OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #223

Another week, another new music weekly.

Spent the week mostly listening to NHL podcasts, because of the trade deadline. So there’s probably plenty of stuff I missed. Still somehow managed to put together 70 song playlist in one day.

Sluice, I’m Kingfisher and Slaid Cleaves is my big three for this week. All wonderful in their own way. This week we also got new albums from Drayton Farley, Amanda Fields, Dogs at Large, H.Self, Hollow Hand, Jen Cloher, Bard’s Flying Vessel, Thorsten Nesch (EP), Ryan Allen, The Minks, Nate Fredrick (EP) and Joshua Quimby (EP).

The new albums from Ulla Kolla and Fernet Underground lead the Finnish release week. Two quite different albums, but equally brilliant. Bleak Moments, Ria & The Hi-Binders and Radio Supernova also have great new albums and then there’s excellent new singles from Ilja Karsikas, Tinyhawk & Bizzarro, Lempi Elo and Vellamo.

A lot of international singles too. New Kassi Valazza is the song of the week. We also have a new song from NQ Arbuckle which is nice. Laith is the latest Fluff & Gravy signee and have a single out there. New Zach Pack, Dylan Earl, Robert Ellis also gorgeous. From the poppier side of things we have gems from Bart, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, The Laughing Chimes, Dim Wizard, Lachlan Denton and so forth. And on the latter parts of the list there’s new song treasures from Michael Cormier-O’Leary, Hayden, Tommy Prine, Leo Walrus and many others. Too early to tell which will become biggest favorites.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Next week will also be a Sunday update, because I’m busy on Saturday.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #222

Another week, another new music weekly.

What a busy release week. This is becoming too much for one man to handle during one weekend. I need to learn how to cut the length of this thing. It’s not like anybody even listens the whole four hours of new music.

My big three for the week is Lemon Pitch, Jenny O. and Peg. All wonderful in the own way. Peg would probably the album of the week, if I had to pick just one. Sure that Iris DeMent album might also end up being the one when I’ve had more time to listen to it. We also got new albums from McKendrick Bearden, Dougie Poole, Swim Camp, Reece Sullivan, The Tender Things, Channing Wilson, Shooutouts, Lucero, Fixtures, Carol and Okonski.

Addition! A couple hours after I posted this, I saw the news about The Sons of Rainier album on Dean Johnson’s Instagram. Waiting a week to share this beauty felt too long, so instead of just including it next week, I updated this episode.

Things were a bit slower in Finland or I didn’t get the memos. My big love is the one that I missed a week ago and that is the first single from Ulla Kolla. Album out on Helmi Levyt soon. Also very fond of the new song from Janne Tapion Sisäinen Avaruus. Other excellent Finnish releases are album from Teksti-TV 666 and singles from Koisjärven Disko, Rami Vierula, Lyyti, Kissa, Samoaja and Eerie Deer.

The international single of the week is the Emitt Rhodes-like pop treasure from Vanity Mirror. Brent Randall knows this pop stuff. Also love that Sluice single. That’s going to me one hell of an album, because all advance singles have been pure gold. New Maya De Vitry is also a big fave and obviously Jason Isbell too. Abe Partridge song is also superb and from new to me category there’s a great single from Reyes. A few others that I’ve loved early on came from Jeffrey Silverstein, Josienne Clarke, Lena Minder, Dan Horne, The Lost Days, Wednesday, Two Runner and so forth. Too many to name(drop) and I haven’t listened enough to even know which ones will end up being biggest favorites.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #221

Another week, another new music weekly.

It was a really busy concert weekend here in Turku and I didn’t have a whole lot time to listen to new music. Somehow I still managed to put together a 60 song playlist. Just haven’t listened full albums yet.

The big one for me is the new Ron Sexsmith. I’ve been a fan since the late nineties and even the last one was an album of the year on this little music blog. This new one sounds again marvellous and I look forward to listening it on repeat for the next few days. We also got most likely great albums from Steady Holiday, Cat Clyde, Jaimee Harris, Benjamin Dakota Rogers, John Blek, Cliff Hillis and MAITA (acoustic versions).

New Plastic Tones album is the Finnish giant. My kinda album title there too. That Fernet Underground also delivers hit after hit. Then there’s also mighty good run of singles from Bleak Moments, Ghosts on TV, Maustetytöt, Markus Perttula, J.Kajan, Ne Galaktiset, Folkjykä & Kuntoutujat and Mr. Dad. Also included Aode’s single from the summer of 2022, because I don’t think ever included it here due to finding it so late (thanks to TKST I did found it). But I saw her live yesterday and liked it a lot, so I thought I don’t hang too tightly onto the brand new music mode. It’s a really beautiful song. Then at the end there’s another cut from Teini-Pää album and the b-side of the Pillow single.

And finally the international singles. Little Misty is back with a lovely new song. Let’s call that the song of the week. Other very early faves came from Robbie Fulks, Dylan Earl, Spencer Cullum, Peg, Doug Paisley, Haley E Rydell, Ellie Turner, Scree, Alfie Firmin, Angelica Rockne, Ben Folds and so forth. Even more difficult to name faves, because I haven’t listened these that much yet. So the biggest fave might be at the end of the playlist.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Love from a distance.

1. Ron Sexsmith – Country Mile (The Vivian Line, Ronboy Rhymes / Cooking Vinyl, 2023)
2. Steady Holiday – Under the Moon (Newfound Oxygen, 2023)

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #220

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’m on vacation plus it’s the Super Bowl weekend and therefore this is a bit rushed effort. I hope I didn’t miss too much good stuff. Feel free to send reminders / hate mail.

The really big one is again from Finland, because one of my favorite bands Teini-Pää released a new album. There’s also a great new album from Emmy June and singles from Plastic Tones, Radio Supernova, Pekka Laine, Captain Cougar and Pillow (well Pillow was last week, but I missed it then). Oh and there’s also a half Finnish, half Norwegian collaboration from Julia Gjertsen & Juha Mäki-Patola. Also revisiting last week’s Laura Moisio album and Ilmi Lupiini Martti EP.

From the international side of things I’m most intrigued by the new Andy Shauf album. A new Yo La Tengo album is always worth investigating. I’ve loved all the Tim Hill singles too and I look forward diving into the full album. Then we also have new albums from Theo Lawrence, Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band, Mary Elizabeth Remington, Pearla, Dignan Porch, William Harries Graham, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Jill Barber and Wolfpen Branch.

Lots of good singles too. I dig The Lost Days one which is a collaboration from Tony Molina and Sarah Rose Janko (Dawn Riding). Andy Sturmer has a surprise new pop monster on a soundtrack. James McCann released a couple from his forthcoming album. Esther Rose signed a deal with New West Records and released a single. I’m also very fond of the new ones from Hayden, Cinder Well, I’m Kingfisher, Andrew Gabbard, Slaid Cleaves, Robert Ellis and Goodnight, Texas. Again just to name a few and it’s way too early to tell which will end up being my favorites.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Next Super Bowl. Love from a distance.
