OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #232

What a great release week when it comes to albums. A really big three here from CARLENE, Dean Johnson and Michael James Tapscott. They can share the album of the week honors this time around, because I love them all so much. Those CARLENE singles have been so amazing and now there’s a beautiful folk album too. That Dean Johnson album has been a long time coming. I remember a few of these songs as Lowman Palace versions from 2017 and after that there’s been a bunch of gorgeous video performances too. Not to mention seeing most of my Portland/Seattle faves always praising Dean along the years. Great to have the album here and on my favorite label in the world too. I have to pick a vinyl too once they are available, because this easily fullfills those almost unfairly high expectations. Michael James Tapscott is a long time fave and the new album is again wonderful. Elephant Micah there too on one track, which is a nice bonus. There’s a whole lot more too. A few of these next ones are easily album of the week caliber too but this was a crowded week. There’s new albums from Michael Cormier-O’Leary, Greg Mendez, Jesse Remnant, Ruby Oland, Angelica Rockne, Eilen Jewell, Zach Aaron, Rodney Crowell, Thorsten Nesch (EP), SnarskiCircusLindyBand (EP), Amos the Kid, Durand Jones, The Golden Roses (cover EP), Dolour (EP) and Virgin of the Birds (EP).

A bit less crowded on the Finnish side of things. The almighty Sur-rur has a new compilation of unreleased stuff. Physical release was a few weeks back, but it’s now on these evil streaming platforms too. There’s also an album from Kissa and single gold from Inginmaa/Hypnomen, Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilanne, Jonna Tervomaa, Samae Koskinen, Sir Liselot, Lapsuus, Raivo Jackson and Slack Bird. Also revisiting last week Ne Galaktiset and Kalevi Suopursu albums at the end of the playlist.

The international song of the week is the new single from Corinne Sharlet. Oh my what a beauty of a song. Also love the new songs from Beth Bombara, Leah Senior, Anna St. Louis, Whitney Rose, Summer Dean, Turnpike Troubadours and Dogwood Tales. Again just to name a few. Too early to say which of these will become long time friends.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #231

A lot of new music this week. I failed miserably with the length of this thing. There’s way too much stuff, but listen as much as you want.

Album of the week is the new Withered Hand album. What a beauty. We also got albums from Tiny Ruins, Mike Frazier, Del Barber, Mya Byrne, Lisa/Liza, Alexander (EP), Photo Ops, Triptides, John Andrews & The Yawns, Tomten, Bernice, Country Westerns, Josh Ritter, Jerry Leger (EP), Mother Juniper, Dan Whitaker, Great Lake Swimmers, Ruby De Anda, Mariee Sioux (EP), Annie Blackman, Grant Swift and Dropkick. Oh yeah there’s The National too, which is probably pretty great but you don’t need this blog to find it.

Big Finnish week too led by a couple of album treasures from Helmi Levyt. These are albums from Kalevi Suopursu and Ne Galaktiset. A new Hulda Huima song is always a big deal. This time it’s even bigger, because it’s a debut release from a new feminist record label Minna Records. The label was founded by Minna-Kaisa Kallinen (aka Hulda Huima). Important and much needed, because music is still such a male-dominated industry. There’s more too and this week we also got albums from Folkjykä & Kuntoutujat, Kettu Kasetti and Lau Nau plus singles from Ty Roxy, Lyyti, Emppu and Juppe. There’s also 1980 AD EP from last week that I managed to miss back them. Oh and at the end there’s another cut from last week’s Liila Jokelin album. One of my favorite Finnish albums of the year so far.

The international singles are again a little buried, because there’s so many album releases and I try to focus on them first. For example there’s some excellent country gems at the very end of the playlist. Early favorites in general came from Dean Johnson, J.E. Sunde, Colter Wall, Michael James Tapscott, Matt Paxton & The Pintos, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, PJ Harvey, Margaux, Shane Pendergast and Brigid Mae Power. Again just to name a few.

OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #230

A whole lot to love once again. Made it an hour shorter this time around. Still way too long I suppose.

Bella White and Esther Rose can share the album of the week honors. Plenty of other great ones too. There’s new albums from Vilma Flood, Cinder Well, Joey Frendo, Rose City Band, Nydia Gonzalez (well this EP was early March release, but first time on this new music roundabout. Better late than never, because it’s awesome. Thanks to RSTB for this one), Superviolet, Domestic Bliss, Billy Tibbals (EP), Paint Fumes (from last week), Lily Dabbs, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Black Guy Fawkes (EP), Lucy Farrell, The Infamous Stringdusters (EP), Laura Mae Socks (EP), Trapper Schoepp and Smaller Hearts.

A short but really strong Finnish section led by the wonderful new Liila Jokelin album. Great new albums also from Ilja Karsikas and Captain Cougar. I highly recommend all of them. There’s also single beauties from Metsäheikki, Jere Ijäs & Monacon työväen palloilijat and STINAKO.

International song of the week is the new Lauren O’Connell song. Loved that Details album some years ago and great to finally hear a new original from them. Such a great song. Also would like to give a standing ovation to the new Evangeline Gentle song. Love it so much. Oh and a new amazing song from Anna Tivel too. It’s an outtake from the Outsiders sessions, but definitely not just a throwaway b-side. Easily could have been on the album too. Other early faves came from Kyle Cox, Mo Troper, RF Shannon, Joanna Sternberg, Michael Cormier-O’Leary, Durand Jones, Brennen Leigh, Logan Ledger, Withered Hand and so forth. Just to name a few. Too early to tell which will become long time friends and which just lovely new acquintances.

Both me and the artists that I feature on this. This made it past the 750 mark on Spotify a while back and that was nice. I’d love to hit 1000 before this has run its course. I know some real people who read, listen and appreciate this and that matters a whole lot more than any kind of faceless number on the follower count. Anyway, that’s all for now. OCTA New Music Weekly – Episode #229

Again a bit late due to yesterday’s awful headache and the sheer amount of great new music. Almost threw in the towel while trying to compile this. Way too much to cover. If I only learned to just do a twenty song list or something. Might be better for the listener too. But that’s just not me. I have a stubborn desire to listen as much as I possible can.

We have new albums from Josienne Clarke, Wax Mannequin, Little Misty, Lauren Barth, Fruit Bats, Lachlan Denton, Fenne Lily, Sweet Dreams Nadine, Feist, Nutana (this from last week), Dave Scanlon, Phil Hooley, Caleb Elliott, Mike Tod, Spencer Cullum, Ben de la Cour, Kerry Charles, Uh Huh, Mike Viola, The Moonlight Years and Grace Morrison.

From Finland there’s albums from Sepä juuri, Ghosts on TV and Tomi Puukko and an EP from The Southgates. Plus singles from Nina Kaitaranta, Jorilee, Babel, Lau Nau, Mr. Dad and Pelko.

Despite all those great albums, my favorite part of this week’s list are the singles. New songs from Kassi Valazza, Dean Johnson, Keven Louis Lareau, Luka Kuplowsky are all wonderful and I love them to bits. Then there’s also new greatness from Vanity Mirror, Michael James Tapscott, Laith, Abe Partridge, Ruby Oland, Reyes, Libby DeCamp, Jack Symes, Tim Easton, Rose City Band and so forth. Just to name a few. There’s gems throughout the long playlist.
