OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #264

I had busy weekend, but here’s a quick new music weekly.

The album of the week is the new Willi Carlisle. Easily could be album of the year too, but let’s not decide that in January. Other great album releases this came week came from Matt Mitchell Music Co, Ismay, Gabi Hartmann (EP), Katy Kirby, Mol Sullivan, The Umbrellas, Sarah Jarosz, Spencer Burton, Chatman County Line and William Elliot Whitmore.

The Finnish highlight is the new Mikko Joensuu album. There’s also a beautiful album from Emilia Tuovila ja Väijytys and singles from Ilja Karsikas & Erik Bäckman and Ptak. Oh and worth mentioning on this section is also the single from Berlin-based The Usual Boys, because they are 1/4 Finnish.

International song of the week is the new one from Hurray for the Riff Raff. Other early faves came from Charley Crockett, Jason Hawk Harris, Mythical Motors, Liquid Mike, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, Christopher Paul Stelling, The Wannadies, Nathan Kalish, Thee Sinseers and so forth. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. I forgot to cancel Apple, so this is still a multi-platform monster and available on Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz, Apple and YouTube. Now time to vote and later on NFL playoffs. See you next week with another episode. Love love love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #263

A really sad week in the music media with the Pitchfork layoffs and a merge with a damn men’s magazine. A real add to insult there. Solidarity for all the great writers who lost their job. Hopefully the remaining ones are still allowed to highlight some less household names too.

Album of the week is the great new country beauty from Shawn Hess. New Clay Parker and Jodi James is another big fave. Then there’s also great new albums from Brown Horse, Mali Obomsawin & Magdalena Abrego, Lizzie No, Doug Paisley, Ryan Power, Swimming Bell, The Maureens, Green Day (surprised to see Green Day here? I know I am but had to share this pop beauty from their new album), Old Heavy Hands and Colby T. Helms.

A big Finnish release week led by new albums from Inginmaa/Hypnomen and Kielo Kärkkäinen. I love them both. New Teini-Pää song also pure gold as usual. Other Finnish gems of the week are albums from Pekka Nisu and Karlo Haapiainen & Varaslähtö plus singles from Oho!, Pieni Maailma, Rebekka Holi, Pink Chameleons, SaintPolis, Ruissalo Amping and M.

And finally the international singles. Maybe not a clear cut song of the week, but there’s plenty of great ones from Sierra Ferrell, Jamie Lin Wilson, Lana Nauphal, Leslie Stevens, Lance Howell, Adrianne Lenker, Pernice Brothers, Sam Evian, Eric Long, Adam Ross and so forth. Just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Remember that this is now on Qobuz at least for three more weeks. Actually it’s also on YouTube now. I’m not sure should it be there, but looks like someone had already transferred older episodes there so I guess it doesn’t matter if I do it myself too. This new music weekly is a real multi-platform monster right now. Anyway, Now back to NFL playoffs and back here next week unless some venture capitalist buys this for one million dollars. Love love love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #262

Another week, another year, another new music weekly. This is now a four platform monster, because I’m test driving Qobuz while I ponder my options. It won’t stay that way, because paying for four different platforms to make a hobby playlist doesn’t make a whole lot sense. Just wanted to give Qobuz a try. Some holes in the catalogue for sure, but the sound quality is wonderful especially when compared to Spotify. Anyway, I don’t really know what I’m going to do in the long run, but for the next little while this new music weekly is on Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music and Qobuz.

This first new music weekly episode of 2024 tries to cover the past few weeks that this was on hold. So not just this current week. There’s some mid-to-late December stuff too. I’ll get back to usual routine next week. I’m sure I simply forgot to include something, because I didn’t make notes when this was on hiatus. Feel free to send hate mail / recommendations to my inbox. There’s also like 5000 unread email submissions on the inbox and I probably won’t ever have time to go through them. Feel free to send it again, if you tried to reach me during the vacation.

John Craigie and TK & The Holy Know-Nothings is the album of the week. Austin Leonard Jones and Lee Baggett didn’t care about the eoty listmania and released great albums in late December. Big ones for me are also the brand new EP from Adam Remnant and December EP from Michael James Tapscott. Other album gems from December to today came from Fust, Justin Golden, Begale, Pinky Ring (EP), Drew Danburry and Wagging.

We already have a couple of awesome Finnish album releases too from Suosikki, Ippe Nilsson & The Narrows Bros and Santeri Sihvonen & Karjalan Konnat plus a very late great 2023 EPs from Rokki-Mari and iso pusu. 2023 album from Maiju Jouppi is first time on streaming services and therefore first time on this playlist too. Despite all those beauties, my favorite Finnish release of the week is the new single from Vähäsarja. Love that song. Another gem from the Helmi Levyt treasure vaults is the wonderful new Joonas Hauveli song. Kaunis veli is a new artist to me, but instantly really liked the single when I first heard it in December. Other beautiful Finnish singles came from Leija Lautamaja feat Pekko Käppi, Antti Autio, Ethel Suspense, Hiljaiset kadut and Kiss Disease.

The international single of the week is the new one from Willi Carlisle. There’s already a strong aoty candidate when that album comes out in a few weeks. Same goes for Frontier Ruckus too who also have a great single out and available. Other big favorites here came from The Lemon Twigs, Michael Feuerstack, Desiree Cannon, Vanessa Peters, Keven Louis Lareau (well these covers were on Bandcamp long time ago), Rosali, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Daniel Romano, Jeremy Ferrara, Paisley Fields, Charlie Parr, Joshua Ray Walker and so forth. There’s plenty, because this tries to cover a month of new music.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. If you or your friends are on Qobuz, listen this there too for the next month or so. It probably won’t there permanently unless I really fall in love with during the test run. Anyway, back here with another episode next month. Now time to focus on NFL playoffs. Love love love.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #261

One more before the holiday season. After this one there will be about a month long break. Unless I suddenly decide to throw in the towel the new music weekly should be back on your favorite evil streaming platform either week 2 or 3 in January. A lot of year end action to come before that. I had a busy day job week and didn’t manage to finish anything, but all the pointless lists should be here within a week or so. I’m taking the lazy route and probably don’t write anything. Just the lists with a playlist. Just don’t have the time and don’t think many cares about the writings anyway. Most will just look what’s on it. Anyway, here’s the final new music weekly of 2023. Did this very quickly so probably missed a thing or two.

Not many album releases anymore, but the quality is high. Bory and Michael Nau can share the album of the week title. I really like them and might get on the aoty list too, if I want to go back into the drawing board with that one. Probably not, because I’m not sure I have the heart to take anything out that I already have there. Great new albums also from BenBen, Smith and Tegio, Theo Lawrence, Apollo Flowerchild and Muireann Bradley.

From the Finnish side of things we have a new album from Lintudisko plus singles from Ty Roxy, Ruissalo Amping, Fernet Underground and Rohkeat Kuvat.

Some excellent international singles too from Itasca, Adrianne Lenker, The Tyde, Joanna Sternberg, Laura Jane Grace, Hallelujah the Hills and so forth. As usual the christmas stuff are on their own playlist.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional matters. It all matters if you want this to continue. Back with this on week 2 or 3. That’s the current plan. Now back to the eoty lists. Love love love.
