Guy Capecelatro III – Scatter the Remains

guycapecelatro

I can’t exactly remember how I found this album at Bandcamp a couple of weeks ago, but I’m extremely pleased that it happened. The music instantly won my heart over, I bought the download and this has been on heavy rotation ever since. I’m probably very late to this party, because it looks like Guy Capecelatro III has released a lot of music over the years. Based on Magnet mix-tape article I read, he has a lot of friends that I admire (like Sidney Lindner, Jill Andrews, Tim Showalter), so I probably should have stumbled upon this treasure of literate folk music of his way sooner. Thankfully I did found it now and I’ve been enjoying his new album Scatter the Remains a whole lot lately. Especially the songs Atoms, Scattershot and Stupid Moon are worth all the hearts. It’s certainly not the happiest album I’ve heard, but somehow those beautiful slow-paced melodies and that warm and kind atmosphere of the songs still makes me feel like I’m going to be just fine. I’ve been also listening to Guy’s older album North for the Winter and it’s equally wonderful. You can stream/buy the whole thing at Bandcamp. Here are some wonderful outtakes from Scatter the Remains that came out on Burst & Bloom Records in November, 2014. Music video for the song Unknowable + Stupid Moon and Atoms from the new album.

Darren Hanlon – When You Go (single/video)

darrensingle

It’s soon time to select the albums of the year 2014, but we already have a good candidate for 2015’s top 10 or top 1. Australia’s finest pop troubadour Darren Hanlon is finally about to release a new full-length albun Where Did You Come From? in March 2015. The first single from the forthcoming album is called When You Go and physical copies of this vinyl single can be pre-ordered from Flippin Yeah Industries. I’m a huge fan of Darren Hanlon and I’m extremely eager to hear the new album. He is a first class singer-songwriter and this first taste of the new album is once again wonderful. The music video for the new song was directed by Jeff Rowles. I also added some older Darren Hanlon classics below the new video, because he has written a lot of magnificent songs over the years and has also released some very cool music videos.

Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound, Devil Box – Night Terrors

arlo

The wonderful Ninebullets blog/radio introduced Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound to me several months ago. I’ve only featured them on one playlist I did back then, so it’s about to write a couple of words about this magnificent record. Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound are from Cincinnati, Ohio and they deliver some extremely convincing americana heartbreakers. These songs will slowly burn a hole in your heart, but somehow you still feel more whole after listening to it than before. Some of this reminds me a bit of Doc Dailey’s album Victims, Enemies, & Old Friends, which I really loved some years ago. This is Just Like the Rest from Arlo McKinley’s new album.

Moving on to Finland where Devil Box are ready to make some beautiful primitive guitar sounds and enter into the deep dark woods of experimental blues and folk music. Their new album Night Terrors came out in early November on Kääntö Records. You can stream/buy the whole thing on their Bandcamp. This is the opener Breathing Technique.

The Burning Hell / My Name Is Mathias

burn

I’ve had a huge hole in my pop music education. I haven’t really properly listened to The Burning Hell until now. That’s rather criminal especially if you consider the facts that a) I love Canadian music b) they played in my hometown Turku a year or two ago and I managed to miss them. Anyway, for the past two days I’ve been finally listening to The Burning Hell and their 2013 album People (Out on BB Island , Headless Owl Records) and I’ve been smiling like a mad man while doing that. They are probably rather fed up with all the Jonathan Richman comparisons, but he sure does come to mind several times. Travel Writers on the other hand is a bit Lambchop-ish. But enough with the namedropping. This is Mathias Kom’s show and this man is one hell of a songwriter. The Wallflowers has been my favourite song in the world during these past two days.

The reason why I finally remembered that I need to dive into the The Burning Hell back catalogue is actually this new Mathias Kom / The Burning Hell tribute album called My Name Is Mathias. I saw it on my Bandcamp feed a while back and have also come across with it several times during the last week, because some of my favourite Canadians (John K. Samson, Mike O’Neill, Michael Feuerstack etc) are covering Mathias on this album. The tribute is now out on Headless Owl Records. This is Michael Feuerstack’s wonderful version of Like An Anvil.
