OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #169

Another week, another new music weekly.

It seems like the latest theme update changed a few things. Not sure I like the new font size etc, but I’m probably too lazy to start making changes. Plus editing the css might be a disaster waiting to happen, so perhaps I’ll see if I get used to this new look. The music and words matter more than the layout anyway. This seemed like the first really big release week, so let’s jump into that flood of great music.

Let’s start with the Finnish ones, because there’s a really big one finally out and available. It’s the wonderful debut full-length from Teini-Pää. I’ve loved them wholeheartedly from the start and I have zero need to start regulating my feelings towards them after hearing this super catchy punk rock beauty. The only other Finnish tracks are the excellent new Rosita Luu single and another cut from last week’s Punomo album.

The international album schedule got busy and there are plenty of great new albums. The album of the week here got to be the new Lost Dog Street Band that hit me pretty hard with just one single spin. I look forward to diving deeper into that one during the coming week. There’s also new albums from Jake Xerxes Fussell, Goodnight, Texas, The Whitmore Sisters, Anna Ash, Lonny, Marjorie (EP or a mini-album), Annika Norlin (aka Hello Saferide), Pedro the Lion, Artsick, Onsloow, Kids on a Crime Spree, The Genuine Fakes (EP, now streaming, has been on Bandcamp for a month or two), Adam Ross (Randolph’s Leap man going solo), Good Good Blood, Ben Sures, Aoife O’Donovan, Jana Horn, Dominic Billett, Fernando Viciconte, Robert Stillman and Henry Grace (a week old, thanks to TIAMS for the tip). Outside of streaming there’s at least Luka Kuplowsky’s new album of meditations and Ryan Allen’s EP.

And finally the international songs of the week. First apologies for somehow missing the new Darren Hanlon single in November. There was album announcement this week and after that I noticed that the first single has been out for a while. Well it’s finally on this playlist too. Other big favorites on the list this week came from MAITA, Apollo Ghosts, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, The Wave Pictures, Croy and the Boys, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears, Josienne Clarke, Renata Zeiguer, Robert Leslie, Theo Lawrence. Again just to name a few. There’s gold throughout the list. Even at the very end, there’s a really beautiful new Ryan Dugre single and a previously unreleased Songs: Ohia song. Both magical.

That’s it for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because a) if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each Sunday b) so that I don’t have a trillion of different playlists on my Spotify account. If you want to find the older ones I’ve moved them to the weekly playlist archive. So hit that link above and I’m sure you’ll find this playlist too.
