Michael Feuerstack, The Harry Heart Chrysalis, Freschard

You might assume that I only like country & western, but it’s not completely true. Here are some other fairly recent favourites.

michaelfeuerstack

Michael Feuerstack’s previous album Tambourine Death Bed was a late entry to my best albums of 2013 list. Follow-up Singer-Songer came out on record release day. This time Michael isn’t charge of the lead vocals. Instead he has written songs for bunch of Canadian music heroes. There’s Jim Bryson, Devon Sproule, Leif Vollebekk, the almighty John K. Samson etc. This thing also works surprisingly well as a whole album. It doesn’t seem to be just a loose collection of songs with different lead vocalists. It’s not a big surprise that I will post the one that is sung by John K. Samson, because.. well…I love that man. This is Friday Night Guard. Singer-Songer is a co-release by Headless Owl and Forward Music Group.

This song came to my attention in January or February and I’ve really felt bad that I never wrote about it. I only included it on one of those Spotify lists. The song in question is You Are Not A Rarity by Sydney-based The Harry Heart Chrysalis. I’ve listened to it dozens of times during the past few months. It’s so brutal in a kind of a cute way. It’s the first single from his latest EP Bodensee and Other False Stories, which you can download for free at Bandcamp. He already posted another single from this EP, but I’m kind of slow so I’ll post this favourite of mine, You are Not a Rarity.

freschard

This is music that makes me smile. I can see myself getting completely obsessed with Freschard in the not-too-distant future. This is a beatiful drug. If you see me making little dance moves in public and singing out loud with french accent, I’m not going insane or trying to invent a new silly walk. It’s just a little overdose of Freschard. Here are a few magnificent examples.

The Delines, The Redlands Palomino Company & Skip Zone

Maybe I start writing this blog again. Well actually I begun yesterday with that Nat Johnson song/video and I’ll continue tonight with these beautiful songs. All of these are current favourites of mine and I think these fit rather nicely under the same post.

thedelines

Colfax Avenue by The Delines is probably my favourite album right now. Of course that changes fairly often, but damn this is good. Of course I pretty much knew that before even listening. The songwriter is Willy Vlautin after all and he can’t do much wrong in my books. Actually, if I think about it, I didn’t like the previous Richmond Fontaine album as much I had expected. But this is good, really good. Mr. Vlautin has written bunch of great songs and Amy Boone sings them perfectly. That Randy Newman cover Sandman’s Coming is kind of pointless if you ask me, but all the original The Delines material is gorgeous. This is I Won’t Slip Up.

The Redlands Palomino Company came to my attention back in 2007 when I bought their previous album Take Me Home. They took their time to make the follow-up, but it recently came out on Clubhouse Records. I’ve only listened to it two times so far, but I’m really enjoying it. So my kind of music. The Redlands Palomino is still one of UK’s finest americana bands. This is the first single In These Lines.

Moving on to Finland. One of Finland’s finest americana bands Skip Zone is working on their second full-length album. A few weeks ago they released the first single called The Road and the River from that forthcoming album. This great song is a perfect way to end this little blog post.

Video of the Day #148: Nat Johnson

natdog

The day job has been brutal and lately it has taken all the energy I’ve had. Several 10-12 hour work days during the past few weeks. But I did pay the domain bill for another year, so I hope you still check this out every now and then. Your laziest and lousiest blogger still writes occasionally. I hope things get a little easier now and I can actually think about doing something else than just somehow battling through each day. There’s so many things I’d love to share.

Nat Johnson’s new song and new music video Dog is definitely one of them. So let’s start with this adorable little song. The combination of the video and the song is just perfect. It makes me happy. Kind of like it makes me happy to see my cat greet me at the door after a long work shift. Dog is an outtake from Nat’s forthcoming album Neighbour of the Year. You can buy the single from Bandcamp.

Zachary Lucky Finland Tour 16.4 – 20.4

zacharyl

Canadian country/folk singer-songwriter Zachary Lucky will be heading over to Finland next month. Big thanks to Fredrik Johansson for making this happen. I’ve been following Zachary Lucky for a few years and I’m really looking forward to see him perform at Bar Kuka on the 17th of April. You can check out the full tour schedule below.

Zachary Lucky Finland Tour 16.4 – 20.4

4/16 – Helsinki (Tavastia)
4/17 – Turku (Bar Kuka)
4/18 – Loimaa (Bar Edgar)
4/19 – Turku (8raita instore)
4/19 – Parainen (PIUG)
4/20 – Vaasa (O’Malleys)

I first got into Zachary Lucky a few years ago through Slowcoustic, which was my primary source of music information at the time. I bought the beautiful folk ep/mini-album Saskatchewan back then and have been a fan ever since. Last year Zachary Lucky released his latest album The Ballad Of Losing You. He took a turn towards country music with the new album, but it wasn’t a wrong turn. The song material is excellent and I love the way the album sounds. Even my digital download sounds incredibly warm. I need to buy a vinyl copy after the concert. You can stream Zachary’s music over at Bandcamp, Spotify. 8raita.fi also has the CD in stock already and vinyl later. Here are a few examples.
