Micah Schnabel, The Weakerthans Tribute, Matt Woods and Will Johnson

Tonight’s quick round up of things I love starts from Columbus, Ohio. New Micah Schnabel album The Teenage Years Of The 21st Century comes out on the 3rd of December and it’s a good reason to hold on to your AOTY lists at least for another week. This powerful and important record will definitely be on my list when I write it in mid-December. Video for New Shoes appeared earlier in the year and the new single Emergency Room just a couple of weeks ago. Check them out below and pre-order the album from his Bandcamp.

One of my all-time favorite bands The Weakerthans got a tribute album a couple weeks ago. It’s called One Great Tribute! A love letter to The Weakerthans and can be bought from Bandcamp. There’s folks like Austin Lucas, Bry Webb and Frank Turner playing some of the finest songs of the past 20+ years, so what’s not to love. Here’s Anchorless by Austin Lucas & The Bold Party. Hit the links on the Bandcamp player to hear/buy the whole beautiful release. And in case you are not familiar, check out the whole The Weakerthans catalogue and John K. Samson’s solo records too.

Just in time for thanksgiving we got a new video from Matt Woods album Natural Disasters that came out back in June. Joey Kneiser directed this mighty great video for Cold Civil War. He made a video for the first single Blue-Eyed Wanderer too. Check it out here, if you missed it in the summer. And hey, the record is awesome, so again hit the links on the bandcamp player to hear/buy the whole thing.

Let’s wrap up this quick catch up posts with one of my favorite songs of this fall. Need of Trust and Thunder is an outtake from the wonderful new Will Johnson album Wire Mountain that came out on the 27th of September on Keeled Scales. I love the whole record, but somehow this is a song that I return to all the time.

MAITA, Mo Troper, Daniel Markham and Smug Brothers

Tonight’s quick round up contains some superb advance singles from 2020 albums. First up is the new MAITA single/video Can’t Blame a Kid. The Portland-based indie rock band led by songwriter Maria Maita-Keppeler was recently signed by Kill Rock Stars and the legendary label will release their debut album Best Wishes on the 1st of February. The two advance singles are so different yet equally wonderful. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing in February.

Sticking in Portland for the first single from the forthcoming Mo Troper album Natural Beauty. I loved his Exposure & Response album couple years back and therefore I have high hopes for this one. The lead single Jas from Australia is again an awesome melodic pop treasure. Look out for the full-length on the 14th of February on Tender Loving Empire.

Going to Denton, Texas for the next one, which is the new single Don’t It Feel So Good? from long time favourite Daniel Markham. He has a new album called Burnout coming out during the early stages of 2020 and this monster track is the lead single. And a damn impressive one. This is going to be one hell of a record.

It’s midnight, but let’s add one more, because who needs sleep anyway. This album from Dayton, Ohio’s Smug Brothers is actually out and available. It came out on the 8th November on Gas Daddy Go! Records. This one is a must listen for you, if you are looking for short and great american indie rock songs somewhat similar to Guided By Voices. Here’s a couple of wonderful tunes from their new album Serve A Thirsty Moon. Hit the links on the Bandcamp player to hear/buy the whole thing.

The Innocence Mission, Josienne Clarke, VanWyck and The Good Graces

Another very quick round up posts of songs / videos / albums that I love. It will be like this for a while now, because someone needs me more than the readers of this blog. Even though music bloggers probably should start compiling the EOTY lists for 2019, let’s start with a quick visit to the finest albums of 2020. There’s a new The Innocence Mission album See You Tomorrow coming out in January and I absolutely adore this advance single On Your Side.

Moving on to Scotland. Josienne Clarke’s new album In All Weather came out 8th of November on Rough Trade and it’s a wonderful folk album. The Drawing of the Line, Dark Clouds, Walls & Hallways are just so so amazing. The whole record is. Here’s a couple of favourites, but do click the links on the Bandcamp player to hear/buy the whole album.

Next this travel takes us to Amsterdam, Netherlands. The excellent new VanWyck album Molten Rock came out on the 15th of November on Maiden Name Records / Concerto Records. Here’s one of the singles Carolina’s Anatomy and another favourite Make of Me from the album. Best kind of video too, because there’s beautiful cats on it.

Wrapping this quick blog post in Atlanta, Georgia with one of my favourite songs during the past month or two. I Dropped Your Name is an outtake from the fifth The Good Graces album Prose and Consciousness that came out on the 11th of October. A great record as a whole too, but this one really hit me on first listen. Again hit the Bandcamp player links to hear/buy the whole album.
