OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #228

A little bit delayed Easter edition of the new music weekly. So much new music this week and I didn’t have whole lot time to go through it all. So I’m sure there’s stuff missing. But here’s a quick weekly roundabout anyway.

We have new international albums from Bart, Nico Paulo, Hayden, Wednesday, Liquid Mike (this one’s a month old pop blast. Missed it at the time, but lately FranziaMom is making sure everyone is listening to it. Thankfully so, because this is great), Gregory Pepper and His Problems, The Hackles, Robbie Fulks, Charlie Hill, Angela Autumn (EP), Carter Sampson, Charlie & Margot, James Steinle, Dan Horne, Devon Church, Bobby Stevens, Jana Horn, Heather Woods Broderick, Emma Tricca, Matthew Logan Vasquez, North Americans, Murphnick and The Ferdy Mayne / Turner Porter. A whole lot to type, let alone listen.

From Finland the big one is the new Haamusoittajat EP. Forgot to mention last week that they have a wonderful new EP on Bandcamp. Now it’s on the streaming services too. Love the band. Other big Finnish fave is the new Kalevi Suopursu single. Then there’s also beautiful albums from Lempi Elo and Kadonnut Manner and singles from Thomas Ignatius, Knife Girl, Liila Jokelin and Metsäheikki.

So many albums this week that the singles are buried at the end of the playlist. There’s awesome new ones from Sam Burton, Jason Isbell, Summer Dean, Lolas, Mike Frazier, Possum, Katie Jo & Elijah Ocean, Withered Hand and many others. Just to name a few. Too early to tell which will become long time friends and which just lovely acquintances.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Love from a distance.

Oh and do buy the vinyl/cd/download. Spotify and other streaming services are perfect for these introductory purposes, but try to buy at least the music that matter the most to you

I’ll make the playlist on Spotify and then transfer it to Tidal. This means a few tracks might be missing from the Tidal version, if they are not available on that platform. Usually it’s 1-3 tracks that are not on Tidal. There’s a bunch of older episodes on my Spotify profile, if you miss an episode or want to revisit.

If you are looking this after a week has gone, the embedded Spotify will show the latest playlist. I’ll just update the same playlist because if someone wants to follow it, they can just follow that one list and will get a new set of songs each weekend.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #227

Thanks again Silmien Takana for that Courtney Marie Andrews concert. I had a great time. Seeing a marvellous concert and meeting likeminded people means a whole lot and also gives some inspiration to keep on doing this music blog. Next day was a little rough, because I was home at 1.30 am and had to start driving to work at 4.30 am. A lovely snow storm was a nice bonus, but it was all totally worth it. We also had more awesome concert news this week, because a big favorite Kassi Valazza will be playing in Tampere on the 14th of July. We’ll see will there be more Finnish dates. Anyway, here’s the new music of the week.

The No Ones, Those Pretty Wrongs and The New Pornographers have some classic pop stuff to start the playlist, but let’s give Haley E Rydell the album of the week title. I’ve loved the singles and now the album is here too. There’s boygenius too of course and new one from Aaron Beckum is always exciting. Then we also have great new releases from Rachel Baiman, Bennett Wilson Poole, The Hold Steady, NOVA ONE, Scott McMicken and The Ever-Expanding, Perry Brown (EP), Asha Wells, Alasdair Roberts, Lauren Morrow, Thorsten Nesch (EP), Jason Joshua, BenBen (EP), Nick Waterhouse, Masahiro Takahashi, Eddie Chacon, Steve Gunn & David Moore, Mighty Poplar and Lyon$. Oh and there’s a new Damien Jurado too and that’s always a big deal. I haven’t listened the whole thing yet, but I’m confident I’m going to love it. That’s only on Tidal and Apple versions, because he took his stuff away from Spotify. I still mostly use Spotify for the making of this, because it’s a whole lot better than the alternatives for new music discovery purposes. Hopefully they figure out the other stuff too. Like paying more for artists. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda.

A whole lot of Finnish stuff this week. My new big fave ITE EEROLA has a new album Kolmen päivän levy vol.2 available. Everything done from songwriting to recording in just three days. Works surprisingly well too. Due to the fast-paced circumstances it can’t be a five heart classic like On tullu ajateltua kuolemaa ja semmosta, but there’s a whole lot to love here too. Joutavia and En rakasta enää sinua (vaikka oletkin kaunis) are the ones I love the most. Such a great songwriter. Big week for Panama-levyt in general, because that Pillow album is mighty good. Other great album releases came from Markus Perttula, Fox Confession and Marjo Leinonen & Bublicans. Bunch of gorgeous singles too from Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L, Keidas, Kissa, Ty Roxy (Ville Valavuo Remix), Sepä Juuri, Kärmes and Pambikallio. I also put Markus Krunegård among the Finnish ones, because he is now releasing music in Finnish on a Finnish label.

So many album releases that international singles got buried until the latter parts of the playlist. Not sure can you give a cover the song of the week honors, but I really enjoy Austin Lucas delivering a great version of Against Me! song Baby, I’m an Anarchist. Other early favorites came from Bart, Greg Mendez, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Michael James Tapscott, Jobi Riccio, Robert Ellis, Cinder Well, Emma Frank, and Johanna Samuels. Again just to name a few and I don’t really have any idea yet which will become longtime friends and which just lovely brief acquaintances.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters more than you realise. Next week is Easter, so not really sure about the time frame for the next new music weekly. I think I will make it, but don’t know when exactly. Plans are still in the air. So anything from Saturday to Tuesday is possible. I’ll let you know on social media, if there’s a long delay or no weekly at all.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #226

A lot of music this week and not a whole lot of time. Here’s a quick round up of things I managed to find.

The Reds, Pinks and Purples and Andrew Gabbard are my albums of the week. Big fan of both and the new albums sound marvellous on quick listen. This week we also got new releases from Jake Paleschic, Two Runner, Ellie Turner, Dom Flemons, Lankum, Stephen Wilson Jr, Jerry Leger (cover EP), The Wynntown Marshals (EP), EP’s Trailer Park, Darren Jessee, Pelvis Wrestley, DAZY (EP), Chris Picco, The Sprouts, Alison Eales, Oscar Lush, Yours Are the Only Ears, Kyle Chason (EP) and Steve Dawson.

Not a whole lot on the Finnish release calendar or I didn’t get the memo. Also revisiting last week’s big album releases from Otto Mikkola and Maustetytöt.

This week I actually did a few short blog posts that weren’t a playlist. Yay me. Most likely a temporary thing though. This new music weekly routine is the main thing that keeps the blog alive. Everything else is just a bonus that might or might not happen. Sure sometimes I feel like I should come up with some sort of mid-week feature that wouldn’t require too much time to make it, but it’s more fantasy than reality. Anyway, just thought I mention that there’s a couple of music video / song posts on the blog in case you missed them.

A bit slower release week on the album front. Doug Paisley and The Lost Days can share the album of the week honor. There’s also great new albums from Whitney’s Playland, Bec Stevens, Terminally Phil, Roger Harvey (EP), Kendall Lujan (EP), Flyiing Colours, Yves Tumor, Rachael Dadd (EP) and Christian Kjellvander & Tonbruket.

A lot of Finnish gems this week. The new albums from Maustetytöt and Otto Mikkola are the big ones. I really like both. Kristiina who has quickly became a huge favorite released a new (should be) hit single. I would love to hear her album asap. All the Pillow singles have been wonderful as well. Other excellent Finnish releases are album from Ville-Veikko Liekkinen and singles from Ghosts on TV, Janne Laurila, Mr.Dad and Aleksi Oksanen.

The international single of the week is the first one from J.E.Sunde’s next album. I’m a huge fan and this is again such a gorgeous song. Other early favorites came from Chris Staples, Esther Rose, Pat Hull (well this is a few weeks old cover), Mike Frazier and Alfie Firmin. Again just to name a few. Too early to say which will became long time friends and which remain as just lovely acquaintances.

That’s all for now. Like, share, follow and all the usual promotional nonsense. It all matters. Oh and I’m not really sure about the next new music weekly. Will I even have the time to compile it next weekend? There’s the Courtney Marie Andrews concert on Sunday in Helsinki (I hope I see you there) and Friday and Sunday there’s festival action here in Turku. I’ve been too lazy and indolent to secure a ticket to the festival though, so if it’s fully sold out, I might have time to just listen to new music at home. I’ll keep you up-to-date on the social media platforms in case someone is actually waiting for this. It might be hobby as usual, delayed until Monday or just skipping one week altogether and trying to cover two weeks with the next one. But let’s stop this rambling.
