OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #215

Another year, another week, another new music weekly.

An earlier return than I anticipated, but better get back to it because it’s so easy to let things slide and so damn difficult to start again. This one has both brand new 2023 songs and stuff from late 2022 when this thing was on hold. I’m sure a bunch of cool things from late 2022 is missing, because I didn’t make enough notes. Sorry about that.

The brand new ones this week are EPs from Thorsten Nesch, Apollo Flowerchild, North Atlantic Explorers and an album from Wes Tirey (well a reissue). From the 2022 we have albums from Lily Talmers, Zach Bryson, Rattlesnake Milk, Raymond Richards, Dad Weed, Grotoko and The Hackles.

From the Finnish side of things, the big one is the return of Heartjet. I highly recommended their new EP, if you are into power pop and other melodic things. Other early 2023 gems are singles from Fernet Underground, MeriTuuli and JYLHÄ. The late 2022 treasures include album from Pölykuu and singles from Sami Heikkilä, Tams, Tiny Hawk & Bizzarro, Modem and Tender Lakes.

Early 2023 international single gems include new ones from H.C. McEntire, Evangeline Gentle, Graham Nicholas, Juni Habel, Cat Clyde and Lemon Pitch. From late 2022 there’s such beauties like new songs from Libby DeCamp, Ellen Froese, Brower and Via Mardot. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. That was mostly a quick round-up of things and most likely missed a ton. I try to get back to more usual broadcast next week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters, if you want this to continue. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #214

Another week, another new music weekly.

This is also the last one for the year. I need a break and there’s not a whole lot of releases around Christmastime. Back probably either on the weekend of week 1 or week 2. Depends on how much new music there is and how long of a break I need. I might add something on the top of this one during the break or just save it all for the next proper new music weekly. Haven’t decided that yet. But anyway, thanks for following along my new music adventure no matter if it’s regularly or occasionally. I really appreciate you following my take on it, because a lot of the actual music media are doing something similar and I’m just one man scraping it together on my spare time.

There’s still stuff coming before Christmas too. I already posted the EP and Finnish albums of the year lists and I’m working on the AOTY list right now. Probably some kind of songs of the year lists too, but those will be mostly just a playlist longer than anyone will listen. But enough with all that and on to the new music. Not a very deep dive, because I will spend a large chunk of this weekend on the AOTY list.

The big ones this week are singles, because two of my huge favorites released new singles. First we have the first single from the second Teini-Pää full-length. A band that I’ve loved since I heard the Täynnä kysymyksiä EP few years back. The new single is again wonderful. Surpringly good Finnish release week for December altogether, because we also got an album Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva Tilanne, EP from Kielo Kärkkäinen & Matti Salo and singles from Arppa, Ville Leinonen and Pölykuu.

The international hit is the new Kassi Valazza single. Absolutely love to see one of my favorite songwriters joining forces with one of my favorite record labels Fluff & Gravy Records (US) and Loose Music (Europe). The 2022 list isn’t even ready yet, but if this blog still exist at the end of 2023, I can guarantee that Kassi’s album will be on the 2023 AOTY list. On the international singles part there’s also previously unreleased Sparklehorse tune and great new singles from Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, The Secret Beach, Cat Clyde, Jarrod Dickenson and Nathan K. Just to name a few.

Some new international albums too. There’s beautiful ones from Kevn Kinney, Cooper Stoulil, lowercase roses and Smug Brothers (EP). I think there had to be more even though it’s December, but those were the ones that I found on a fairly quick search.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters and gives me motivation to come back for another year. Putting this together every weekend takes huge amount of my time and because the platforms don’t give a whole lot of stats to playlisters, all that social media engagement is kind of only way to know whether this work matters at all. So thank you for all that. Oh and I will drop Apple Music now, because the free months are over and paying for another service just doesn’t make any sense. So it’s Spotify and Tidal in the future. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #213

Another week, another new music weekly.

Quite a lot of good stuff out there. I was basicly ready to post my EPs of the year list on Friday, but then there was something like 4-5 great new ones available that probably should make the cut. So I put that one the backburner and did this new music weekly first. How do you beautiful people I think I ever get the lists done, if I have to spend 10 hours just listening to new music every Saturday. I think I’ll do one more of these next weekend and then I’m done. For the year, not for good. Before next weekend hopefully the EPs of the year and Finnish albums of the year lists.

Album of the week is the new one from Adeem the Artist. A very powerful album with excellent songwriting. Like mentioned above the EP ruled the game this week. There’s the split between The Lostines & Nick Shoulders plus new ones from Michael James Tapcott, Layten Kramer and Johanna Samuels. Not forgetting J.E. Sunde & Dory Bavarsky collaboration and the December volume from Thorsten Nesch’s montly EP series. This week we also got new releases from Bird Calls, Julia Sanders, Moriah Bailey, Tiny Vipers (EP) Ty Maxon, Fell Runner, Shirley Hurt, Brendan Benson, Deepest Bison (this already was out a while back with a different cover art. I know because I featured it), Burn the Louvre, William William Rogers (EP) and Luke De-Sciscio (seems like only the single is streaming, but there’s a full album on Bandcamp). Small Opera’s EP is from September, but I just found it last week and liked it a lot.

The Finnish highlight is the first single from the next Liila Jokelin album. Can’t wait to hear full album in 2023. Also great to have Captain Cougar back. Other Finnish gems of the week are album froms The Handkerchiefs and Oskarin Gramofoni and singles from MeriTuuli, SaintPolis, Salla Karonen, Emmy June, Sam Shingler and Fernet Underground. Well Oskari and Fernet was from a week ago.

International single of the week is the latest one from long time faves BMX Bandits. Other personal faves came from I’m Kingfisher, H.C. McEntire, Brooks and Bowskill and Ryan Necci & The Buffalo Gospel (well a new version of an old song, but yeah always loved this one).

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Hopefully some year end action during the coming week. No definite promises, because well this is a spare time hobby not a job. But they are coming. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #212

Another week, another new music weekly.

Slow release week, because the year is reaching its final stage and US had Thanksgiving. I’ll probably do 1-2 more this year depending on the release schedule. Then it’s time to bag it up if not for good than at least for the holidays. Most likely returning in the early or mid-January when things start happening again.

There were some big album releases though. For example The Speedways if you are into power pop and Model Shop if you are into indie pop. Then there’s the Ingredient debut album, which is a collaboration between Ian Daniel Kehoe and Luka Kuplowsky. And if you’re a frequent visitor of this little music blog, you know I love them both. Other beautiful albums came from Marker Starling, JB Paterson, Kasey Lee Rogers (EP/single) and Ruth Lyon (EP).

The star of the Finnish section is the new Tamara Luonto album. The advance single Neiti B is probably #2 on my still imaginary Finnish song of the year list and now the full album is finally is here. There’s also new albums from Ocelot, Suosikki and Jykä Sirainen plus singles from Teksti-TV 666, Kami Mate, Anton Haring, Tahtoisin kertoa sinulle tarinan, The Bablers, Vuoret and Radiofiskars Orchestra.

Pretty quiet on the international single part too, but there’s great ones from Sunny War, Elijah Ocean, Jacksonport, J.E. Sunde & Dory Bavarsky and Robert Forster.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. And like said the last week, the Christmas songs will be on an own playlist (Unless I accidentally feature it here too). I already made one for Spotify, but I’m sure there’s plenty missing. Feel free to drop a note, if you made one this year and want to be included. I’ll add it to Tidal later. Apple Music maybe not worth the effort, because my subscription ther ends December 10 and I don’t have the money to renew it. Love from a distance.

2. Model Shop – The Greatest Only (Love Interest, Meritorio Records, 2022)
