OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #211

Another week, another new music weekly.

What a strong week of releases. If you had already compiled your aoty lists, it’s time to go back to the drawing board. One could make a pretty high quality top 10 just by using the albums released on the 18th of November.

Melissa Carper and Taylor Kingman were on the top of my list and both made wonderful albums. Then there’s the return of Caitlin Rose and that is a parade-worthy event. Cassidy Snider & The Wranglers followed one of my fave EPs of 2021 with a strong debut album. I only discovered David Miner when the advance singles of his album started to surface. Now the full album is here and I’m loving his heartache country. That Sarah Lee Langford & Will Stewart is also special. On the other side of the octa musical spectrum we have new album from Gladie, which is always a big deal. Field School album and The Laughing Chimes EP is a good combo, if you need some excellent indie pop. That’s just a small fraction of all the action and there’s also awesome releases from Liz Jones, Rob Dobson (ok this one’s a few weeks old, but I missed it before), Isaac Hoskins, Billy Strings, Old Californio (mostly covers), Neal Francis (EP), Claude Munson (EP), Weyes Blood, Ian Wayne, Reed Turchi, sock jock (EP), Joe Wunderle and Dogwood Tales (EP).

A new Message Field album is the star of the Finnish section. Other beautiful things from Finland are albums from Sammal and Ville Miettinen, EP from Lala Salama and singles from The Handkerchiefs and Otto Mikkola. The playlist also revisits last week’s gorgeous Heta Narkaus album.

The international single of week is the new one from The Lostines. Check out the music video too. Other big faves came from Tim Hill, Ron Sexsmith, Doug Paisley, Andy Shauf, Lilly Hiatt (well cover, but a damn good one), Robert Ellis (same as Lilly), Olivia Rudeen, Nathan K and Toria Wooff. Again just to name few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Oh yeah and there’s a whole lot of Christmas songs there already, but I won’t flood this playlist with them. I’ll make an own list for them sometime in a week or two, so those who love them can find them and those who hate them can ignore them. I like them, but not yet in November. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #210

Another week, another new music weekly.

First some news regarding Tidal. They finally introduced public profiles and therefore it will be easier to share stuff. A welcome addition. You’ll find my profile here, if you want to follow. Right now there’s only this new music weekly, but I will add more playlists there soon-ish.

Album of the week is the new wonderful Dawn Riding album. Ellen Froese album is another big one for me, because I’ve loved all the singles during the last year or two. Plenty of other gems too and there’s new albums from Joan Kelsey, Jonny Kosmo, Black Sea Dahu (EP), Jeb Loy Nichols, The War and Treaty (EP), Dominic Angelella, S.C.A.B., Breanna Barbara, Elizabeth Moen, Wesley, Andres Miguel Cervantes (well this is actually from March, but I missed it then. Shame on me, because I loved this on first spin. Found it now because it was on same label as Dawn Riding), Suzannah, Jack Schneider, Franz Nicolay, Katy Rea, Macie Stewart (expanded Euro edition of the album from last year, so this is revisit but a worthy one), Wax Atlantic, Jamie Stillway, A Vulture Wake (well merges the earlier two EPs into one LP), Larkin Poe, Joseph Decosimo and Frances Ford.

The Finnish section has a pretty good size this week and it’s led by the great debut album from Heta Narkaus. I have nothing but love for all the singles and now the equally beautiful album is here. I also want to highlight the very moving Anis Kiitu single and the first outtake from the next Salaliitto album. Other Finnish treasures are album from Tuomo Mannonen along with singles from Ilja Karsikas, Vellamo (missed this last week), Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilanne, Lätsä, Suosikki, Radio Supernova and The Handkerchiefs.

The song of the week is the lovely new Steven Van Betten solo single. The new single from Gena Rose Bruce that features Bill Callahan is also fabulous. Other early favorites came from Pretty Matty, Jarrod Dickenson, Cassidy Snider & The Wranglers, Dad Weed, Bec Stevens, Field Guides, Shirley Hurt and Jen Cloher. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. A lot of great albums coming on the 18th (and probably later too) too so don’t lock and post your EOTY lists yet. I know there’s some in the way that will claim a spot on my list. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #209

Another week, another new music weekly.

A small delay, because I spent a day in Tampere watching NHL Hockey. Therefore this isn’t a very deep dive either, because I just didn’t have the time to do the usual Bandcamp and email searching. If I find something later, I will include it on the later episodes.

Let’s give the imaginary album of the week title to the new Dungeon of Skeletons. Extremely highly recommended if you are into power pop and other melodic adventures. I’ve loved all their singles during the last year or two and now those are all here along with bunch of new pop treasures. A big surprise was to see a new Charlie Whitten in the new release folder. I love his music, but I guess hadn’t been following that closely because I had not heard anything about this before I saw it on Friday. I didn’t have the time to listen the whole thing, but that song I put on this is just crazy good. I love it so much. I also want to highlight the new Clara Mann EP. Last one was the EP of the year and this one sounds great as well. There’s also new albums from Isla Craig, Delving, Gold Dust, Emily Nenni, Rayland Baxter, Brody Price (this was last week), Thorsten Nesch (EP), liv. , Tenci, Bird Streets, Darren Hayman, The Reds, Pinks and Purples (EP of rare stuff), Derek Ted, Ben Somer, Martha Scanlan & Jon Neufeld, First Aid Kit, Dave Stroda (EP) and Big Joanie.

From Finland the highlight is the new Joni Ekman album. Sam Shingler also released the great first half of his forthcoming album and then there were excellent singles from Mountaines, PK Keränen & Leija Lautamaja (aka The Moontwins) and Vasas flora och fauna (which could also fall under the international bracket). I’m sure there had to be more as well.

Last some international singles. Some personal favorites came from Caitlin Rose (feat Courtney Marie Andrews), Kimmi Bitter, H.C. McEntire, The Provincial Archive, Steady Holiday, Joan Kelsey, Layten Kramer, Gladie and Cassidy Snider & The Wranglers. Again just to name a few.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. All matter a great deal mean while I ponder the meaning of life and this new music playlist. Hopefully back next week to more regular schedule, because lately there’s been everything from covid to NHL to keep this one on the back burner. Love from a distance.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #208

Another week, another new music weekly.

If you didn’t follow my social media and wondered why there was no new music weekly last weekend, the reason was that I was down with covid. I didn’t have any severe symptoms, but didn’t have the energy to make this either. Even this week was a little questionable, because a) seems like even a mild case can hit your general condition pretty hard. I’ve been testing negative since Tuesday, but still even a minor activity seem to drain away all energy b) being forced to take the week off made it easier to see that it really didn’t matter all that much there was no OCTA new music weekly. Independent music will do just fine with or without this. Still I forced myself to continue, because it’s so easy to let things slide and so very difficult to start again. With this one, I try to cover the past two weeks. Therefore it’s slightly longer than usual. I still left out some singles that on a normal week would have made the cut. Oh and I know I missed a bunch of stuff while I was sick. Sorry about that.

I think my favorite albums of the past two weeks are the ones from Twain and Tommy Alexander. This was also a pretty damn good two weeks for guitar pop, because there’s albums from Martha, Sloan, Why Dogs Why, Sloan and I Was a King. All really good. A lot more of course and these past weeks gave us great albums from The Mellons, Lincoln Barr, Josienne Clarke (cover EP), Mackenzie Roark, Garrett T Capps, This Lonesome Paradise, Drugdealer, Young Gun Silver Fox, Lee Fields, Honey Harper, Jessie Marks, Aoife Nessa Frances, Native Harrow, Junius Meyvant, Mali Obomsawin, Dear Nora, Nuevo, Will Payne Harrison, Emily Scott Robinson (EP), Ian M Bailey, Way Dynamic, Angela Easterling, Ryan Baine, Scott Hirsch, Hermanos Gutierrez, Babehoven, Gabe Lee and Nev Cottee.

The Finnish highlight is the new amazing Litku Klemetti album. Very fond of the new Message Field single too. Then there’s also beautiful albums from STINAKO, Sin Cos Tan plus singles from Joose Keskitalo, The New Magnetic North, Emmy June, Arppa, MeriTuuli and Pölykuu.

And finally some noteworthy international singles. A return of Hayden is most welcome and the new single is a beauty. I love that Tim Hill song as well. Oh and new Sam Burton is just perfect. Those three can share the song of the week title. Other faves came from Taylor Kingman, Melissa Carper, Dawn Riding, Sunny War, Clara Mann, Ingredient and Brock Mattsson. Just to name a few. Some special cover action too from Flora Hibberd for example. Just to name a few.

That’s all for this week. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Next weekend there might be a delay too. NHL Global Series is in Finland and I’m going to the Blue JacketsAvalanche game on Saturday. So the new music weekly goes until very late on Sunday or even Monday. We’ll see. Love from a distance.
