Mikko Joensuu – There Used To Be A Darkness (from Amen 2)

image

Amen 1 by Mikko Joensuu is my favourite Finnish album of the year so far. Second part of the trilogy Amen 2 is coming out in November on Svart Records. The first single There Used To Be A Darkness surfaced six days ago. I was a little bit wary during the early stages of the song, because the sound of Amen 1 is probably closer to the core of my music taste. Somehow Mikko still won my heart over during the 11 minutes this song lasts and when the song reached the end, all that wariness had vanished and it was time to hit the play button again. I gave it my best effort, but it turned out that it was just too hard to be a prejudiced grumpy prick when listening to this man. Sorry about that. See if you can do a better job by listening to this beautiful monster below. If you can somehow handle that, try Thief and a Liar from Amen 1 and your heart will definitely melt. I can’t wait to hear Amen 2 in November and Amen 3 sometime in 2017.

Vasas flora och fauna – Honda Monkey 7″

image

Vasas flora och fauna released a new seven inch single Honda Monkey a few weeks ago. I picked up my copy today from the 8raita record store, because I love Vasas flora och fauna and well I also had a Honda Monkey as a teenager. Albeit Suzuki PV probably was a cooler option back at Keuruu in the nineties, but I’ve never been the coolest kid/boy/man/whatever anyway. So I had Honda Monkey and loved it. The new single is out now on Swedish label Startracks. This is the music video for the song Honda Monkey.

Kuningas Yrjö – Mustelma myrskyn silmässä

image

I haven’t featured much Finnish music lately, but it’s time to change that, because there’s a lot of good stuff out and available. Let’s kick off things with the new Kuningas Yrjö album Mustelma myrskyn silmässä that came out today on Äänetön. You might know him as the front man of TV-Resistori and Hiljaiset kallot and in case you do know him, you also know that he is spectacular and this solo release is a must have album. Here are a couple of examples from different ends of his sound spectrum. Both are equally brilliant.

Michael McDonald – The Last Day

mcdonald

This is a welcome surprise and also a major news event on the One Chord to Another scale. Ladies and gentlemen, we finally have a new Michael McDonald album The Last Day ready, willing and able to charm us with its gentle beauty. And no, this is not that Michael McDonald. This is even better than that. This is the originally North Carolinian master of sweet pop songs who is living in Finland. His previous album Finally was the album of the year 2006 on this little blog of mine and the long time readers know the degree of love I have for that album. Damn hard to believe it’s been ten years though. Feels like that was yesterday. Perhaps because my heart is once again filled with Michael’s serene and timeless pop songs. This beautiful album is available at least on his Bandcamp page. This is Will I See You Again from the album. This matters.
