OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #207

Another week, another new music weekly.

Still very much under the weather, so I’ll keep this short. Not sure is this the same flu or did I caught something else, but I don’t feel good at all.

Album of the week is the new one from Julianna Riolino. It could be the Sylvie album too, but it’s mostly an expanded edition of the 2021 EP. And that was one of my favorite things last year and therefore I already knew the songs by heart. A big release week otherwise too and we got new greatness from Mightmare (Sarah Shook’s other band), Plains, Bill Callahan, Jeremy Squires, M. Lockwoord Porter, Field Medic, Harmony Index (EP), Eliza Edens, Terra Spencer & Ben Caplan, Alela Diane, Stephen Becker, Julian Taylor, Miko Marks, Nicholas Mudd (EP), Logan Farmer, A.O. Gerber, The Lowest Pair & Small Town Therapy, Edith Judith, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, Wild Pink, Matthew J. Rolin, Ben Varian (EP), BATTS, Skullcrusher, Witch’s Wall (EP), Rachael Dadd and Cory Branan.

Finnish hit of the week is the new Hexehexe album. That works as a Halloween soundtrack too, if you celebrate such a thing. We also got a great run of singles from Eden Prairie, Astrid Swan, Joose Keskitalo, Folkjykä & Kuntoutujat, Markus Perttula & Aini, Jere Ijäs & Monacon Työväen Palloilijat and Pastis. Oh and also included the other side of that Heta Narkaus double single I featured last week too.

The international single of the week is the new Bart single. Again a slice of melodic pop heaven from them. Some other early favorites came from Tommy Alexander, David Miner, Wild Earp, Joan Kelsey, Moriah Bailey and Model Shop. Again just to name a few.

That’s it for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. Sorry if I messed up or forgot something. My brain is full of fog. Now I’ll crawl into some corner and try to heal myself. Hopefully I feel a bit better next week. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #206

Another week, another new music weekly.

I’ve been sick with some sort of non-covid flu/cold for the past few days, so my apologies in advance for all the spelling errors and releases that I missed. Didn’t really have the energy / brain capacity to go through the submissions, so this mostly contains stuff I knew beforehand.

Courtney Marie Andrews and Caleb Caudle can share the album of the week honor on this busy release week. I’ve been a big fan of both for several years and the new records are again beautiful. That Tobias Berblinger album I mentioned a couple weeks back got that vinyl release this week and therefore I featured it again. Small Sur album is also one of my personal faves of the week. We also got new releases from Courtney Patton, Jimmy Jay Swinn (EP), Chris Kasper, Jenny Berkel (EP), Robert Connelly Farr, Bonny Light Horseman, Elysian Fields, Christy Hays, Barrett Davis, Shabason & Krgvich, Partner (EP), Bryan John Appleby, Thorsten Nesch (EP), Alvvays, The Golden Rail, The California Honeydrops, Say She She, Band Laredo (EP), Will Sheff, Johanna Rose (EP) and Town Mountain.

The big one from Finland is the new 22-Pistepirkko album. A very special double single from Heta Narkaus too (check the other song too, because it was a coin flip which one I include on this one). Also regular kind of one side single gold from Sam Shingler, Message Field, Sammal and Vino Puu.

It was such an album/EP heavy release that most international single favorites are on the latter half of the playlist. Yeah, despite mostly doing just a damn playlist these days, I’m still an album guy first and therefore want to always highlight those in the beginning. I think my early favorite here is the new Gladie song. I’ve loved that band ever since I heard 20 / 20 some years ago. Other early favorites came from H.C. McEntire, The Delines, Sylvie and Clara Mann. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #205

Another week, another new music weekly.

The big one this week is the new Tyler Childers album. I didn’t start with it though, because I rather highlight some lesser known gems in the beginning of the playlist. I’ve been digging the new Shawn Hess album, so that’s my album of the week. John Fullbright also made a great return and I’ve been listening to that one quite a lot. On the other end of the onechord.net musical spectrum we have some gorgeous albums from Office Culture, Eli Pearl, Bill (EP) and Lee Baggett. I’m not sure is this genre-hopping a good thing, but that’s how it will always go here because I can’t paint myself into just one corner. Oh yeah and that 2nd Grade album is a mighty good one, if you want some great power pop. That’s not even all and the week also gave us new albums from Freya Josephine Hollick, Have Gun, Will Travel (EP), Shannen Moser, The Uplifting Bell Ends, Julia, Julia, The Barbaras, Mary Bragg, Matthew Check and Lambchop. There’s also Kayla Mahomed (EP) from the week before.

The Finnish highlight of the week is the new Treemer mini-LP. Other early favorites are the new singles from Litku Klemetti and Joose Keskitalo. This week we also got an EP from Tumma Paahto, album from Hiekka and singles from Ocelot, Raivo Jackson (TVZ cover), Särkyneet and Ville Miettinen. Oh yeah and at the end there’s also another song from the Knife Girl LP from the past week.

The international single of the week got the be the new Ron Sexsmith single. Also love that Erin Rae single. An outtake from the sessions of her 2022 album. Still one of my own favorites of the year. Rich Man is a strong song too and by no means just a throwaway that didn’t make the album cut. Oh yeah Melissa Carper and Tommy Alexander released more gold from their forthcoming albums. Love those songs a lot. Oh yeah and Pony Bradshaw, Dawn Riding, Caitlin Rose and M.Lockwood Porter songs are of course wonderful. Some pop gems too from the likes of Quivers, Dazy, Daniel Wylie, Martha and Ian M Bailey (this last one is a month old, but I missed it at the time). Shabason & Krgovich track is another early fave, but as usual I could namedrop all of the songs in this text.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #204

Another week, another new music weekly.

This week I made also some sort of genre-specific playlists based on these new music weekly posts. There’s one with power pop, soul and Finnish language songs and you’ll find them from my Spotify and Apple profiles. I can add to Tidal too, if there’s interest. I’m not really sure how I will operate those. This new music weekly remains the main thing, but maybe I’ll pick some songs from these to those bi-weekly or monthly or something. So everything will be here first. I thought about folk / country / americana thing too. Or women of folk or something like that. I do cover that pretty well here with this playlist so maybe somewhat unnecessary. Power pop and Finnish language stuff are dear to me but still gets a smaller role here and therefore made perhaps more sense to highlight them separately as well. We’ll see. Feel free to make a request, if there’s something specific you’d love to listen.

And on with the new music weekly. New solo Benjamin Tod is probably the album of the week here with Nikki Lane and Mr. Sam & The People People albums on its side. Other album treasures of the week came from Jake Blount, Chris Canterbury, Felix Hatfield (I don’t know anything about this album. I didn’t find a word about it anywhere but it was on my release radar), Jason Dea West, Drew Beskin & The Sunshine, Lenny Bull (EP), Herman Dune, Maya Hawke, Lande Hekt, Jessie Baylin, Weeping Willows, Sunny Sweeney, Lily Arbor, Quinn Cicala (EP), Marisa Anderson and Status / Non-Status.

A strong Finnish release week too led by the awesome Knife Girl album. I wasn’t that big of fan of the early stuff, but this album is wonderful. Plenty of other gems too. I love the band Lokit, so lovely to have a new EP from them. And how about new Kytäjä album. Well count me in for sure. Then there’s also great albums from Torrances and Radiofiskars Orchestra along with singles from Joni Ekman, The Southgates and Tuomo & Markus.

Two quite different songs can share the international single of the week title. First we have new beautiful solo single from Taylor Kingman. It’s the first outtake from his new album that is due out November 18th on Mama Bird Recording Co. Then we have a real dream collaboration from two huge blog favorites Ian Daniel Kehoe and Luka Kuplowsky. Together they go by the name Ingredient and the first single is now out on the Telephone Explosion Records. I also want to highlight a couple of awesome indie pop singles from Field School and Model Shop. Some other early faves came from Colter Wall, The Delines, Ellen Froese, Eli Pearl, Why Dogs Why, Stephen Becker, Small Sur, Jeremy Squires and The No Ones. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.
