Ryan Tanner, Jay William Henderson & The Souvenirs

Oh dear. It’s been well over a month since the last update. Even though I knew that the world cup, summer and the day job will keep me otherwise engaged, it was never my intention to neglect the blog for a whole month. I think should never give myself a break, because somehow it gets harder and harder to start again. I should just maintain a steady pace, because that’s just easier than starting again. That way I don’t have too much time to wonder is this worth it anymore, because frankly, it probably isn’t. However, then there’s records like these below. Records that I hold very dear and records that hold me when I need a shoulder.

I don’t really know much about Utah’s music scene. Only thing that comes to mind is Drew Danburry and his alter-egos. Well actually that was before I got to know Ryan Tanner, Jay William Henderson and The Souvenirs. They are all from Salt Lake City, Utah (even though some do live in Nashville these days) and they are all oh so wonderful.

Ryan Tanner released his new album Together Is Where We Belong on the 15th of July. I had been waiting this one for a month or two, because every song I had heard sounded magnificent to me. The album lived up to the hype I had created for myself. I love the way it sounds. Even during the darker moments, the overall feeling is kind, caring and warm. Even spiritual. And those female harmonies provided by The Souvenirs lift these already wonderful songs to a whole another level. These below are called Days To Think Of You and Love Is All You Need and they are both from the new Ryan Tanner album Together Is Where We Belong.

Ryan Tanner’s album was engineered and co-produced by Jay William Henderson. Jay William Henderson released his own new album Hymns To My Amnesia also on the 15th July. That was seriously good day for fans of beautiful music, because this one is just as heavenly as Ryan’s album. I’m totally addicted and could listen to this all day long. One of my favourite 2014 albums so far. Occasionally this makes me think of Canadian troubadour Justin Rutledge. And what about the moments when the female harmonies come along. Pure magic each and every time. There’s two members of The Souvenirs (Kiki Buehner, Marie Bradshaw) and Debra Fotheringham singing on this one. Here’s Throne and White Dress from Hymns To My Amnesia.

As previously mentioned. Both Ryan Tanner and Jay William Henderson owe a big thank you for The Souvenirs. I probably would have loved those albums even without the harmonies, because the songs are so magnificent. Nevertheless, the beautiful backing vocals are a big part of the charm for me and The Souvenirs sang their way into my heart on those albums. Therefore I’m thrilled that they are also working on their own debut album. Needless to say that I’m more than eager to hear it. There’s a few songs out there already and they are oh so good. This one is called Paper Bag.

TIAM Special: Caleb Caudle, Fire Mountain, Kent Goolsby

This Is American Music is one of my favourite labels. These are the latest gems from their treasure vault of great current American music.

caleb

Caleb Caudle’s new album Paint Another Layer on My Heart will be coming out in late June 2014 on This Is American Music. Therefore I haven’t heard the whole thing yet, but the expectations are extremely high after hearing the first outtake from the forthcoming album a week ago. This wonderful song is called How’d You Learn and it goes like this.

firemountain

Fire Mountain’s debut full-length All Dies Down came out on TIAM on 20th of May and it has been on my playlist ever since. All Dies Down is a damn fine americana release. The title might seem a little hopeless, but this is not just doom and gloom. This thing actually holds a lot of beauty inside. These southern folk rockers certainly have a certain pop sensibility as well. This is Doing Fine from Fire Mountain’s new album.

I’ve shortly featured Kent Goolsby a few times over the years. This Is American Music released the new single Hitched by Kent Goolsby & The Gold Standard last week and it’s another great one. I’m very much enjoying the old-timey charm of this one. The B-Side Blues was also lovely little tune that made me smile, but this is the lead track Hitched.

Swaying Wires, Co-Pilgrim, I Am Oak

swaying

Some Blue Sky by Swaying Wires was on heavy rotation a few months ago, but a re-visit is in order, because yesterday I finally bought a physical copy of the record from the local record store. This wonderful thing has certainly hold its charm and still sounds hauntingly beautiful. Swaying Wires is a local Turku-based alternative folk band whose debut album came out on UK-label Battle Worldwide Recordings earlier in 2014. This is the opener Blinding Nights from the album. If you live in the Turku area as yours truly, you can go and pick up a copy from 8raita (price wasn’t bad either).

Battle Wordwide Recordings also just released a new album that is magnificent. This one is called Plumes and the band who made it is Co-pilgrim from Southampton/Winchester. I’ve followed the front man Mike Gale for several years. I’ve liked pretty much everything he has done, but haven’t seen a need to start shouting his name from the rooftops. Now I’m not so sure anymore. This is good. This is so damn good and like made for my taste. Beautiful pop melodies and a bit of warm sounding americana. And the vocals. Oh my. I’m so totally into the vocals and harmonies. This sounds like heaven. This is Grew Into Something New from Plumes.

I Am Oak is a dutch folk band led by Thijs Kuijken. There’s also a really small Finnish connection. He recorded his previous album in Finland and it was called Nowhere or Tammensaari. His new album Ols Songd came out in early 2014 and it’s again something rather special. These might be old songs, but they all sound magical to me. I already ended one of those playlist with this song Birches, but this is such a great song that my heart demanded a replay.

Common Tones – Shine

commontones

I wasn’t aware that Common Tones was still alive. I just assumed that the members were focusing on their other musical adventures (Klasu, Koria Kitten Riot etc). However, a few days ago I got an email that told me that they’ve released a new single called Shine and a full-lenght album will follow later in 2014. I was able to listen to that forthcoming album several hours yesterday and I really liked it. I liked it even a lot more than I expected. I’ve seen them play live many many moons ago. Probably at least five years ago. I liked them, but I didn’t think they were anything that special. This new album on the other hand is damn good. The possibilities are that a) I was a clueless twat back then b) they’ve gotten better over the years. Most likely it’s the combination of both. This one below is the new single Shine that you can buy from their Bandcamp page. If you want to help me, you can say what 90s or early 00s power pop band comes to mind when you listen to Lasse’s vocals in the verse. This thing is driving me crazy. There’s something so familiar.
