Robin Pahlman – Temporary Everything

image

Our man in New York, Robin Pahlman, has a new album out and available. Temporary Everything is the title and it came out today on Monkey Records as a digital download / limited edition cassette. I’m just spinning it for the first time and I’m liking it a lot. Robin has drifted towards modern times since the lovely folk-tinged EP and there’s definitely more sonic adventures and indie rock vibes on the new full-length album. The EP probably was closer to the core of my music taste, but it sounds like Robin Pahlman can pull this off just as well. This is the excellent lead single Feedback and Static from the new album.

Nada Surf – Rushing (video)

Time to take a step backwards and get to back to the basics of my music taste. Ok, Nada Surf might not be one of the most important bands in my life, but I’ve listened and loved them for fifteen years or so. Especially Let Go is a perfect album in my books and even just the whole idea of having Nada Surf around to comfort me makes a few clouds dissappear. It’s always love when they are around and I love them for it.

Nada Surf just released a new album You Know Who You Are and it’s another great addition to their catalogue of the finest kind of melodic pop music. My early favourite has been this song called Rushing. Perhaps partly because of this cute video. Watching it makes me love life and all the other cliches that might sound naiive, but are still true. I found out that Matthew Caws co-wrote this one with Dan Wilson so that might be another reason why I’m feeling strangely fine while listening to it. This is Rushing from the new Nada Surf album that is now out on Barsuk/City Slang.

Andy Shauf – The Party (20th of May)

image

Some fabulous release news arrived today and because I’m really excited about this, I have to make an early shout out about it. Canadian songwriter Andy Shauf recently signed with ANTI- (US/Europe) and Arts & Crafts (Canada) and these lovely labels will release his new album The Party on 20th of May. The first outtake The Magician from the forthcoming album is also now out and available and as expected it sounds spectacular. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing. Andy Shauf is a brilliant storyteller and songwriter. Beautifully akward characters going through the little adventures of their lives in forms of masterfully arranged folk songs. The Bearer of Bad News was a great record that I still listen to and I’m sure the new one is going to be even better. This is The Magician from the forthcoming album.

Caleb Caudle – Carolina Ghost

calebbi

North Carolinian songwriter Caleb Caudle released his marvellous new album Carolina Ghost on Feb 26 with the help of This Is American Music. My own expectations for the album were ridiculously and probably even unfairly high after glorious Paint Another Layer on My Heart, but Caleb Caudle still manages to fill them. Excellent singing, timeless country sounds, a sense of clarity and a warm-hearted human presence all-around. Caleb also has that unashamedly romantic pop sensibility in his songwriting and therefore there’s a lot to love here even for pop fans who might not usually be that much into country troubadours. I’m a pop guy at heart so I love that melodic side of Caleb a lot. I should go on and on about this, but perhaps it’s better you just listen to him sing. This is Tuscaloosa from Carolina Ghost that is out now on This Is American Music.
