Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom, Christian Lee Hutson, Dana Gavanski and A Girl Called Eddy

Ariel Sharratt & Mathias Kom from The Burning Hell fame are getting ready to release a new duo album Never Work. It’s coming out on BB*Island on the 3rd of April and it will explore the future of work and work songs. The wonderful lead single and title track is out and available and it has been a perfect soundtrack for this winter vacation week I’m currently having. Listen to single below and pre-order from the BB*Island page.

I’m not usually able to keep up with the music news cycle, but for once I’m going to post the news of today. Christian Lee Hutson just announced that his long-waited new album Beginners comes out 29th of May on ANTI- Records. The announcement came with a brand new song and music video for album cut Lose this Number. I can’t wait to hear this one, because I really loved Northsiders last year and I Just Can’t Fucking Do It Anymore before it.

Another record that I’m excited to hear is the forthcoming debut album Yesterday Is Gone from Canadian folk songwriter Dana Gavanski. I really liked all the songs she released in 2019 and in early 2020 arrived this latest single Good Instead of Bad. And well this is a total homerun and makes sure I’m gonna write her name on my release calendar with a highlight and a small run of exclamation points. Yesterday Is Gone will be released by Full Time Hobby on the 27th of March. Here’s the latest single along with a music video of another album song called Catch.

Let’s wrap this little blog post with a special one that is already out and available. I stopped waiting for the follow-up to the great A Girl Called Eddy debut a long time ago. That beautiful album came out in 2004 (I think I bought my copy a year or two later), but what a lovely surprise it was to get a brand new A Girl Called Eddy album Been Around in 2020. I’ve only touched the surface of the album so far and just gave it a first full and proper spin tonight. However, it’s already quite clear that Erin Moran still has it and she has created a beautiful classic soulful pop album. Here’s a couple of early favorites, the lyric video for the title track and another wonderful album cut Jody. Been Around is now out and available on the legendary Spanish pop label Elefant.

Samantha Crain, Anna Burch, Cayley Thomas and Joey O’Neil

I’m on a one-week long winter vacation, but there’s time at least for one quick music video post. So here’s a couple of great advance singles / music videos from forthcoming 2020 albums. Kicking things off in Oklahoma with a return single An Echo from long time favorite Samantha Crain. Her new album A Small Death is due out 1st of May on Real Kind Records (a new label founded by Lucy Rose). Here’s the poignant and beautiful first single accompanied with a music video directed by Joanna Grace Babb.

Moving on to slightly lighter tones with the fabulous new single from Detroit-based songwriter Anna Burch. Her new album If You’re Dreaming is coming out on the 3rd of April on Polyvinyl Records / Heavenly Records. I loved her debut album and the new single Not So Bad is another winner. I so look forward to hearing the full album. While waiting I can keep this single on repeat and also revisit my Softies catalog and other Rose-related parts of my record collection (because somehow listening to Anna Burch have that affect on me). Anna Burch seems to be quite a multi-talent too, because she also directed this gorgeous music video for the new single.

Next stop Toronto via Edmonton, Alberta. Blue Jean Baby is the latest single from the forthcoming Cayley Thomas album How Else Can I Tell You? Actually I’ll put the first single Midnight Hours here too, because it slipped under my radar due to the late 2019 release date. Boths songs are wonderful and I’m sure this is going to be a special record.

Wrapping this quick blog entry in the Yukon wilderness. I just found Joey O’Neil a couple of weeks ago when I searched the week’s new songs for the weekly playlist and on CDBaby website they recommend her music if I like Jennifer Castle and well who doesn’t. She did release an album in 2016, but somehow I managed to miss that one (a shame because it seems like a really good album based on a quick listen, I’ll need to give it a proper spin soon). She is now working on a new one with Aaron Goldstein and it should come out in April. Here’s the beautiful new single When I Forget with an 8mm music video.

And as a bonus here’s new live one I Can’t Keep Both from the Southern Souls vaults.

Dakota Theim, Mo Troper, Witch’s Wall and Untogethers

Over the years this blog has drifted towards roots-ier surroundings, but every now and then it’s good to go back to the actual roots of the blog and share a couple of fabulous pop songs. This little blog entry is heavily influenced by the new Dakota Theim album Somewhere Under the Sun, which came out on the 10th of January. I just found this Portland-based songwriter and his album last Friday thanks to American Standard Time. Read their long and detailed review here to get a better grip of why you should introduce your heart to these songs or just hit play below to hear a couple of melodic and catchy pop treasures. This is such a wonderful 60s / early 70s influenced pop album and I love every second of it.

Another should-be hit record from Portland is the forthcoming Mo Troper album Natural Beauty that is due out on Tender Loving Empire on the 14th of February. The previous one Exposure & Response was one of the best power pop albums I’ve heard in recent years, so I have high expectations for this one. I think I already shared Jas from Australia in the latter parts of 2019, so let’s drop the other two singles here.

Witch’s Wall are from Birmingham, Alabama and they have a self-titled debut album coming out on the 3rd of April on Cornelius Chapel Records. I don’t know a whole lot about them yet, but I do know that this first single Lady Love is rather superb and comes also in form of a beautiful nostalgic video. I look forward to hearing their blend of dreamy pop, experimental rock and psychedelic vibes when the album arrives.

Last stop on this pop tour tonight is Tampere, Finland and the great new single The Peasant from Untogethers. A full-length album will follow in March on Iso Pinkki, but first we can enjoy this gorgeous 60s influenced pop song along with archive footage of Finnish lumberjacks doing some log racing back in the late 40s.
