Mid-Year Favourites – Finland

It’s been quite a year and I haven’t been a very active music blogger for various of reasons. So I’ll do a very quick mid-year round ups of releases that I should have been writing about. Thank you music for keeping me relatively sane throughout this first half of 2020 and thank you dear reader for following this little music blog. Here’s a quick list of Finnish releases that I’ve enjoyed. I’m sure there’s plenty I haven’t even heard at this point and it’s very likely that I simply just forgot something awesome. Feel free to educate me before December and the proper EOTY lists.

Albums:

The new album by Laura Moisio has been my biggest favorite closely followed by Kalevi Suopursu and Puhelinseksi. Others are in random order and can share the fourth spot.

Laura Moisio – Laulaa kun ei voi muutakaan (Texicalli Records)
Kalevi Suopursu – Yksin Yksiössä (Helmi Levyt / Jukan Musiikki)
Puhelinseksi – Sydänkohtaus tanssilattialla (Svart Records)

Veli – I Am Changing (Evil Veli Recordings)
joku iiris – joku iiris (Humu Records / Jukan Musiikki / Hillotehdas)
Joni Ekman – Sinulle.. (Soit Se Silti)
Joose Keskitalo – Nukkekoti (Helmi Levyt)
Vasas Flora och Fauna – Möte Med Skogsgardisterna (Startracks)
Hermaja – Kultasuoni (Helmi Levyt)
Pöllöt – Taas vähään aikaan (Svart Records)
Toni Hautamäki ja Ydinrauha – Kaikki ei ole miltä näyttää
Guggenheim-projektz – Dersu Uzala (Helmi Levyt)
Pintandwefall – Your Stories Baby (Soliti)
Untogethers – Simple Math (Iso Pinkki)
Love Sport – And Justice For All (Soliti)
Ninni Forever Band – Uusi yhtye (Jukan Musiikki)
Neiti Olga – Minä, Aina (Luova Records)
Muuan Mies – Onni (Helmi Levyt)

EPs:

The most important Veli release is the new full-length debut, but this EP also has some should-be classics like Elokuussa and Ainoo Lapsi. Other four beauties are in random order.

Veli – Kotiäänityksiä (Evil Veli Recordings)
Rami Vierula – Kasetilla
Marian Valinta – Epäile
Tams – Aikahyppy 2
Sami Heikkilä – Kaunein muisto (Luova Records)

Songs:

Not so surprisingly, the song list looks pretty similar to the album list. The devastatingly beautiful and poignant Kaukana onnesta by Laura Moisio is my favorite Finnish song of the year so far. Before the release of J.E. Sunde’s I Don’t Care to Dance last Friday, it was also my favourite song of the year altogether. Now it can share that place with J.E. Sunde. Kalevi Suopursu and Rock Siltanen follow along with 60+ more that you’ll find one from this ongoing playlist that I just updated. No need to type them all down, because you’ll find them from the embedded playlist. There’s new favourites like Teini-Pää and Punomo and the long time favourites like Viljami Kukkonen and Mitä Helvettiä Nyt Taas. It’s slightly top heavy and some big faves are in the beginning, but the order is completely random after the first 10-20 songs. I’ll keep on adding songs throughout the year.

Laura Moisio – Kaukana onnesta (Texicalli Records)
Kalevi Suopursu – Sinä olet minun sunnuntai (Helmi Levyt / Jukan Musiikki)
Rock Siltanen – Tulevaisuus ei oo sitä mitä se oli (Joteskii Groteskii)

OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #92

Another week, another weekly playlist.

A quick weekly playlist and release round up in the mid of the midsummer. This week sees the release of my favorite song of the year. If this blog / world still exists at the end of 2020, it’s very likely that the onechordnet song of the year will be I Don’t Care To Dance by J.E. Sunde. I’ve loved it since I saw this live at Pony Rug video and I’m thrilled that it’s now officially out and available. It just resonates so deeply with my shy, insecure and overly romantic soul. I love it as much as you can possibly love a song. It’s my heart in a song.

The big album releases came from Phoebe Bridgers, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, but there’s also great new albums from Julian Taylor, The Speedways, Darlin’ Brando, The Boomswagglers, Don Bryant, Jill Barber, Kristen Grainger & The True North, Grayson Capps (retrospective), Josh Kimbrough and DG Solaris. Plus EPs from Karima Walker & Katy Kirby, Mukiss and Starflyer 59.

oh and there’s new Twain album that’s only available on Bandcamp. I purchased copy yesterday, but I haven’t listened yet. I’m 100% sure it’s gorgeous, so check that out too.

Onwards to the Finnish section. My new big love Teini-Pää has their new single now on Spotify and it’s of course superb. Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. OCTA Weekly Playlist – Episode #91

Another week, another weekly playlist.

Not a whole lot of release action this week, but there was some really special ones. The new Leah Senior album was the highlight of the week for me. She continues to impress and I love her songwriting. A pop treasure is the new double album release from The Explorers Club. One is full of originals and one is full of covers. Both are gorgeous. Tommy Alexander released his new record this week. The whole thing is only available on Bandcamp at the moment (which is perfectly fine, because Bandcamp > Spotify), so I reshared a single on this list. There’s also new albums from Michelle Billingsley, John Craigie, Andrea and Mud, El Obo, Larkin Poe, Dougie Poole, Norah Jones, Sammy Brue and Scott Orr. There’s also great EPs from Abby Hamilton (Change Things is one of my favorite songs of the week, I watched a live youtube version several times) and Goldish (well this came out a week ago, but missed it then).

The big Finnish release of the week is the new Veli album. I’ve loved his songs since the Red Carpet days and it’s superb to get a full solo debut. There’s also fabulous new singles from Nightbird, Matti Jasu, Treemer, Maustetytöt, Isse and an album cut from Karstein Volle & The Telomeres (this came out over a month ago, but I missed it back then).

The song of the week is of course the last song from John Prine. The powerful new singles from Thee Sacred Souls and India Ramey are also wonderful, relevant and important. There’s also new singles from Arlo McKinley, Margo Price, Kyle Nix and so forth. Everything would be worthy of a namedrop too, but you’ll find them below.
