.

6. The Deep Dark Woods – Broadside Ballads II

More beautifully told Broadside Ballads from the Canadian masters.

5. Cayley Thomas – How Else Can I Tell You?

This is solid gold from start to finish.

4. Terry’s Paradise – Shoobeedoo High, Shoobeedoo Low Pt.1 / Pt.2

There’s two parts to this. I can’t decide which one is better, because I need Full Moon from part one and Dotted Line from part two.

3. Abby Hamilton – Afraid of the Dark

Abby Hamilton from Lexington, Kentucky is one of my new finds of the year. I think I first found her single Fast through another great songwriter Justin Wells. I liked it a lot, did some investigating, heard Change Things and instantly fell in love with the song. A great EP and can’t get wait to hear more.

2. Le Ren – Morning & Melancholia (Secretly Canadian)

What a treasure from Le Ren aka songwriter Lauren Spear. Love Can’t Be the Only Reason to Stay was already one of my favorite songs of 2019 and the other three songs are also pure gold. I hope we get a full-length sometime soon.

1. Flora Hibberd – Archipelago

Flora Hibberd and Le Ren made my two big favorites and I went back and forth with choosing the EP of the year. I love them both just as much, but because Le Ren’s opening song Love Can’t Be the Only Reason to Stay already took my breath away in 2019, let’s give the imaginary EP of the year award to Archipelago. A stunning EP from Paris-based UK-born songwriter Flora Hibberd. Here’s a couple of examples of its magic.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #115

Another week, another new music weekly.

A super slow release week due to thanksgiving week I presume. Plus we are approaching Christmas and AOTY time, so release schedule starts to slow down in general too. Anyway, therefore there’s a bit more reappearances from the past week than normally.

I’ll start with the Finnish ones this week, because there’s a really important one from Fenno-Swedish songwriter Nightbird. A pretty world class stuff, if you ask me. So if you didn’t get enough new American folk and blues albums this week, give a spin to Travelin’ Baby. It’s a treasure. Other Finnish beauties on the list and my radar this week are an album from Hot Heros feat Iro Haarla, EP from Tiiu Helinä and singles from J.Kajan, Markus Perttula, Sepikka and Joni Ekman. The playlist also includes Jere Valkonen album from a week ago and revisits Antero Kaksikäsi single from the past week.

Not a whole lot on the international albums and EPs front, but a few beauties for sure. A new album from folk singer-songwriter Richard Allen was a lovely surprise. I loved his In the Front Room album in 2014 and this new one sounds gorgeous on quick listen. I can’t wait to give a more thorough spin soon. Probably all songs from Grace Gillespie’s new EP have been on this playlist during the past year. That is now out too. We also have a surprise album from Scott H. Biram, Max Bien Kahn’s stay at home demos plus Emily Barker has a new EP with three versions of Machine. Nick Dittmeier released an extended version of his 2019 EP. I also included wino-strut & friends. I mentioned it on the release week a few weeks back, but it wasn’t on Spotify back then. It is now, so I included it on the playlist this time. Luluc album came out in October, but I missed that at the time completely.

And finally the international singles. There’s a new one from long time favorite Matt Paxton. That matters every time. Never heard of Clara Mann before today, but her single destroyed me in a good way. Amazing song and can’t wait to hear more songs. Desolation Horse is another new one that hit a home run. There’s an album coming out in December on American Standard Time. Little Mazarn, Vilma Flood and Aaron Lee Tasjan released great new songs. Jacob Faurholt covered Sparklehorse and if you are looking for first class pop songs, check out the new track from The Boys of Perpetual Nervousness. As usual, everything is worthy of a namedrop, but you’ll find them from the list below. Oh yeah and there’s already been a ton of gorgeous Christmas singles and albums. I don’t want to put them on the weekly playlist so early on and therefore I made another playlist for the yuletunes. Otherwise I’ll forget them before I even want to listen to them. If you are already on the festive mood, you’ll find that playlist here.

I think that it is for this week. Thank you again for following this little blog. It matters. You matter. Love from a distance.

OCTA Music Weekly – Episode #114

Another week, another new music weekly.

This one was a giant release week, because some of my absolute favorite songwriters released new albums. I’m referring to J.E. Sunde and John Calvin Abney. I’ve loved their songs for a long time and the new albums are wonderful. Actually I’ve loved the music of Adam Selzer even longer and I was thrilled to see he released a solo record. If you are a really long time reader of this little music blog, you might remember his old a band called Norfolk & Western. I loved them back in the early 00s and Dusk In Cold Parlours is one of my all-time favorite albums. Give that one listen, if you are not familiar with it. That last song still stops time. A perfect album. Anyway, back to 2020 and the new solo album which also sounds great. I look forward to diving into it more thoroughly once I’ve done with this weekly round up thing-y. Oh yeah and that The Parson Red Heads album I mentioned a week ago is now streaming here in Europe too, so it’s on the playlist this time around. Moving on from long time favorites to new favorites. These Kacey Johansing, Laura Fell and Badge Epogue Ensemble albums sound fabulous on quick listen. And that’s just to name a few. Here’s a list of all new album/EP releases that were on my radar this week.

J.E. Sunde – 9 songs About Love (Vietnam)
John Calvin Abney – Familiar Ground (Black Mesa Records)
Adam Selzer – Slow Decay (Jealous Butcher Records)
Kacey Johansing – No Better Time (Night Bloom Records)
Laura Fell – Safe From me (Balloon Machine)
The Parson Red Heads – Lifetime of Comedy (You Are The Cosmos / Fluff & Gravy Records)
Badge Epogue Ensemble – Self Help (Telephone Explosion Records)
Partner – Never Give Up (You’ve Changed Records)
Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys – Late Night Essentials -Nov 9th release, but first time here
Tim Bluhm – Hag Heaven (Blue Rose Music)
Kelsey Waldon -They’ll Never Keep Us Down EP (Oh Boy Records)
Elan Noon – Colour Story
I Am Oak – Odd Seeds Pt1 (Snowstar Records) -Full album in December
Brenna Lowrie – Loss Leader EP -Jun 23rd release, missed it at the time
Ryan Burns & The Local Ghosts – Static Year
Jack Name – Magic Touch (Mexican Summer)
Ward Davis – Black Cats and Crows
Josh King – The Shed, SpoonKing
Emily Edrosa – Another Wave Is Coming (Park The Van)
Weezy Ford – All At Once (Field Electric Recordings)
King Hannah – Tell Me Your Mind and I’ll Tell You Mine EP (City Slang)
Huttch – Quick Fix EP
Slight Of – Other People (Dadstache Records) -28th of Aug release, shared the single failed the album release.

And outside of the streaming services, we’ll have at least a new album from Freschard. That’s always something love and cherish.

Moving on to the Finnish stuff. The only album release is the new one from Jerry Lindqvist, but it’s a really good one. As an addition to that there’s a mighty good run of singles from Janne Laurila, Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus, Antero Kaksikäsi, J.Kajan, Mauri Dark, Eerie Deer, Iisa, Ruissalo Amping, Radio Supernova. I was also ready to praise the new Nightbird album, because I thought it was a Friday release. However, it’s actually a 24th of November release, so you can check that out midweek if you want to hear a magnificent Finnish album.

Finally the international should-be hits aka singles. A couple of big album announcements from The Weather Station and Michael Feuerstack. If this blog and world still exists at the end of 2021, you’ll find those from my AOTY 2021 lists. Wonderful songs once again. Other personal favorites like Andy Shauf, Mariel Buckley, Aaron Frazer, Drew Beskin also have fabulous songs this week. Brian Johannesen released two amazing new songs. Duff Thompson is a new one for me, but I’m very fond of his new singles and look forward to hearing the album in December. As usual everything else would also be worthy of a mention, but you’ll find them all from the list below.

I think that is all for this week. Such a lovely week of new releases. Thank you songwriters for keeping me relative sane during these weird times. Love from a distance.
